If you ask me, timeday.org looks more like a marketing vehicle for a $15 paperback than an organization concerned about me spending too much time behind a desk... Pitiful...
I don't care what who expects me to spend 60 hrs at work. _I_ manage my time and _I_ decide my priorities. I always put in my 40 hours...and I don't miss deadlines. So, I may not get an "effort-based" (time-based) bonus...but I have happy bosses and I don't miss a minute more than I have to with my family. You can be flexible and help out when things come up without spending more time away from home. You just have to work effectively and manage expectations...
It is amazing how difficult it is to form an intelligent response to this article.
I can understand slashdot's collective interest in all things Segway, but I think at this point there's probably nothing more that can be said about the subject.
I see this as a parallel to a prophetic article in which the Hurd is used to power the next Furby, thus sounding the death knell for both technologies.
Furby = nearly dead retired clown, and Segway = The Hurd, in case you didn't get my analogy.
It's an interesting technology looking for a market that doesn't exist. People in densely packed cities are doing just fine with inexpensive bikes. Americans like their cars. The Segway is the butt of a lot of unfunny jokes, and publicity stunts like this.
any of you java cats had a run in with the "Bad magic number"? try editing the first character in a.class file...this is a way to force it to happen...but if you've ever used JRun, you've almore certainly had the evil first encounter...
Is it just me of doesn't it seem that Carnivore's "potential for abuse" is the whole reason we need to get rid of it? I mean, who cares if it has the best authentication ever...I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist here...but, legitimate FBI agents (completely authorized to use Carnivore) could be the ones we should worry about. We all know that sometimes law enforcement officials will do whatever is necessary to put behind bars someone that they believe to be guilty. That is what we need to protect ourselves from...not outside hackers breaking in to Carnivore. We can't be sure that the "evidence" collected by this thing isn't completely forged. It sits AT the ISP they could easily make it look like someone did/said something that they never had anything to do with. Has the world gone nuts?
Okay...I'm not sure where that came from...but whoever posted it needs smacked. You obviously think that the world revolves and relocates in your arse... The comment to which you replied said nothing about Americans deserving better products. It made no attempt to insinuate that Americans are better than the rest of the world. All the guy said (and quite legitimately I might add) was that this bug would most likely be worked out before it launches in the states. This is a perfectly valid statement. Considering that this is a fairly major issue, it only makes sense that Sony would try to resolve it before releasing the machine anywhere else...US or otherwise. The original poster was simply expressing his gratitude that this was found and will, probably, be fixed before he spent his hard earned money on it... Grow up.
No matter how much we geeks don't want to admit it, there is a place for Windows in the world. It is easy for those of us who have some talent in the field of computers to scream, "Whooo Hooo! Use Linux...Down w/Micro$oft...". However, I think that we often fail to realize how computer illiterate the average Joe really is.
Windows is often a more realistic choice in the corporate (or in this case governmental) community for the shear fact that it is easy to use and EVERYBODY knows something about it. It is (like it or not) a fairly intuitive OS.
Now, don't get me wrong...I dispise Micro$oft as much as the next guy. I am simply willing to admit that Windows is useful for some tasks. The Chinese government would be making a mistake by taking this sort of action. It will result in (at the least) a significant period of decreased productivity...

PowerBuilder Unix, Windows, Macintosh...use as a front end...or the whole damn application.
