Game makers who want their games to play on anything and everything out there. I think it's obvious that nintendo, microsoft, sony, and the computer are completely different machines. While they do have simularities between them, it should stand to reason that they are still DIFFERENT.
Halo and Halo 2 were games designed only for X-Box (and later they made a PC varient) that sold wonderfully. Haven't we finally come to a point that it can be proven that a title can be successful if only written for one platform?
Halo and Pikmin are two games that I absolutely love to play, but are only available on one system (XBox and Gamecube respectfully). This idea that you have to have a game play on every platform is the pitfall that we've experienced in special part thanks to EA.
Even today most games are designed to play on the xbox or playstation 2. Nintendo has been making millions of dollars since day one making and endorsing games that are only available on their systems, when are the other consoles going to start to do the same?
If you write a game for portability and not to take advantage of the pros of a system then you'll have the same mundane game across all platforms.
... okay no I'm not... no one can really be subjective, but they can lie and say they're being subjective before they aren't... anyways
Can you run a server in which the only money you put into it is the cost of the hardware and the electricity to run it? No.
Wait, what about Open Source or Free Software or those of us who don't think there's a difference between the two? What about it, it's free!
Yes, it is free, but there still needs to be someone to maintain the server. There is nothing autonomous about any server I've ever seen in my entire life in the entire world. Someone has to maintain the server, plain and simple. Are there people out there who are well versed in Unix/Linux that can maintain a server with absolutely no software costs? Yes. Do they work for free? Not usually.
When taking into consideration TCO for the company just big enough to want to do their server stuffs in-house, but not big enough to hire a full fledged IT department... Microsoft wins. Hands down it wins. Why? Because people know it, there are a thousand MCSE's with books and phone support contracts out there who can be replaced within 4 hours by calling one of a hundred temp services.
Can you do that with linux? No you can not. Why? Because MCSE's are a dime a dozen, there is nothing really special about an MCSE anymore, hell a teenager could get one. It's a certification, but it's also a "pass" that you are capable of usually making sure that a server and the network its attached to "work" and if you don't, you can be replaced.
You want to know what is complete malarky all around as far as TCO? The fact that most businesses don't want to deal with operation, they consult it out. Just like companies don't like to clean their toliets, they don't like to maintain their servers either.
You know why? Because they know that they can for a fixed fee have a server and someone to bitch at whenever they please. And these consulting companies aren't making money from selling software licenses, they're making money from retainers and service contracts. The service contracts that when averaged out equal the cost of about one or two full time employees, but when you consult you get a whole TEAM.
So the server software doesn't matter, in fact in most instances its moot.
Okay, I'm not trying to burst everyone's bubble here, but there is no kung-fu hacking style. I guess the best metaphor I can come up with here is hacking is like martial arts. Anyone can turn on a computer and run a program, just like anyone can punch things.
There is no skill involved in hitting things, just as there is no skill involved in running a "script". However even with a script and a punch you can still bring harm.
With training you can learn how and where to hit someone to inflict pain, debilitate them, or kill them. Just like anyone with an iota of programming knowledge can shutdown a server, destroy the data on it, or bring down entire networks.
Like martial arts, thankfully those that do know how to kill someone with their hands and those that do know how to do malicious things with a computer, do not do them. Anyone can write a virus, and knowing programming I know that you could make a very nasty virus to do very nasty things.
But that doesn't happen. Usually what happens is those who might know the tools of the trade or a few moves don't have the discipline. They lack the ability to know that "you can" is different than "you should".
However, there is no kung-fu quality of knowing how to "hack". There is a quality to knowing how a computer works, how they can be exploited, and how they can be repaired. It's the knowledge of computers that will get a person to a point in which they can contribute to the community, sometimes make money, and sometimes just get noticed.
Then there's the smeg-heads who are the l33tz0r hax0rts d00dz that... don't get it.
I was a Vonage customer for almost a year and a half. I enjoyed the service, but did realize that I was paying for 500 minutes whether I used them or not (just like a cell phone).
Next problem is I moved, and I found a better deal through my phone company. You may want to check and see what deals your current phone provider has before you jump on the VoIP wagon.
VoIP is an excellent solution for people who are on the phone long distance for more than just your usual call to your relatives to check up.
I looked at my useage and already had a cell phone. I must say, in the grand scheme of things that VoIP was not a solution for me any longer.
Canceling Vonage takes close to an act of congress. You have to call their cancellation center (forget that it's only open 7.5 hours a day monday - friday) then you have to sit on hold (forget the fact that it's like any other call center that you wait a fair amount of time on hold) and then you are given a Return number. Also you are given a $40 charge to your credit card. You have to scrounge up the power supply, ata box, phone cord, ethernet cord, and manual. If you're like me and you know that you'd eventually have to return this stuff, you kept all that in a box in the closet. If you don't return everything, you don't get the refund.
I was very impressed with Vonage until the very end in which they would not let me cancel my service until I heard a song and dance and agreed that I didn't want their service any more.
