I know this has nothing to do w/ anything. But i've seen things on tv (i know it's the root of all evil but...). Where they recomend, in order to establish good credit, once a month buying a pizza on your credit card. Then paying off the bill each month. This way companies see that you have an active credit history, and that you pay your bills ontime. They like this, even though that way they make less money, i dun get it either.
See but it's not actually like reading the 1st chapter. It's more like reading the 4th, and ignoring the 5th and 6th. But now the 1st is coming out, so...it's like opening a book, where the first 3 chapters are blank, but the first one will be ariving by mail in a few weeks, skiping straight ahead to chapter 4, igoring the rest of the book. Arg, I'm confused.
I agree with you whole heartedly. People who want to protect their children from the world and try to give them the illusion of a disney cartoon are going to have problems w/ their children later on in life. My aunt and uncle are born again christians. They both live in a fantasy world, my aunt especially, who believes she has conversations with god, not prayer but actual conversations as she says something and god says something back to her. They tried to bring up their children in a world that doesn't exist. My cousin was married at the age of 19, w/ a 2 year old daughter. Her husband had been married once before and had 3 other children, by two different women. This is what happens when you shelter your children from the world, when they discover it it's a huge shock.
I know lots of people say "well offensive things like pornagraphy shouldn't be protected." Guess what though, some people find the things you hold dear to be offensive. I personally find catholisism to be pattenly offensive. (For the record I am a catholic by birth). The way woman are still prejudiced against to this day, and how people who don't fit their perfect cookie-cutter mold are under the influence of evil, piss me off to no end. But do I want catholisism, or any religion for that matter, out-lawwed? No! They have a right to their beliefs and I have a right to mine. They may be different, they may be the same, but they are not wrong.
I do agree that some people abuse the freedoms granted to them. This is just the way the world is. Some people will take advantage of whatever they can to further their personal status in life. This does NOT mean that the people who do not abuse their rights should be punished, however. Everyone has rights, not just the people you like or agree with.
Whether you like it or not people have a right to pornography. Some might consider slashdot to be offensive, does that mean we shouldn't be allowed to read it? Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean that it shouldn't be protected.
There has been a lot of talk lately on the linux-kernel mailing list about setting up such sites. I really hope that atleast one good site comes out of this. IMHO the most important things are tuning the kernel, apache, and samba, since I'd have to say they are the three most heavilly hit parts of a linux system.
The settings they used for running the benchmarks are proof enough. Sure they could be passed off as extreme ignorance. Also, the simple fact that they had the NT server expertly tuned, and the Linux box tuned in the wrong direction, then claimed that both were tuned to perform at their peak (an outright lie) is proof that they skewed the benchmark against linux. The fact that they used Linux 2.2.2 is also suspicious. That kernel has known problems interacting w/ windows machines on a network. Later kernels were available. Why didn't they use the latest kernel? Not to mention the fact that performing a benchmark on a system which you know nothing about (as evident by their trouble installing a new kernel) is extremely irresponsible. Mindcraft even implies on their page that they will skew benchmarks for you. I forget the exact wording, but they say something to the effect that they will perform benchmarks to get your desired results.
The wugnet article is also irresponsible. They point out that people critisised the fact that the benchmark was sponsored by Microsoft, which IMHO does partially invalidate the test, but they fail to mention the other obvious flaws with the test. The list of things that they did wrong is amazing.
Fortunately the "straight press" (if we can consider ZDNet accurate in anything) picked up on these problems and reported them. Too bad no one outside of the Linux community cares.
I doubt Bill gates could be forced to resign. I think he owns more than 50% of the stock so the way I understand it (which isn't very well) even if every other share holder joined against him, they still couldn't force him out.
Well the mother boards and floppy drives are still very proprietary. The floppy drives cost you about $90 a pop. My school has a number of computers w/ no floppies cuz they refused to pay such an outrageous price for a drive. And if the motherboard dies they just junk the box.
Mozilla doesn't get as much attention because for a long time it was huge, nearly impossible to compile, and if you could get it to compile, you didn't get a working product out of it. Only die hard hackers get into systems like this. Now w/ M4 and possible a beta release coming, this might change. I really hope it does.
Well Linux is free, and it has a bunch of media hype behind it right now. How many of these units do you think they'll sell just because of "linux". The fact that they won't have to pay any royalties will make that deal even sweeter for them. Also, w/ the source to the kernel they can easily remove a lot of the stuff that they don't have any use for.
