I couldn't care less what Xi says about XFree. It is free country, brother- and what's more, at this time they are right ( maybe will change with XFree 4.0.) Think what are you proposing. Ignoring company with a good product simply because it pointed out that XFree lags behind? Are we here fighting political war or simply doing business ?
Dude, you have to realize that most of this was in response to the threat from Soviets. Some of these actions were mistakes but you have to understand that there is fundamental difference between USA and say, China. If you don't , then you are simply.. well, intelectually challenged.
BTW. Ha.. I don't get any help from goverment in US. Why should hispanics, blacks and indians get money from goverment ( they do..) If you find anything in constitution that supports your claim, let me know...
And finally, if it bothers you so much - get the fuck out of this rotten western world. Go enjoy fruits of revolution to places like Cuba, China etc... You have a choice to do that . their people don't.
You are right about MS being scared about new stuff comming out. But you are wrong about them doing nothing. Look at IE... it is way better then any version of netscape ever was.
I have hard time understanding how the hell one is supposed to use office soft over the net. In fact, this sounds pathetic to me. We have powerfull CPUs with lots of memory and the only thing most people don't have is a decent pipe to the internet. Where is the logic in that? I can understand Sun's position ( they truly hate PCs) but I think MS is making big mistake being drawn into this "race"...
Anyone here who actually looks forward to this kind of computing ?? Any comments ?
Heheh.. It is amazing how easily Linux bigots tend to forget that their OS is simply cheap clone of the real thing ( and not even as good as the real thing)
From the technical point of view there is nothing innovative about Linux , absolutely nothing... Shit, even MS is being more innovative... Linux development mostly consists of various groups of developers trying to catch up with commercial offerings. How innovative is that ??
There are some people in NYPD that are cruel bastards. How incredible !!
How can you compare that to killing people by milions that went on in China ??
YOu don't know dick about what's going on out there.. trust me USA is a heaven compared to most of the world. I know . I lived in fucking eastern block for 20 years.
I don't care what Communism is in theory. Why should I ? Anytime anyone tried to implement this "system" it ended with complete disaster both economically and socialy ( not to mention countless suffering.)
This leds me to belive that there is a fatal flaw build into this ideology and it simply is not workable in practice.
I am not trolling here... Just look at the recent trend - almost every distribution comes with KDE as default desktop. This should count for something. KDE changed the desktop on Unix/Linux.
Troll is extremely cool company. They offered Qt for free long before Linux was "cool" in the media and were very supportive of KDE projects.
No it is not. You know, I have been doing GUI stuff for years and I have seen and learned a lot of strange lessons. I set layouts to be null for eveything I create so there is no internal repositioning ( very easy to check... just stick System.out.printl() on pain()... )
Nope. I do set layout to be null for eveything I create and I use fontmetrics when positioning labels and edits. I am aware of the problems you mentioned and I specifically checked my app with different fonts and sizes and everything works fine. Basically I have crated my own, very specific layout manager, and it works well, certainly better than standard layouts. The reason I do that is when using default layouts on some complicated screen structures, one needs to create many panels to accomodate different layouts in order to get desired results ( I did mention it was rather complicated screen ?? ) It is certainly faster then example apps that come with swing so I don't think my coding is here at fault. And I am happy with the results I got as far as the purpose of this app goes ( static entry screen.) It is simply that after working with native GUIs the slowness of swing is very apparent.
One more thing:I am using 1.1.7b on Linux and 1.1.2 on Windows ( that's it the JDK the whole project is running on so I don't have a choice here)
Perceived slowness ? No. It is very true slowness. I had to implement GUI client using Java and Swing ( nothing fancy, typical entry screen with about 20 different controls) and Swing was nothing but frustration. Feature-wise, it is very modern and offers many usefull classes but what's the point of this sophistication when on your average 200 Mhz system with generic S3 card it takes literally seconds to reposition controls after app resizing. And I am not talking about using layers of panels + layouts , forget that, I used one panel and manually repositioned controls on paint event. Better than using layouts but still slow... Another issue... depending on some data being entered my app was supposed to disable some controls and enable others - guess what, you can literally see controls being disabled, one by one.
With this kind of performance, no wonder that VB is the king of this kind of apps. Do you see any solution to that problem , cause I don;t....
Techie who knows VB and is able to implement reasonable solution usingt that tool is just as valuable as a guy who knows how to set up/programm Unix. In fact, for some, he is much more valuable. Sometimes I get impression that the only thing left for Unix guys is the pride that they know much more than MS crowd ( which is not always the case anyway... there are tons of people using C++ on Windows)
Finally, something that will allow commercial companies to port high end rendering software to Linux.
Very good news indeed.

Windows doesn't blue screen that often. And yes it is right choice for her .... Linux shouldn't even be considered here.
BUt right now, IE is much better browser so this is natural that more and more people are starting to use it.
As of now IE wins.

Sun cannot do that.
... are you serious ?
Help them for nothing ??
hmm

MOtif has nothing to do with Oracle .. It is GUI toolkit.

...
Draw your own conclusions
hehhe
When ??
You talking about something that happened 100 years ago ??
Any examples ?
Why XMMS uses GTK ??
..
Just to use file requester I have to install all this stuff ?
Pointless
Too bad it has one big resriction ...
.. how about you ?
It forces anybody reusing GPL code to spread GPl virus even further.
That sounds like a restriction to me
Yeah .. Scary !!
There are some people in NYPD that are cruel bastards. How incredible !!

"parallel laws"?
Why don't you go and fuck yourself one more time ?
Where do you get this bullshit from ? I truly hope it is your own making and not from somebody else.

Sun's JDK on win and Blackdown ( spelling??) on Linux.
One more thing, Using MS JDK ( J++) + swing results in substancially better performance than Sun's.
Linux JDKs is much slower, in fact it is probably one of the slowest I ever seen.

Yeah, some do and I will tell you ... I will not do it again. There are definately better ways to do this.
Perceived slowness ? ... depending on some data being entered my app was supposed to disable some controls and enable others - guess what, you can literally see controls being disabled, one by one.
