  3. IBM re-gaining power... on IBM's assault on Microsoft · · Score: 2

First up, this is my view on the *current* IBM. I hear they may have had a shady past (before me following things.. only 22 :P), but I am judging by current events....

OK, so IBM is a global corporation, that is ultimately looking out for itself.

Similar to Microsoft, or Microsoft all over again you say?

There is a difference, IBM is going about things the RIGHT way. Whereas Microsoft uses marketing, pushing glitz over stability, the perpetual hardware upgrades, etc, IBM has been pushing open source and standards compliance.

If IBM pushing open source results in more open source, and more power to IBM, then so be it.

Ill be glad for them so long as they continue to do the "right thing".

Maybe the company has even learned something this time around with regards to what customers really want/need.

A saying that Microsoft seems to not understand, "Don't shit in your own backyard" springs to mind ;)

i mean, a 100mb/sec connection is all well and good, but when the backbone is saturated to hell with 400 other 100mb/sec users its kinda pointless....

still.. assuming they have a decent cache it would rock :P

    a) (for example) - i have an image involving sodomy and a goat on my personal page called bleh.jpg. how is this found and censored?

    b) as I understand it, most ISPs (like us for example) in Australia require you to be 18 to sign up. if a kids parents lets him/her browse unsupervised, its their problem.

    c) as someone above mentioned, most australian ISPs use proxy servers already (bandwidth is a killer here). how is the banned list going to keep up with web site development? how is it to be updated? or is some magic image recognition meant to scan every image (and every yet to be implemented file format) for porn? :P can you say *performance hit* (even assuming it was possible)

i had more to say, but pizza turned up :P

    heh...

what we need is browser makers to stop trying to make HTML do exactly the same stuff as you can do with DTP programs (ie get pixel perfect layout control).

HTML isnt meant to look exactly the same on every computer. it is meant to lay content out in the best way for your system.

makes me laugh... sites that set their sites up for 640x480 screens.. then running them in 1280x1024 or so...

  8. ah.. and for those bitching about kernel news... on Linux kernel 2.3.1 Gifted Unto Us · · Score: 1

A new kernel is released. So.. thats not necessarily earth shattering news...

BUT, to all the people whining about it:

I (and I am guessing many others) are interested in reader's comments on the kernels which are released ;) Sure.. there is the kernel mailing list, but thats pretty heavy traffic, unless you get the digest, which is then pretty slow (a few times a day).

So.... i think there IS a place for kernel news here ;)
