  1. Is it worth it? on Canadians Plan Robot Sub Missions To Aid Claim For Arctic · · Score: 3, Interesting

I wonder, with the economic crisis and the cost of fuel going down, will the race to claim and exploit Arctic fuel go ahead. The fuel there is ridiculously expensive to get to, so without oil being $100+ per barrel, will any of these countries really bother?

  2. Boolean Logic on Researchers Build Logic Gates With RNA · · Score: 2

Why are they working on more complex systems? If they already have AND and OR, all they need is a NOT and they can make any other type of gate

Yea, Communism is great but very hard to implement. You know, like Lisp is beautiful but generally useless for your everyday needs, so we go and use crappy Java

It's Stalin that messed it up, not Lenin. Get your facts straight.

That's one of the principles Enron made their money on - claiming future revenue before it existed. The truth is, announcing offshore drilling will reduce prices for quite a while, but when the market realizes this and corrects itself, it will crash horribly and send prices skyrocketing again

You should know better than to admit using Microsoft on Slashdot, so you got modded flaimbait. Fair? no

  7. Nothing New on Scientists Fear Impact of Asian Pollutants On US · · Score: 2, Insightful

Stuff like this has always been happening... Pollution from one country going into another. Just think of a large river, like the Danube, which goes through 5 or 6 countries, each of which used to dump a lot of trash in it. There's nothing that the downstream countries could do about it.

The US is guilty of stuff like this as well. The Colorado river had a huge delta in northern Mexico. After the dam was built, the area where the Delta was is now a desert. What could the Mexicans do about it? Nothing.

  8. Re:A whole new round of testing on Possible Monogamy Gene Found In People · · Score: 2, Interesting

Studies show that monogamous, long-married men live on average something like 5 years longer than single men. We used to attribute this to the fact that you have someone caring for you and someone to grow old with, providing more emotional stability.

However, I wonder if this gene actually has something to do with it, i.e. Could people with the monogamous gene live longer simply because they have the gene?

  9. Re:Where's the fire? on China Sets Sights On Rail Record · · Score: 0, Troll

Wow. Why aren't we in the US trying to do this? We used to be so worried about the Communists beating us. But now it's like we don't even care. Where's the fire?

We used to be worried about REAL Communists beating us. China is a Capitalist country, so we don't really care anymore. Also, fast trains run on electricity instead of gas, and that's not how we do things here in America.

I think you have India and China confused there. India's economy is nearing recession while China is still growing as fast as ever. In 20 years it will be Chinese wages which are as high or higher than Western ones

It's worth noting to say that the Holmes vs It's worth noting the Schenck ruling is no longer applicable. The only unlawful use of free speech these days is if your words present a call to "Imminent lawless action", i.e. if your words are likely to cause breaking of the law before law enforcement can intervene, such as calling for a riot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imminent_lawless_action

Of course, then there's libel, revealing secret information, NDAs, racism, threats... While some of these make sense, others just errode free speech. Remember that the last time Congress tried to introduce a Flag Burning Amendment it failed by only one vote! While I don't burn the flag, I do believe that anyone should have the right to do so.
