[........] the relative distances you appear to be from points A, B, and C. Given that larger distances cause larger average delays, I can triangulate your location.
Bullshit! If i was multi-homed, maybe you could, but you can't if i'm not. You could maybe triangulate my ISP's router, but that could be hundreds of kilometres away from where i am.
That's a reasonable attitude, the only music download service that's available in Australia, apart from evil Apple's iTunes store, is operated by Telstra (the Australian equivalent of BT) and it's surprisingly good. They haven't got as good a selection of music as i'd like, but you don't have to wrestle with bullshit software to buy from them - you can do the whole thing with a web browser (which is how it should be) so it works fine with Linux.
The amount of compensation awarded in a civil matter are generally decided according to how much damage was done to the person making the complaint. If he'd been accused of sleeping with a 14 year old, the amount of compensation would probably have been higher.
I remember it. But i'm not sure you do! It was British Standard Time - 1 hour ahead of GMT all year round - which brought the UK in line with nearby European mainland countries.
Ah, the UK, where reinventing the wheel is a daily occurrence!
However, given the British obsession with world war two, this may be an appropriate move - it will be like returning to 1940-1945, when they had "double summer time", mainly so people could work in their gardens, growing vegetables, after they got home from work. Somehow, i don't think this is what they'll be using the extra hour of evening daylight for this time round though - it will be simply an excuse to get more drunk in the evening (if that's possible).
How do you know they've stayed away? We probably haven't had radio for long enough for them to get here yet. They could be on their way right now - and very hungry after 50 years on the road!
Facebook's different. It's somehow managed to reach a critical mass where everyone you ever knew is on it - which is sort of making it more and more solid. If you ditch Facebook, you lose touch with a whole lot of people - who you maybe couldn't really bother to get their email addresses and email them, but want to keep in touch with in a low key sort of way.
I've never really been able to see the point of Twitter though.
It's not "hard" science, it's psychology. And it's not in a paper in a scientific journal, it's an article in Weird - and hopelessly scrambled by the journalist as usual.
But i did read the whole article.
Of course there's a you - it's your physical body and the chemical processes that occur in it. It's not at all hard to delineate. Consciousness is just the result a whole load of chemical reactions that take place in your body.
You may think you decided to read this story -- but in fact, your brain made the decision long before you knew about it.
That's total nonsense and i can't see any point in reading any further. What are they implying? Your brain isn't you? Only your conscious thoughts are you?
I assume god's let you into a little secret that nobody else knows! I don't think anyone could say anything much with any certainty about 99.9999999% of the planets in the universe.
However those 44,000 holders of older (and now disabled) MD5 hashed accounts should rush changing their passwords elsewhere, if they have the bad habit of using the same password everywhere...
If they can remember what password they used and where else they might have used it... I got the email, but i'm buggered if i know what password i used for that account. Chances are it was a disposable one that i use for accounts i don't care about, but i couldn't say for sure.
If you believe that your abilities are the work of God then whom do you believe is responsible for Alzheimer's?
The devil, of course! Not long after people invented god, some smartarse like you asked the same question, so they had to invent the devil to explain it.

oops! should have been a "but" in there between "attitude" and "the only". fucking wine!

Sharepoint's a hideous nightmare monolithic monstrosity. Typical Mircrosoft.

Bugger! Now i only have time to make a coffee while a slashdot page loads - i used to be able to make dinner!
Don't worry, we're probably going to run out of phosphorous before we run out of molybdenum - and plants are quite partial to that, too.
Either no spacefaring race has evolved, anywhere, ever, or they evolved and died out - across the whole galaxy.
Or we live in the arse end of the galaxy and nobody can be bothered wasting their time coming here!
They may not be more aggressive, but if they can get here they're definitely smarter. So if they're as aggressive as us, we're dead!
How do you know they've stayed away? We probably haven't had radio for long enough for them to get here yet. They could be on their way right now - and very hungry after 50 years on the road!
I believe that law was repealed in 1997.
Most western countries had laws against gay sex 50 years ago, often with long prison sentences.
And the US had laws against it until 8 years ago!
USA: the perfect democratic state - one where half the population is in jail.

It started to go downhill drastically at about the time Murdoch bought it.
that sounds like murdoch's style!
If you're trying to do <this>, you do it like this: <this>. And it's usually a good idea to review before posting.
Did you review that?
I think you meant <this> didn't you?

Obviously that's in a celsius not that other unit of measure that died a few decades ago.
If it's -40 it doesn't matter whether it's fahrenheit or celsius.
