  2. Always make interviewees answer why on Interviewing Experienced IT People? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Regardless of the age of my interviewee, I ask "why" a lot. I have the person describe what they did in this or that position or job and what decisions they made or contributed to. When they finish telling me about some decision, I always follow up with "why". Their answer will generally tell me whether or not the person is lying or exaggerating their role, but it also tells me a lot about their reasoning process. I'm not much concerned about whether or not I agree with their decision as much as how they arrived at it. As for old geezer (like me) oriented questions, you could ask about what they know from 20 years ago that still applies today. Make them be specific though. I'd also ask them to talk about how they learn and how they help their colleagues learn and grow. When I interview the "young 'uns" I ask questions about the aspects of development that aren't as much fun or as glamorous to see if they are serious. I put them into decision making mode and when they give me an answer, I ask them why. From my perspective, oneâ(TM)s abilities to reason, learn and share knowledge trump expertise in some technology. Technology changes all the time.

I believe that the DoD's network for secure (TS, S) information - Sipernet - actually does run on the Internet infrastructure. It doesn't behave the same way as normal traffic and special devices are used at the end points that connect to the Internet to disguise the traffic.

  4. Is this news? on Ubuntu 8.10 Outperforms Windows Vista · · Score: 4, Insightful

I've always assumed that Linux outperformed contemporary Windows equivalents on the desktop which is why I run Linux on old machines that are too slow for Windows but plenty fast enough for Linux. Linux speed and faster boots have never been enough to win the desktop. For that you need to be adequate in the categories users directly experience and you need mindshare which requires good marketing and distribution. Mac has great marketing and Microsoft has great distribution.

I wouldn't say this post is a troll, but it's definitely not insightful. It's just some opinions without any supporting arguments. Fine, but "insightful" should be reserved for posts that tell you something that can deepen or change your understanding of a subject or demonstrate that the poster has something out of the ordinary to share. This is just an opinion! So if I write that "Zune is good" do I get mod-ed as "insightful" or "insane"? I think that on /. "insightful" too often means "it agrees with my opinion".

I'm a fan of Stephen Fry and I certainly appreciate the work of FSF. However, since Stephen thinks its so great to give one's work away for free instead of receiving royalties, does he also give away copies of his own writings and performances for free or the cost of materials? Or, does he expect to be paid royalties? Just asking.

  11. Re:standards are falling on ISO Rejects OOXML Protest Appeals · · Score: 1

Very true. Corporations, including many who loudly tout "open standards" are only in favor of "open standards" and "fair processes" when the alternative is something that gives someone else an advantage. Their mission is to maximize profits and return to shareholders and management, not to do good in the world. Politicians who survive and rise are concerned more about winning the next election than they are about doing good things. The best of them try to do both, but when push comes to shove, they do what it takes to get (re-)elected or they disappear.
