Could this morphing use those, or are they proprietary and need to be licenced? If they're not I guess most apps would take a performance hit from not being able to use them?

  12. I for one loved it on Sci-Fi Channel Making Dune Miniseries · · Score: 2

DUNE as you may or may not know is not only a movie, and a book, but a six book series that Frank Herbert wrote. The series is absolutely fantastic. Yeah, books 3 and 4 are kinda slow but 1,2,5 & 6 make up for it.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is Herbert wrote an awesome world and a fantastic story around the planet Dune. I understand Dune the movie got a lot of complaints from movie goers, but that is probably because they couldn't appreciate the wonderful world Herbert had created.

It is a clear case of one of those movies - to really convey the wonder of the story - would have to be 4-5 hours long. But audiences don't sit for that long so Lynch had to do the best he could in the limited screen time. If I had never read the book I would probably think it sucked too.

As it is, I read the book, and I think the movie is a fantastic visualization of the main parts of one of the most fantastic epic Sci-Fi stories ever written.

  14. Trite - Problem is PC not censorship on Dying Babies and The Myth of American Freedom · · Score: 1

This article is really very trite. The author mistakes our freedom to exercise some of our freedoms as censorship and a reduction of our freedom of speech.

The reaction to the exhibits at the New York Museum of Art is not censorship, but people exercising their right to choose. The majority of people either are offended or do not want their children viewing the exhibits. So they have taken the point that the city of New York (ie New York taxpayers) do not want to pay for that exhibit. This is not censorship, this our freedom to choose. The artists are perfectly free to take their outrageous exhibits to the streets and show them for free. It's just that the people of New York don't want to pay (ie sponsor) them.

The same with Gov Ventura. His remarks also offended me. The people calling for his resignation are simply exercising their right to demonstrate that this man no longer speeks for them. This is not censorship.

The real problem with our society is not censorship, but in a way it is censorship. We are not censoring our public exhibits and public officials, we are saying I don't want to pay for this, I don't want to support this, this does not represent me, this man does not speak for me. The real censorship is society's backlash against those of us who stand up and protest that these are not things I want to support.

I do not like gay people. I do not have to like gay people. I do not want to sponsor or support gay marriages. I don't vote for politicians that do support gay marriages.

Now lots of people would attack those statements and say that I was trying to oppress gay people. That I was trying to "censor" them. No, I'm not. But I am making it clear that I disapprove of them and I myself do not want to support them in any way. This is our freedom to choose. I am excercising my freedom to choose what I do and do not support.

Just because someone does not like something and takes steps to see that something is not in any way being supported by them does not mean they are censoring it. You can go down on the street corner on your own dime and spout whatever crap you want. If I try and shut you up then, that's censorship.

  17. I hope this is an honest mistake on Corel Linux Beta License Violates GPL · · Score: 1

I really hope this is an honest mistake. I feel very strongly that the distro companies must be watched very carefully. I'm sure it is very tempting for some of them to try and take advantage of the OpenSource movement to make huge profit plays, but this is not the way.

Corel has done a lot for the OpenSource movement lately. In addition to starting a new distro, their contribution of time and energy to the WINE project in invaluable. It would be a shame to wreck that working relationship because we have to boycott them for not respecting the GPL.

If Corel sticks to this I for one will boycott all their products and I hope those in the know are able to take legal action. But, more than that, I hope this is an honest mistake which Corel will remedy quickly.

  19. Re:Version Numbers on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 1

Mandrake originally started out as an improvement (IMHO) upon Red Hat's releases. The version numbers mirrored which exact version of Red Hat's Linux the version was made from.

For example, Linux Mandrake 5.2 was a copy of Red Hat Linux 5.2 with various modifications (KDE etc.). This version number scheme made it very easy to take advantage of existing Red Hat resources. If you saw something on the web (tip, trick, fix, etc) for Red Hat 5.2 you could be 99% sure it would work on Mandrake 5.2.

Once the new 2.2 kernel came out Mandrake started to diverge from Red Hat's distro. Mandrake 5.3 for instance was Red Hat 5.2 with the new 2.2 kernel and the regular Mandrake additions (KDE etc).

Since that time Mandrake has diverged its previous history of starting with a base Red Hat installation. Mandrake now starts with their own base (which is still Red Hat compatible) but no longer matches Red Hat exactly. The version numbers now do not refer to Red Hat versions as they used to, but they have not renumbered from 1.0 as this would be very confusing for all the Mandrake users of previous versions.

    Hope that clears things up.

    Cheers!

  20. You have a point, but... on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 3

You have a valid point. I too would feel more comfortable with a non-pre kernel. The problem is that there is no way to know how long it will be until 2.2.13 comes out. Were are on pre-9 already.

And going back to the last stable kernel 2.2.12 really isn't a good idea either. 2.2.12 (and 2.2.11) was riddled with wide spread problems. I respect Mandrake for trying to stay on the cutting edge as well as ensuring that their distributions are stable.

Please remember, 2.2.13-pre3 has been out for a while and we have been hammering it pretty hard to make sure it is stable. And, of course, as soon as 2.2.13 finally is released it won't be long before Mandrake release a small update package.

It's not that I disagree with your observations, I just don't think the issue is so big as to scare someone off from a much improved distro release.

    Cheers!

  21. Re:redhat based on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 2

Mandrake is not as RedHat based as it used to be. Mandrake has tried very hard to make sure it remains 100% redhat compatible though. All programs that are designed and compiled to run with RedHat should work without any problems on Mandrake. Mandrake has split off from RedHat in a few respects, most notably the look and feel (which it has been for a long time), now the install routine has been GUI-ified, and the kernel and underlying driver sets have been hand tuned and optimized.

I have personally found the Mandrake distribution to be RedHat but better. That's just my opinion of course. I think whereas RedHat spends more time in the marketting of their Linux, Mandrake spends the time in making their Linux better and easier to use for the common user.

    Cheers!

  22. Big Improvement on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 4

I've been following the development of Mandrake's latest release from 6.0 to 6.1 very closely. I strongly encourage anyone running an older version of Mandrake to upgrade.

There are major changes in this release which are very much worth taking advantage of. Most people will enjoy the new graphical installer and graphical disk partitioner. These things make it nicer for the average user to install. But more importantly than that, 6.1 is the first release benefitting from Mandrake's "cooker" process.

Mandrake 6.0, while being very good, was chock full of small annoying and disruptive problems. After the experience with 6.0, Mandrake opened it's development process up to the public. Thos of us who have chosen to participate have been able to download and intall development versions of 6.1 and make suggestions for improvements.

This means that 6.1 has the inputs and suggestions of far more people than any previous release. Hopefully we have all found the "gotcha" issues before the official release this time. I am confident that the 6.1 release is far more stable and gotcha-free than the 6.0 release.

Once again, I enourage all Mandrake (or KDE based distribution) enthusiast to give the new distribution a try.

    Cheers!
