  11. They work well, i've been using one on RollerMouse Aims to Replace the Traditional Mouse · · Score: 2, Insightful

I bought a Contour RollerMouse in mid-2004 and have been using it as my only pointing device at work since then. It works well. I use it combined with my old GoldTouch split keyboard sitting on an adjustable keyboard tray. I no longer have to reach for the mouse or trackball and my hands have been much happier.

    Flaws?

I use a dual head display, going from one end to the other usually involves using the end-bumping buttons to shift the mouse pointer over a bit. I got over this annoyance quickly.

I wish they made a narrow version with the buttons and such centered. I use a split keyboard without the useless numeric keypad so that part sticks out to my right as I have it setup with the split centered around the roller.

The reviewers comment that "it better be good at that price" seems a bit misplaced. You buy these because you are trying to save your career future and avoid RSI issues. Not because you want to be the envy of your peers and killer of first person shooter twitchers. That said, I hate the high price. Pure profit for them.

  20. Re:unix isn't your daddys unix anymore on Boot Process Visualization · · Score: 0

that was then. this is now.

boot time matters. serialized startup scripts, things that sleep needlessly. poor disk layout of all the random data that needs to be loaded at boot time (caching it all in a linear segment that is preloaded into the buffer cache as soon as booting starts is the way to go). they all contribute to boot startup time.

microsoft has requirements of less than one minute, probably closer to half that, from power on to desktop usability for their logo sporting preinstalled hw vendors. while they weild this as a big stick to prevent other software from running, theres no reason linux and bsd couldn't strive to match the nice low startup latency.

it really makes computing a nicer experience.

that said the 3ware controllers are the -best- multiport ide controllers out there, especially for SATA support under linux.

We use them and run linux sw raid5 across all the individual disks on the controller. Excellent performance (it max's out the 32bit PCI bus, easily 100mbyte/sec reads)
