What I really want is to get my hands on that ICQ module that let you do file transfers through an IP Masq. It existed for 2.2 but i can't even find a copy of the source for that anymore, the webpage seems to have disappeared. With all the changes to the ip masquerading code the old module doesn't work for 2.4.

I know it may not seem like a big deal but every student house around me complains that their ICQ file transfers don't work, no matter if they are using a router, windows internet connection sharing or linux.

You can do it by forwarding ports and configuring the ICQ clients but the module would have been nice because then I wouldn't be responsible for all my housemates icq installs too.

personally i have perl scripts that extract ID3 information and store stuff like the CD# i burned it on or directory it is currently in, bitrate, size, filename, all ID3 info in a text file and that can be searched easily. that way it is easy to find songs by searchnig and i don't have to rename them all the time.

    An aside:
It would be nice if some[one|thing] would cache all pages linked to from slashdot so that when they go down we can at least see what was there to discuss it. Google cache works sometimes...

Its a headless ipmasq, so as long as it works i dont care... Anyway i unplugged it from the net when i found out. the next time was bind again, but the guy rebooted the box for some reason and then i found him on irc (was using the same nick as the account that he added, and IPs matched), and i asked him how he did it and he said bind.

That kind of thing can't really happen with windows, yeah you can get back orifice but norton antivirus takes care of that. For someone moving from windows to linux (say like my dad) if he hears that he has to check some web page and subscribe to mailing lists to keep on top of latest exploits that will root his box, it's a good reason to stay with windows.

It is supposed to be 2.2 mbit downstream, 1.1 up but I have found my max speeds to be about 140k/s both ways, with the record at 180 down. I get 1 static IP and they have no options for more

I pay 65$ CDN a month, which is 43.36$ US. If it has ever gone down, I haven't noticed. Fortunately for me they don't offer this service anymore so people can't suck up my bandwidth quite as easily. Now they sell the nortel 1 meg modem service with PPPOE which i think is 900/128kb/s i think.
