  1. Monash University on Ask Slashdot: Linux Support In Universities? · · Score: 1

Support for linux is reasonably at my uni (Monash). They even have instructions for connecting to their wireless networks under linux. Unfortunately, Meego (which is what I run on the netbook I take to uni) doesn't seem to want to play nice with the TTLS system that they use. A few gripes though: 1) If I want to hand in essays they have to be in .doc or .docx format. Thankfully I don't have to write many (maths major), but it would be nice to see ODF formats added to the lists of acceptable file formats. There are plugins for word that would make this trivial to fix. 2) All the computer labs claim to have both Windows XP and Scientific Linux, but the few times I've booted into Scientific Linux it hasn't worked. Why even bother advertising it?

I have a feeling that idea came from the wonderful little show that rev3 produced during its infancy, The Broken. Back when Rev3 was tiny, they had The Broken which was Kevin Rose and Dan Huard doing stupid stuff with computers basically. In one episode their hacker friend Ramzi made a thermite based hard drive self destruct button on his laptop. It's a great show, so go watch it if you're in the mood. http://revision3.com/thebroken

I think I read that only 10% of undersea cable capacity was/is being used. Can't get you a source, but I remember reading it when I got off on a tangent after the last undersea cable damage.

I suspect it's not AAPT. They kind of just started offering this service. It would have been easier for them to just not offer it in the first place.

  7. 15GB 512K ADSL on Typical Home Bandwidth Usage? · · Score: 2, Interesting

We have four people sharing our network, although only two of us really use the net for much more than surfing. Even with 15GB this is the first month since we got this plan where it looks like we wont be going over the limit (our month ends on the 18th). Would move to ADSL2+ which I can get with my ISP for the exact same price as I pay now and with 20GB of data, but because the company that provides the ADSL have really shitty prices compared to the company who my ISP gets its ADSL2+ off in order to switch to ADSL2+ I would have to downgrade to 56K and then upgrade to ADSL2+ which is apparently a nightmare and could leave me without internet for up to 3 weeks, which is something I cant live with. Understandably I'm annoyed, but there isn't much I can do until my ISP implements a simple changeover (which has been 'just around the corner' for years apparently). I'm in Australia BTW.
