I understand the issues, I'm just extremely skeptical over whether this is some legitimate, or whether its NYTimes hoopla. Right now, I say its hoopla, simply because I have no reason to believe that billions of mysterious massive particles are flowing through me each second, and we have _yet_ to detect them. This is 99.99% theory at this point and 0.01% fact. The fact is that there's matter out there that we can't see. Blaming it on massive particles that weakly interact with regular mass is as valid as saying little elves are moving things around. Its a hypothesis thats just too absurd in my mind. I'm going to read their paper when its published. I'll make my conclusion then, but right now I just don't buy it.;)
The term 'dark matter' is simply matter that we cannot see. When astrophysicists are looking for dark matter, what they're actually trying to do is see gas, dust and dead stars that are not luminous. Dark matter is not a different form of matter, its just matter that has settled into the 3 degrees Kelvin equilibrium of space, and is therefore undetectable, unless heated by an external force. "Though astronomers have been measuring the gravitational pull of the dark matter since the 1930's, they have never succeeded in detecting it directly." I assume with this statement they're refering to the velocity vs distance from the center for stars in a galaxy. Its always been known that the fact that the stars in a spiral galaxy rotate with uniform motion, like a disk, simply because of the amount of dust and gas in between the stars.
If you ask me, I call this someones "what if" explaination, and attempted proof, that will quickly be disproved if it does in fact have any scientific basis. Of course, when this happens however, it won't make it to the presses;)

Don't you worry, the Chinese apparently are planning on going there in the not too distant future. Kind of a scarey thought if you ask me. Although I would like to see another space race fire off. While they're going to the Moon, we could go to Mars... that'd be cool sh!t.
The Moon and Earth are too bright for Hubble's cameras. Hubble is vamped to look at extremely dim objects, so looking at a the Moon or Earth would be like looking at the sun through a magnifying glass... it'd destroy your vision.
When I was talking about b&w photos, I wasn't refering to the technology;)
All the photos are in color (or most of them atleast), and its just interesting seeing a color photo with only one spot of red or blue anywhere in the picture. If the spot were not there, then you would have no way of knowing it was actually in color at all. That was my point;)
I asked for this book for xmas. It rocks. The pictures in it are so incredible. One of the coolest things about the moon pics is that you think they're a black and white photo until you catch a glimpse of a copper deposit in the dirt, or some red patch on a space suit. Its almost a color-less world on the moon.
Its completely true. We all know that Sun has a grudge against Linux and OSS in general, and this is just a good example of how they don't want to participate. It really is a shame though, because the potential for Java is huge, so long as things are done correctly; unfortunately they're not.
Optimization is irrelevent. It works under Solaris and NT, therefore it should work under Linux. Optimizing specificly for Linux goes against everything Java stands for. The fact is that RMI under Linux is severely crippled.
I admire the Blackdown crew, and the work they've done to get the JVM working under Linux. Unfortunately however, its not something I can use to write a professional application if I expect it to work properly.
I've done a lot of Java development under Linux this year, and I've noticed several things that prevent me from doing serious work with Java (under Linux). For example, rmiregistry crashes without fail for any type of heavily loaded RMI project. Another example is that Thread objects break just as easily, or refuse to start altogether when you spawn multiple Threads (even if there is plenty of memory available). Luckily I have access to a cluster of Ultra5's to test my applications on, which execute almost flawlessly (I've noticed a few quirks with Threads under Solaris as well, but not nearly as bad as under Linux). I see the state of the JVM under Linux as being close to a toy. I know all the Blackdown people will probably find this insulting, but unfortunately, I can't do hard-core Java the way I can under Solaris. I do not blame Blackdown in any way for this however. I feel that this is solely Sun's fault. Thats my $0.02 on the issue. I love Blackdown, I love Java. Bugs suck.
Except, obviously they're very bad at what they do. They have an international spy agency setup to intercept phonecalls, etc. in their own country. I think the French are just looking for an excuse as to why their country produces nothing... I'd blame it on socialism, their 35 hour work week, and the fact that they all smell like crap. (last part is a joke of course;)
I never said they were fired, I'm merely stating the fact that, you _can't_ say whatever you want about your employer and expect to keep your job. You're wrong that sick-outs force people to work. Nobody is forcing you to go to work in the morning and get paid. By organizing a sick-out, you revoke the privilage of having a job. Just because you don't want to work one weekend and you fake sick, doesn't mean you have the right to work at that job ever again. Especially if your company is reliant on you to do your job. You can't expect to screw your company, who pays you, hence allows you to eat and have a secure job, while faking sick and not working. Just because the job is there this week doesn't mean it'll be there next week. Its not your God-given right to have a job, its a privilage that nobody forces you to undertake. Nobody has to hire you. You talk about me being a bad capitalist, well you're nothing but a socialist. If you don't like the system, which seems to be in favor for everyone right now, then you can move to France and see how things chugg along over there. Socialists need not respond, because we're talking about this capitalist country.
