  1. kwsNI's farewell speech. on Acer Labs' (ALI) Plans Box To Play PS2 Games, DVD · · Score: 1

Sig11, TrollMastah, Patrick Bateman, OOG - you've all said good-bye and now it's my turn to go to that great place we
go to when we realize how fatally flawed /. really is and that Rob really doesn't give a damn.

Moderation / Metamoderation all failed so Rob started taking trolls into his own hands. Bitchslapping and
changes to the Slashcode have only brought about more abuses to the system. Additions like the time limit
between posts and the Lameness filter have hurt it's users while /. still ran rampant with penis birds and vulgar,
racist remarks that outnumbered the useful posts.

So now, I know noone cares, but I'm going too. I follow in the paths of some truly great people that truly cared about
the Free Software community. But now, that "community" has evolved into an entity called Andover.net
and anyone that still has the notions of being a part of a community is silenced.

Good bye all. I really can't say I'll be missing you.

Sorry, this should be from the humor category. Microsoft's Linux Myths page has very little in the way of valid content. True, there are areas that Linux still needs work and there are areas that Windows beats Linux, but they certainly aren't the ones MS choses.

My favorite part was where MS says that it's based off a 30 year old OS (yeah, and there's a reason that it's made it 30 years and is still around) and that it wasn't designed for a GUI. I wow more friends by just letting them see the GUI's I'm running. Face it, the desktop themes for KDE, Gnome, GTK (and others - don't flame me if I didn't list your favorite) blow MS Plus out of the water. And let's not even get into how the functionality of some of the Window Managers works.

Personally, I think this is a good thing. I'm far from a big fan of AOL or Time-Warner, but I'm an even smaller fan of the government trying to regulate everything.

Since when is it the government's responsibility to police companies that might, in the future, break the law? The government thinks that because AOL/Time-Warner could become such a large company that they might do what MS did, they should regulate MS now.

Look at what the government accomplished with the MS trial. MS is still the same company it is today. It's still purchasing smaller competitors as fast as it can. The DOJ/MS lawsuit brought down every tech stock on the market except for MSFT.

I think you mis-understand me. My point is that too many people are fooled into thinking that we can create the perfect, secure environment. As it stands right now, we are usually one step behind the hackers and crackers. How often do you see MS or Sun or Redhat or any other manufacturer come out on their own and say, here's an security patch to a problem we just found? It doesn't happen.

Quite opposite of what you thought I meant, I think that the first step to improving digital security is to become more proactive than reactive to security.

The point my above post was trying to convey is that we're currently content to say I've secured my system against all know attacks. So what? Sometime down the road their will be a new hack out there and your system is going to be vulnerable. Too often, I've seen people like this. Security is an ongoing process that will never be complete.

I never said we shouldn't try to make better security. I just meant to imply that we will always find a way around security. Take DeCSS for example. The MPAA convinced all the movie studies that CSS was uncrackable, that's why they adapted it as the standard for DVD. Now look at it. The MPAA is spending billions in a losing battle to prevent people from decrypting it.

Never get sucked into believing that security makes your system secure. There will always be talented people out there putting in the effort to prove you wrong.

There will never be complete security in a networked world. The very nature of networking is to allow people access to information and as soon as you give them that, there will always be some way for someone with enough determination to get more than they're supposed to.

The only sure-fire way to make a system secure is to remove every input (KBD, Mouse, Serial, Network, Parallel, USB, etc.) port from a system.

What principals did this guy further by sacrifising his job? The only thing he did was release a few photo's of a product that was to be released in less than 24 hours. What good did he do for the sake any principal or what cause did he sustain? He knowingly broke his companies rules and now you want to make him a martyr?

Personally, I think it's drastic to sue him. However, that's Apples call to make. The fact is, this guy released confidential information that he had signed and agreed not to release. When he did that, he did so after signing a NDA saying that Apple could sue him, fire him, etc. He did it anyways.

If this guy is a sacrificial lamb, it's because he volunteered for it when he leaked the photos that he knew he shouldn't leak.

Come on everyone. Most of the Slashdot readers aren't stupid. Let's nominate this guy for a Darwin Award, not Martyrdom.
