  1. University Monopoles(sic) on Clemson University Bans Free Long Distance Sites · · Score: 1

Here at my uni they do everything possible to shaft the undergrads and to a lesser extent the post grads. Second hand book store books at 1/2 price: Shut down so waterstones could move in and never have the right books Union shops stuf downs Sandwiches at 30% more than shops off campus. And more on topic: The halls of residence have no capacity to dial out you have the use a 3rd party which surcharged on the cheaper 0800 (free in uk) companies... This has since been sold (i wont say Ericsson) and they are also running the network here. Ill love it when they ban icq and sites they dont want. The idea of putting ericsson ISp cds in every room was luckily veto'd by a person with common sence. ick ack yuk not the view of my uni

A point well made.... Win2k is very stable and quite good (no flame intended), now if i were an admin in charge of a large server system i would rather run it on a commerciall supported *nix than somthing coded (no offence) by the general public. Linux is wonderful but commerce breads commerce. Beos is a multimedia system and will find its own snug corner in the market - but i think linux will co-exist nicely with win2k on the desktop/office workstation....

When will this all end i wonder. The Big fat music and Video companies are stamoing down on small individuals who have donw nothing more than try and help people play "Their" movies on linux systems. Does this seem a little unfair? Where does it all end? DeCSS reverse engineering hardly sounds like world wide forgery to me. Does the fact i have a cdrw mean i a duplicating cds and l33t warez for all my friends, no it doesn't i use mine for acchives of my scans and brother bans music. Welcome to a bastardised 1984 where it is not the goverment in control but the media and their fat rich lawers. I did like the few hackers who treid to submit T-Shirts today to a judge with the DeCSS code on it. -my opinion is my own not yours

Netscape 4.x needs replacing urgently if it is to catch up with IE. At my place of work most people have switch back to the evil exploder now as it is far more stable than netscrape.

  5. Right now i have my 1st post on High Speed Net Access Defining College Life · · Score: 1

At my university (Imperial College) I am currently in the only halls or residence with network access although more are being done this academic year (by erricson). We use it all the time to email/icq each other when phones would be inappropriate (after midnight) and some use netmeeting to converse with foreign relatives. Students are the future. Give them access to technology today.

When the mosue pad stopped working and i phoned technical support they were fine about it and said to just leave a post it note with a password on it so they could test it upon replacement.. The only thing that doesn't work is the soundcard allthough others with the same laptop on the net have patches for redhat....

Seriously though, there is a useful nature to this. It can be expensive to train up technical staff to the level or /real/ hackers. And the script kiddies could be useful for taking down / DOS'ing enemy sites for propoganda purposes. The more people you have working for you the more likely there is that someone will know how to do xyz or break such and suches codes. As long as we dont see Chinas web page defaced with the slogan "w3r3 m0r3 l337 7h4n y0u - luv un(13 s@m" -that is all