If you have a cell phone with long distance and rarely ever need to make a lengthy long distance phone call, VoIP ain't it.
And what of the children of the children? Were they part of the 'war machine' as well? Japan was the enemy to America in WWII, they attacked Pearl
Harbor, and many Allied troops lost their lives taking Japan.
You call me a bleeding heart who can't understand, when it appears that you don't understand a damned thing. This bomb was dropped and destroyed an entire city. Read the article that was mentioned here, read about the doctors trying to figure out what to do about radiation poisoning, and go read about what happens to the generations of children who were born from parents exposed to said radiation. Then tell me that those INNOCENT CIVILIANS were the enemy. In fact, how about you take a trip over to Japan right now and tell them that "It's all your fault because you were part of the war machine!". What's next?? You going to tell me that the Jewish Concentration camps were the Jews fault?
I'm not sure I would consider the explosion and later fallout going into an unpopulated area to be a "loss".
Not trying to nit-pick your comment, but thousands of people died and generations are still seeing the adverse reprocussions of the radiation poisoning. I guess I just wanted to make sure that a respectful sympathy is honored, most all of those killed by the blast were civilians.
Welcome to the world of paternalism and Mill's Theory of Utility. I'd give a nutshell, but knowing what I know of Mill's a nutshell would do no one any favors. For those interested... start here...
Needless to say this poses the question of "Harm" and how we as a society can protect ourselves from harm. The slippery slope that is the enforcement of morality.
Where can you make sure that any law can be passed? Do it for the protection of the innocent and impressionable children. Illinois just recently PASSED a law that will ban the sale of violent video games to minors. Obscenity laws can be found on the federal to township levels.
Does any of this make sense? Do drug laws, obscenity laws, prostitution laws, marriage laws, sex laws, liquor laws, or a slew of other laws make sense? If you ask Mill's or a number of libertarians, no. The only laws that make sense are those that protect against harm. Physical harm can be easily identified, it's the mental harm that people get so cloudy on.
If I do drugs am I harming anyone (assume that in this case that drug making, transportation, and selling is legal)? Am I harming anyone when a willing partner is ready to sell their sexual services and I take them up of the offer (assume that in this case protection is used... etc)?
Don't get me wrong, I'm agreeing with you and not assuming you don't know about Utility, just trying to expand on your claim a little further.
Rockhound - "You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?"
For anyone out there looking for a job in the IT field, software engineering, system analyst, or anything else dealing with a computer that needs a Computer Science (or equivalent degree)...
I have this advice.
1.) Please show up to every interview in jeans and tennis shoes.
2.) Ties are for squares, don't wear one.
3.) Make sure your hair is a "neon" color or at least one or more tones.
4.) Come to the interview hung over, or even better, drunk.
5.) Please ensure that you do something to show your independence in the interview (IE: Belch, break wind, use curse words, or make a durrogatory comment).
6.) When posed with a serious question, please reflect on any time you may have broken the law.
7.) Ensure that they KNOW who's boss by demanding a salary of 3 times the average for someone with your skills/experience.
8.) NEVER EVER shake their hands.
I emplore you all who are looking for a job to please do each one of the line items mentioned above...
Did I mention I'm looking for a job? (Just doing my part to better my odds...)
OR... my favorite... find a sturdy hard surface...put the phone on it as centered as possible... and apply quick and ample pressure from repeated hits of a hammer.
I mean the whole useing linux thing was only temporary... right?
Wait, why are we wanting to call it GNU/Linux still?
Don't like it, go play with your own OS!!
The entire idea of HURD, while wonderful in theory is a waste of time, and the project hasn't been set back by years because of anything other than LINUX ALREADY WORKS.
I mean I am not one to stifle innovation, but HURD will never ever be where Linux is, because no one except slashdot and Stallman care.
I guess I'm just a flamebaiting troll, but as if you'd expect anything less from a story about HURD.
I use Vonage here at home. The $15 plan seems to be more than enough (seeing as I'm obviously not popular enough to justify the unlimited plan). Granted the quality can be rather harsh sometimes, but thats because I'm using most of my bandwidth for something else.
If you give vonage 128kpbs both directions it will be the quality of a cell phone. Not absolutely perfect, but well within the range of acceptable. I've spent hours at a time on the phone with vonage and let me tell you, its leaps and bounds above the good old days of dialpad.com.
So will VoIP be a big player in `05, you bet your ass it will. Considering mainly that landline telephones cost so much more and offer very little justification for it. With VoIP and cell phones, I predict a death for standard copper land lines by at least 2015.
Theres a BIG difference then trolling on the front page, (IE: RPM SUCKS) and stating fact (IE: "Deb packaging sucks and is too political, as always")
The difference, you see trolls on the front page, and rarely fact, thats what linking to the article is for, let someone else deal with the pesky facts...
Did you read the review? RPM Sucks is just one of many wonderful inexperienced writings that come out in this review. Ohh well what do you expect, its christmas eve, no one is home =)
One of these would be great for situations I frequently find myself in...
