H.264 is a newer video codec. The standard first came out in 2003, but continues to evolve. An automatically generated patent expiration list is available at H.264 Patent List based on the MPEG-LA patent list. The last expiration is US 7826532 on 29 nov 2027 ( note that 7835443 is divisional, but the automated program missed that). US 7826532 was first filed in 05 sep 2003 and has an impressive 1546 day extension. It will be a while before H.264 is patent free.
Instead of just turning on IPv6 for a day, the whole collective (300 of them) should "shut off" IPv4 with a warning page that says you need IPv6. That will get the ISPs' attention. Lets face it, my mother doesn't know or care about IPv6 or I pee V6 [engines].
Sure, a lot of people use Linux on the desktop but (not counting phones) its server market share is (much) better. Frankly, if these patches are super-duper-mega-ultra-awesome, like you hint at, distro maintainers would be including them. I don't count phones because they're so far away from what you and I call "Linux" that it doesn't really count. I'm sure there are layers of proprietary garbage that would make latency worse with or without these patches.
Most Linux users use a kernel supplied by their Linux distribution. Some distributions ship the "vanilla" and/or "stable" kernels. However, several Linux distribution vendors (such as Red Hat and Debian) maintain another set of Linux kernel branches which are integrated into their products."
"blocking hot linking of images" is primarily done to save bandwidth and to force people to view your page for whatever reason (most likely ad money). I would presume that the same Hulu ads would be streamed to you if you used Google TV so why care? It's the same bandwidth whether or not I use the website or Google TV. It's not like Hulu shows external ads on the pages its self.
From TFA: "Ironically, NBC -- one of the networks blocking Google TV -- offers a CNBC Google TV application for fans of its news channel."
This seems to clearly be a case of one hand not knowing the other hand is doing.
From T[o]FA: "Google TV isn’t totally a lost cause... because of the generosity of Comcast... streams just about everything to Google TV: ABC, NBC, Fox, all but CBS... The ironic part is that the content seems to be provided by Hulu itself"
Wait... How many fucking hands do I have?
Sometimes I really wonder is these media companies are just run by pre-pubescent boys. Does someone have the invitee list to the CEOs' birthday parties?
"Avatar" had a two bit, recycled plot (big bad corporations is willing to kill off indigenous people for profit)
People keep telling me what movies I have to see. Thanks to you, I no longer need to see "Avatar" because I can just go corporation bashing whenever the topic comes up. Next on my list: The Matrix (original). Never seen it. Don't really wanna see it. But I "have" to see it. Can someone summarize that as eloquently as the Avatar summary above?
You do realize that ARM is RISC and doesn't need/use microcode. "To keep the design clean, simple and fast, the original ARM implementation was hardwired without microcode" (Wikipedia) and to my knowledge it still is. It would up the power requirements considerably because you would have to have additional translation logic. It would defeat the purpose of ARM.

Being too young to know the 1950~1980 Motorola, to me the name "Motorola" is synonymous with Freescale and On-Semi. I just can't see them as a tech company, just a sore looser following in 's wake.
People stopped calling me for computer help when my response was "who should I bill for this?". Or when they left something on my desk and I threw it away.

Finally, they build one of the massive "what-if" projects.
Lets make collecting rain illegal. Since rain is free, it's anti-competitive. That way, us water utility companies can make more money.
Thanks for the link. As a private pilot, I use DUATS and ADDS frequently. They have my $0.02

Didn't you know? They've had a opt-out for years now, although there is no link to it, you just kind of have to know how to do it

+1 agree
Maybe slashdot should have a poll about it instead of how much you hate Sony; we already know that information.

Sweet. PHP finally has the qualifications to enter the X86 CPU market.

Does this now mean we can get more points on BOINC for finding ET?

Mach Microkernel + BSD userland + Proprietary GUI != Linux
Mach Microkernel + BSD userland + Proprietary GUI != Unix either (if SCO has anything to say about it)
