    I was reading one of the patents involved earlier today and it claims to patent the installation of a computer for navigation, and word-processing (of all things) in a car. So if I get my laptop and stick it on the dash board have I violated there patent? Seems a bit dumb.. However....I know nothing about the law so....

    In optoelectronics most semiconductors are toxic or have toxic elements. e.g. GaAs (Gallium Arsenide) is used a wide range of laser diodes and photoelectrons. Come to think of it I can not thing of a single laser which does not have arsenic in it.

    I don't understand why would anybody want this? Why would a manufacturer put enough power and ram in to a device to enable it to run two operating systems at the same time? Surely this just bumps up device cost and is madness? I may be wrong though?

    I am feeling very left out, I can't seem to find Conficker B++ or even Conficker B in my yum repository. sigh... It is such a shame that linux is always behind the curve as far as new and exciting features are concerned.

    Having read the FAQ, I found out that not only is this a US centric web site, but more interestingly..... There is a Japanese version of slashdot, slashdot.jp. How cool is that - I think shashdot looks funkier in Japanese! Am I the only one who did not know this?

    These are my taxes these guys are spending on this pointless project. I have to ask why this money is not being spent on serious research projects. There are a whole host of serious research problems out there that need cash which are not getting it. Some young researcher in the UK who has spent a lot of time putting together a serious grant on a serious topic will not get funded because of cash going to these guys. Disclaimer: But that is only my opinion.

    Year you are totally right. What worries me more is that when I hear them speak about things I know about, i.e. (computers, internet, and to some extent heath care) they seem to be getting the policy decisions just plain wrong. So, I wonder when I hear them speak about things I don't know about e.g. the banking system are they making the same brain dead decisions, in those sectors........ I expect so.

    I don't understand why we need another government department is the country not in enough debt already. Also why the sudden need for government involvement in the broad band industry - has is not worked perfectly well up to now with out the government? I think we have forgotten Reagan words of wisdom "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help you." This is just madness, it is time to vote Gordo and his mad chums out. Oh and don't even get me started on ID cards.

    Window (i.e. Bit locker) uses 128bit AES-CBC encryption with an initiation vector calculated from the position of the block on the disk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker_Drive_Encryption . There was some speculation on wikipedia that 128bit AES is not strong and that is why it is not used buy the US to encode the most sensitive information. Preferring instead to use the 256bit key for the most sensitive information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard The article mention that "Cryptographers worry about the security of AES". I wonder if they are correct......

    year "leaked". Who's job is worth leaking a driver for a dumb microsoft player. Do we know how this ended up on the net? It strikes me as a bit odd? Also has anybody else noticed that the source code seems to be nicely written (bar the bug)..... somewhat surprising for microsoft I allways assumed there code was written by a bunch of children.

    I wonder if build 7000 has all that wired DRM stuff from the vista kernel enabled. You know, the stuff which keeps your music and video encrypted all the way to the sound card/screen. If it were disabled on this beta then that would be a massive over head removed.

    fair enough but for a _normal_ house there is a considerable saving.

    A CFLs use 80% less energy than an incandescent bulb whilst produce the same amount of light. Incandescent bulbs are horribly inefficient and produce a huge amount of heat per Watt of light output. I recently calculated that a single 100W light bulb in our house (which is on most of the day), cost us 30Euros to run a year. Just that one light bulb. By replacing it with a (brighter) CFL we saved 24Euro per year! If you are not worried about the environment you should be worried about you wallet. This blatantly factual incorrect article should not be allowed on the front page of slashdot.