... many college campuses are "WiFi Ready" or whatever catch phrase the IT department wants to use to talk about 802.11x access.
Thankfully poor planning, lack of funds, etc will cause there to be many upon many of blind spots in the buildings, these would be much more useful than carrying around a laptop and watching the indicator on the screen.
Especially useful when the AP's are "hidden" to be more asthetically pleasing.
I'm all about advancing science, but with the number of people worldwide waiting for organs wouldn't this prove to be "wasteful". That was a heart that a human being could have had and the same with the liver. There was nothing wrong with the sheep before, and there was no pressing need to put a human heart into it except to say "Lookee here we done put a human heart into a sheep!".
The question isnt about evolution, the question is about ethics. Should we as humans be "playing god"?
I believe so. Thats not to say that I am correct though.
Was this a waste? Looking at the rate of organ rejection and other complications not to mention the recepient already being in bad health, it could have easily failed inside of a human and worked in a sheep.
There are thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people waiting for organs who go without everyday because people don't sign their organ donor cards or because family members refuse to let them be a donor.
If anything let this article serve as a beacon of hope for the future and a reminder to let your family know if you are an organ donor.
Even with the rate of failure of transplants, you don't need them when you're dead.
This _IS_ a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack program. While they may verify that the site does not "stop", this will clog the servers with requests. While it may be a PR move to not call this a DDoS, it most certianly is. The only way it may not be is if your definition of DDoS implies that the server will eventually stop responding to all non "client that creates multiple connections" IP's.
Note also that this is for Europe only. While there is nothing from stopping you from downloading and running this program outside the US, it is technically for europe only.
Even if you check the site, it explains how site it "targets" are slowing response times.
Is this shady, yes.
Question? If you are being harmed by something and want it to stop and there is no other recourse but to take the matter into your own hands, is that wrong?
Answer: It's up for debate.
If someone was on a daily basis causing me to sift through hundreds of emails, losing important messages, having the spam filter delete it accidentally, or having to wait for everything to update in order to assure that I have all my mail, then yeah this is justified.
They care not about your resources, time, or anoyance levels, why the hell should you?
Vigilante justice is not pretty, but it does get the job done.
I dont get why putting it behind the entertainment system makes that not possible?
I guess if you were to rip your "personally owned" dvd's one by one once a day, maybe, but I would assume that you would just schedule some time, and have an all day rip a thon and be done with it.
Personally I just keep my dvds in a stack and when I want to watch one... pick it up... place it in the dvd player... and hit play.
Then again, I cant remember the last time I watched most of the dvds in my dvd collection anyways.
Okay so I had no idea what the hell an HTPC was, but before reading the article I was sure it was some type of disease... I was wrong
the Home Theater Personal Computer is no disease so rest assured you can breath again.
Now I understand the use of having a computer as part of your home entertainment system, and I see the merit in wanting it to "blend" with the rest of the objects in said entertainment setup.
Here's where I get a little fuzzy...
Am I the only one who just tossed their pc behind the entertainment center all together? With remote control (SSH/VNC/ATI Remote/Wireless Mouse) do you really need it sitting out and about?
As far as DVD goes, I already have a standalone player so there was no need to use the computer for dvd playback.
And as far as gaming goes, my gamecube with the wavebird suits me just fine.
So I guess I'm just wondering what this is useful for.
... Seeing as the icebergs could fall into the ocean, and then drift out to warmer sea, and then cause the ocean to desalinate.
Thus then affecting the ocean current and temperatures of said currents. Then cause the climate to abruptly change.
Then when you think it couldnt get any worse, super storms would emerge and cause hurricanes to form over land. The hurricanes would have such a strong force that they'd (bear with me here)...
That they'd cause the STRATOSPHERE to come to the surface of the earth. Causing instantaneous freezign of everything in the eye of said land based hurricanes.
As if that wasn't bad enough I predict this would cause 3/4 of the north america, europe and asia's populations to be killed. Thus causing the rest of the populations to move to mexico.
But alas, this can all be prevented if we stop burning fossil fuels, hug a tree, and act like RMS.
Also note, in the event a land based hurricane does bring the STRATOSPHERE down to the earths surface immediately find the nearest library or wendy's and stay there. If you have a tent, be sure to set the tent up in the kitchen of wendy's.
You know what, this whole plot seems like the story for a HORRIBLE movie, I better write it down and call 20th century fox.
am too :-(
Wow, I thought it was weird when I kept seeing "SuperDuG" in the screenshots. Then I recognized it as one of the stories I posted a few years ago.
I'm famous?

As I'm sure you're aware, but quite a few fedora users are not. YUM stands for Yellowdog Updater Modified.
Obviously its not the actual yellowdog updater for fedora, mandrake, etc, but the original design does in fact come from yellowdog.
Yellowdog is by far the most hardened mac distribution there is, and for good reason, there are a lot of talented people working at yellow dog.
