I just got in the mail info about Linux Business Expo in Las Vegas. On the technical track there is conference called "Linux on the desktop - GNOME" with M.de Icaza as a presenter. Nothing about KDE. This is quite funny - you know, it seems as if Gnome is present everywhere , interviews, conferences, what have you... And what about KDE ??? Nothing, it just works, no hype no fancy interviews about unbelivable cool future plans - they simply work on their stuff and I think, this is one of the reasons KDE is so far ahead of Gnome. Less bullshit, more real work being that on that project.
Dude, one mistake and you are up in the arms about my spelling. Well, consider this - English is my second language and therefore I don't give a damn what some AC looser thinks about it...
MGA ?? I have G200 and tested it both AcceX and XFree ( using x11pref ) and on almost every test AccelX was substancialy faster. In fact, one doesn't need benchmarks to notice that.
Haven't tried Q3Test but the driver itself is rather slow... It is much much slower than G200 on another Linux box I have here so I think support for Voodoo is still in experimental stage.
I wonder why AcceleratedX consistently outperforms XFree sometimes by factor 2 to 1. Is this related to having better access to hardware specs or simply having better programmers ?
Yes, I have tried FLTK and for what it does it is very usable. I truly like small size of the code ( I remember original author mentioning that this was one of his goals - to allow people create static links and still keep code size reasonable) The only problem is that FLTK is not as full featured as Qt. But, yes, if there was no Qt I would use either FLTK or FOX .
How about simple fact that it is their product and they have every right to be paid for the wonderful software they have created. It seems so natural and honest - it is amazing that so many people try to deny them that right.
Of coure it is open source. For me term "open source" means exactly that - I get access to the source code of whatever I am using. I think the most stupid requirment of GPL is one forcing authors to allow other people to distribute software ( and charge for it ). Complete bullshit. Troll would never survive under GPL - it simply shows that GPL will NOT work as everybody here on/. seems to be advocating.
If you develop for Win make sure that you use Windows theme ( or something like that , I assume there is such for GTK ), otherwise it won't do you much good... I would love to see people who run "interface hall of shame" to take a look at , for example, GIMP interface and see what they say. I am quite sure it would end up right next to Lotus Notes on their list... heh
I think you don't know what are you talking about. Windows has much better tools than Unix ever had. Say, DDD - very nice debugger but still lags behind tools that MS includes in their VS. There are some nice things about Unix ( for example tons of avaiable source code ) but the tools are definately inferior...
Maybe on the server side but on the desktop it is exactly opposite. Linux is littered with worthless GUI software that doesn't even come close to quality of software available for Windows.
While it is acceptable for some minor stuff there is no point in using it once you hit something larger. I wonder why people don't use Sybase - it is free for production, very nice database that can handle a lot of stuff.Extremely easy to use, programm - there is excelent PHP3 support (well , as good as PHP3 offers - generally database interface in PHP3 is one of the most idiotic designs I ever seen)
COnsider this, once a while somebody figures out way to get admin access on NT ( very rare - only couple cases...) On Linux - every friggin week there is security update related to some package allowing people to get root access ( specially RH is full of those ) I am not trolling , those are the facts.
Superior ?? Who told you that ? Mac bigots, perhaps.
What are the other reasons ?? 50 % tax rate ?
People would,'t know that. Right now, when one buys computer he/she does just that. Hardly anybody even realizes that there is something called OS.
Heheh.
To Gnome of all projects ??

AcceleratedX on G400 is the fastest card yet - look up www.xig.com, they have benchmarks. It is just as fast as on Windows.Really sweet.
I wonder why AcceleratedX consistently outperforms XFree sometimes by factor 2 to 1. Is this related to having better access to hardware specs or simply having better programmers ?
Would you prefer to run GIMP or Wordperfect in the comand line mode ??
Whow .. That's cool. Wouldn't it bother you if somebody packaged and marketed it better then you can and stole 90 % of your business ?
It would be GPL at its best.
You pay for QT on Win you get the source code.

I agree. It is sad that such a wonderfull piece of software doesn't get deserved recognition in the Linux world.
Sad.

How about petitioning Watcom for their compiler. Recently I received notice from them that Watcom C++ will not be developed any further ...
It is quite ugly and I don't use GNOME so what's the point ???
..
KDE and Qt works fine for me

Oh come on. Don't be so pesymistic. I would rather use Opera even with MDI than Netscape.
Yeah, That is the problem it seems GPL doesn't have a good answer to.
... that's the only way to make money, sell support.
Perhaps, this is the reason most of the GNU tools are so frigging criptic and very user unfriendly
