    What that page doesn't say is which laws are enforced and which aren't.

    E.g. 'whispering in your lover's ear' isn't, in my experience, enforced.

    The pumping gas one is.

    If the software did work like that (and I don't think it does based on the article) it would be useless.

    If they offer dummy files with the same name as copyrighted material then downloaders haven't committed any copyright infringment - they've downloaded a couple of megabytes of garbage and have therefore done nothing wrong.

    If they offer the real thing and track who downloads; then doesn't the fact that they allowing free downloads of their copyrighted material affect the status of their copyright? If they're not protecting their material properly then they can't accuse anyone of abusing the copyright.

    Whatever they offer for download they've lost the case.

    2) An untrue accusation of theft is a serious slander/libel. You would seek compensation in whatever manner your local legal system allowed.

    The acceleration during the 3 foot drop is obviously 1G. The deceleration when it hits the ground is what is being measured.

    The children need a project to work on. Whatever the language, learning the basic principles just by writing small programs simply to illustrate those principles gets boring quickly. You need to find something achievable, with some quickly achievable and satisfying early milestones.

    Probation is not supposed to be punitive. It is supposed to help the offender - get a job, avoid crime, etc. etc. depending on circumstances.

    I don't think the comparision between the MS and AOL monopolies is particularly relevent.

    MS controls what you use to view content (IE vs NS)

    AOL controls what you view (and, incidently, what you use).

    When it comes down to it, what appears in the big empty space in window is much more important than who's bit of code was used to render it.

    The sooner they get the high-end chips out then the sooner the low-end chips drop in price. No-one can afford the 1Ghz chips, but the 500's are cheaper as a result.

    Yes it is true. Lots of disks have the copyright warning at the beginning that can't be skipped (30 seconds-ish)and a few have advert from the studio - it's usually 30 seconds or so of quickly flashed images from their films. I've yet to see an entire trailer that can't be skipped.

    I, like many others in this industry, live in a country where I am not allowed to vote.

    I can't vote in America because I'm here on a visa, it will be many years before I can become a citizen, assuming I wish do to so.

    The country of which I am a citizen is thousands of miles away and although physical distance is less important today, I still feel isolated from what's going on their politically.

    There was an article on CNN (I think) the other day describing the large number of technical people working in California who are on H1B visas from India, but it didn't say what proportion of the geek population are non-citizens.

    Can anyone make a good guess?