Well I was speaking from a legal sense. Unions do complicate things, however organizing a sickout is a perfect example of how they have every right to fire someone. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the worker and his rights, but if you're being mistreated, then you strike, but if you're not, you don't organize a sickout because you're disgruntled... thats just lame in my opinnion
Ok, let me re-state my argument for the inherently slow.
They have every right to search anything they own. You're not allowed to speak badly about or take actions against your employer and expect to keep your job (obviously sexual harrassement and cases of the like are different). They can search your home computer if they have a court order. They can search your work computer whenever they want, and don't need to tell you shit.
now.... how I've swayed from my argument is beyond me, but these are the breaks. I wouldn't even call this an argument, because these are facts.
Yeah, its about invasion of privacy, _AND_ not being able to say whatever the hell you want about your employer. Of course you can, freedom of speech, etc. You just can't expect to keep your job! As for the PC's, etc. if the company owns the PC, or if your PC is taken as evidence in a court case, then yeah, they can invade your privacy like that. They legally have every right to do whatever they want to the computer you use at work, whether it be read your email, or rm -rf/, its their PC. PC's at home on the other hand require some type of court order, in which case its up to the legal system.
Don't quote me here, I'm not an expert, but I believe thats how it works.
The company is your *employer*. They do not need a reason to fire you, they just can. If you say something nasty about the company, then you're 100% liable if you get fired, regardless of how insane it may sound. Now chances are they won't fire you criticizing your boss about something. Organizing a sick-out however is plenty motive.
Look, Katz is a hack, and everyone knows it. He's here mostlikely for financial reasons because he generates hits. My comment is a representation of how people feel about him. We want an option to not have him on this site. When people get annoyed, they blow steam about it... which unfortunately generates hits for/. However, as time goes on, people will stop blowing their steam and leave/. altogether. /. can either listen to its screaming userbase, or they can lose their userbase. Its not a threat, its just an honest suggestion. You piss off your users and eventually they'll leave you. Its not a very hard concept to understand. I know how databases work, and I know its not difficult to filter a based on the word "katz" in someones post. I'm not suggesting it for ALL comments, just the initial posts on the main page. Personal God != God. Personal God means that he doesn't believe God fits to his ideals. He doesn't have any certain outlook on what God wants/is/idealogies/etc. This just means that he doesn't believe in religious convictions. Its very different from not believing there's a God.
I had a feeling someone would throw this quote out there;-)
Genius. Lets restate what I've stated: The difference between a mythology and a religion, is that the individual classifies it as such. Translation (for stupid people): The individual (you or me), has each his own definition of the difference between a religion and a mythology. i.e. I believe generally in Catholicism, which I should descibe more specificly as the teachings of Christ (I personally believe that the Old Testiment was more of a rule book with stories than anything else). I believe that worshipping Zeus and the Greek gods is a mythology. That doesn't mean that it wasn't ever considered a religion or that you may still practice religiously.
As for your final statement. i don't respect the KKK, and i definately don't respect christianity (in any form.) This just announces your ignorance to the world. Do I have respect for the KKK? No, absolutely not. Do I have respect for the individuals in the KKK? Believe it or not, I actually do, and this is why: They're human-beings and I believe they are making a mistake. They've been taught to hate, and they've collapsed into a depressing abyss that they needs help from escaping. Nobody is inherently hateful, they must learn it. Do I have respect for Christianity? Absolutely. Christianity stands 100% for dealing with people like you who are ignorant to how people work, love, hate, etc. Now the practice of Christianity has been flawed, but of course you should expect this because we are all human-beings. I highly suggest you go out and read, in detail the New Testament, not for religious reasons, but rather for insight on how people work. I also suggest you watch American History X. It may give you a little insight into the human psyche.
I honestly feel bad for you, because you're your own worst enemy with that attitude.
"I want to know God's thoughts,..... the rest are details.." -- Albert Einstein.
"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." -- Galileo Galilei
etc. The rules of Physics are the rules that God made. Rules are meant to be broken, but that doesn't mean that we, as humans, can break them. Just because someone may be scientific doesn't make them atheist, and just because someone is religious doesn't mean they're non-scientific.
Look, saying that there's no anti-Christian sentiment in Katz' stuff is a bit ridiculous.
The difference between a mythology and a religion, is that the individual classifies it as such. At the same time, the vast majority of Christian people on this planet do not criticize other religions. Of course, it does happen, but those are the ones who are vocal.
Katz should have just a slight amount of respect for other religions. Respect is one step higher from tolerance, and tolerance is one step higher from holocaust. He exorcises tolerance from what I've read.
Let me tell you, you sound extremely intelligent too. If you hadn't noticed, I have Katz filtered, and therefore choose not to read his crap. But when Taco posts something for Katz to expand his market, I get annoyed and vocal about it. He's taking advantage of the fact that I do not want to read Katz' crap.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for not totally understanding my stance on this.

Or is it to force people who have Katz filtered to join in on the conversation? I'd really like to know your reasons. Please get back to me.
