He may criticize them but to tell the truth, they have a right to do whatever they want. They own the software - "own" the magic word that makes whole world going. There is no proven better business model than that...
You might prefer GTk and that's fine with me but after checking out GTk and working with Motif and Win32 API for long time I can assure you that QT is quite amazing.
It is nice of them to release the source code but, to tell the truth, I have never seen anyone use VRML outside of sites of people who either develop or are somehow connected with VRLM. One can find JavaScript, Java, Flash and similar technologies all over the Internet - not so with VRML. Can we finally say, the technology did not work out, forget it, try something else... ?
I would guess because JAVA is very slow for this kind of applications. Staroffice , as it is - writtent in C or C++ is slow, imagine how slow must be the Java version.
I constantly hear people bitching about MS office file formats being proprietary and generally incompatible with anything on the market. I wonder if abiword and, say, KWord will be able to exchange data _without_ loosing any formating information.
"The widgets used for this are native to E, not GTK+. "
That's quite stupid. There are at least two small and very efficient widget libraries (FLTK and Windowmakers Wings ) available and what do we have here ?? Raster will come up with another set.... I think I will puke next time I hear somebody mentioning that open source facilitates source code reuse.. Joke.
Don't forget to try Windows 95 on your 486. I bet it will be much faster than either Gnome or KDE. This is not a flame , just another fact to consider for those who continue to imply that X is just as good or even better than Win32 graphics subsystem...
Again, I agree with you. I just don't see that happening anytime soon. Linux is , by the design, completely customizable, one can put configuration files wherever he/she wants and this fact alone will make it very diffucult to create some sort of unnified sys admin software that will work on most distibutions. It is Unix and it follows exactly the same path ( every vendor customizing their own offering just to be different.)
We will see more and more GUI based sys admin software but it will mostly work on specific distibution only.
Microsoft is checking out the competition. I don't see anything unusuall here.. standard business practice. BTW.. I am pretty sure they will conclude that as a desktop Linux is way behind Windows and therefore there is nothing to worry about. And you know what ? They would be right. Linux is NOT ready for the market MS owns now and won't be for some time ( and don't forget,it is unlikely that MS will be waiting for them to catch up.)
Yeah, a lot more but if you look at the ratios you will see that for each crime commited by "white trash" there are 5 commited by black people. Check the facts.
Amen brother. They should get rid of all those "spiritual and political leaders" and get to work just like everybody else. And remember , everytime you vote for the democrat, you compound the problem even more.
Yeah, there were two main camps. ZX Spectrum, Amstrad, MSX, CP/M computers on the one side and Atari, Apple , Commodore on the other side. In fact C-128 has two processors buid in : motorola (6502) and Z-80 for CP/M mode.
VC++ is not true C++ ?? Are you fucking nuts ? You don't have to be so politically correct (read :./ correct ) here, you know... If I could I would much rather use VC++ on Linux than egcs - it is simply better on X86. As for Java, hehe. MS Java used to be fastest and most reliable around - recently I have lost track of it but I assume it haven't changed that much.
Stop whining. People are not being forced to buy Windows. Of all the people interested in buying computer I have met, every one of the wanted to have Windows on it preinstalled ( with bunch of other MS apps.)It is simply good business for various companies to sell "ready to go" computers - otherwise they would go out of business. Simple as that. Beside, there are many other choices if you don't want to pay for MS OS.

I am wondering if anybody was able to use ttf fonts with Staroffice ( both , on the screen and on the printout.)
Gee.. men, you sound like you religiously HATE Windows. ..
Calm down, you might get an ulcer or something

Why FUD ? It is true that Linux isn't ready for the desktop? There is no need for them to distort the reality.

They will call it "based on RedHat" and it will sell just as well...
I don't see much future for RH.
Yep. You are right. I was wondering myself, since I rarely go to their site.
Making money from selling stock ?
Ha, that's funny - eventually they have to start turning profit or the whole thing is simply a joke.

"Traditional British Values" ?? ..
What's that ? Never heard about them
And what would you recommend for that "person" to use instead of Word ?
No, it woudn't. Look at the industry, if somebody codes for Windows 80 % of time his tool is VC++.
Knowledge of this product is expected !

Profs then are not very flexible are they ? ...
I wouldn't want to have a prof that _refuses_ to teach certain technology
So what ? You will be able to look at ita nd possibly learn (yes .. there are some things that NT does much better than Unix)