I don't think this says anythign about the quality of Linux support. They claimed that they asked news groups and sought support. No one has been able to find any proof that they actually made any attempt to get help. Also, the fact that they needed help compiling the kernel, and thought that if you mess the kernel up your system needs to be reinstalled, shows that they obviously know nothing about adminstering a linux server. I think it's more a case of microsoft paying mindcraft to produce a survey that fits their needs. Microsoft has done this in the past and I'm sure they will do it again. I think what we really need is for a nuetral company to rerun the benchmark, this time allowing someone who knows how to configure a linux server to setup the linux box. Let's see how linux does then. Based on the fact that every other survey i've seen shows that linux beats nt hands down, i think that linux would prevale.
Well atleast we know win2000 will still be unstable. A friend of mine threw it on a box at school. I managed to lock it hard while trying to download netscape. Conspiricy theories aside, it had something like 3 windows of ie open and that was it. Hard drived just started chunking when I clicked on the link to download netscape and it kept chunking, after about 5 minutes of chunking w/ no screen redraws I turned the power off (since the dumb compaq boxes my school buys don't have reset buttons). The really funny thing was that while booting it did that same old chkdsk thing, then rebooted after chkdsk completed. I thought win2000 was supposed to eliminate excess reboots. Seems it introduced a new one.
I agree w/ the religous aspect of it. These people apear to want one of four things. A) To make money off of a tragety (If this is the case I think they should both be executed). B) To get vengence for what they believe is the cause of their child's death. C) To punish the morally depraved people who caused their child's death and push their morality (or religion) on the nation. D) some combination of the above.
I really hope A isn't part of the answer. I can't see how B isn't based on their comments. I think C could very easily go hand in hand with B. So my answer would have to be D.
You can't sue the brewery, but you can sue the bar. Bartenders are liable for what the people in the bar do until they get home or some bullshit. Now while I agree that if someone looks drunk the bartender should cut them off, some people can be smashed and have no outward signs. We live in a really stupid world.
I think you are talking about that cop in Callifornia who killed the mayor and someone else because "he looked at me funny". What I remember of the story is that the cop was the cheif of police in some city in CA and he quit his job after the mayor was elected. The mayor was coming down hard on police corruption and this guy was about as corrupt as they came. After quitting some of his pollitical backers got a bit pissed and forced him to go to the mayor to try to get his job back. The mayor said no and the guy got a bit pissed off. He broke into city hall later that night and shot the mayor and then some other elected official (who i believe was gay, that's not really relevant to the story though). He was subsequently arrested. At his trial he used the defense that he was temporarally insane from eating too many twinkies. I think he got of with something like 2 years, which for two cold blooded murders is nothing imho. If any of you have heard the song, I fought the law, by the Dead Kennedys, it's about this exact situation.
You my friend obviously know nothing. First, the guy says he has been programming since the 70s. I think that would qualify him as an expert on computers. I fancy myself an expert and I've only been using them since the early 80s and programming since the early 90s. Second the sysadmin has no need, or right to mess with someone's desktop. Third, incompatibilities with the OS? Since when is Microsoft Office incompatible with windows? I know ms does a shitty job w/ software, but they can atleast get their own products to sort of work together. A lot of schools do have strict rules about what goes on lab machines, but that's because they are public machines. On a professor's computer, as long as everything's legal the sysadmin shouldn't care what the people put on it.
That's nothing, at my old job when I started there were 3 people in the tech department who weren't me. Ross, Mike, and Jim. Then another Jim (the owner's son) started and the old Jim left. Then Stewart started, and Ross left shortly there after. Then Mike quit. At this point I was the senior member of the tech department, at 17 years old. Stewart gave his two weeks shortly there after. Then three new people came in (Jonathan, Zandro, and Doug). Jim (the bosses son) left for college soon, a few weeks later I left to return to school. I heard that Jonathan had left, but I don't know if that's true. All in all it's a huge turn over rate in a 3 month period.
gzip saved 1% for me, bzip2 saved 1.53%. So, download mp3.bz2, save eleven seconds of download time!:) Anyway, I don't think mp3s will be replaced by something with better compression, unless someone comes up with a way to get something that's like 2x as good as gzip or bzip2. It will probally be replaced with something that does better encoding and can figure out how to drop out even more information that the human ear can't hear anyway.
It comes down to copyright law. Regardless of whether source code is speech or not copyright law still applies to the software. You can choice how you want your "speech" used. Pattents and encryption laws would fall out the window as unconstitutional, however. First ammendment only applies to the government, not private citizens. Your boss will still be able to tell you what to do with software written on company time, you can still protect your source code if you wish. The only difference will be that the government won't be able to tell you what to do. IMHO, this is a very good thing.
Freedom of speech is probally the one thing this country has done right. At the time the constitution was written things like pornography and flag burning were not even imagined. The supreme court has decided, and in my mind correctly, that expression also falls under free speech. You may not agree with pornagraphy, but that doesn't mean that it's wrong. Most bathing suits today would be considered pornagraphic by the standards of 100 years ago. Different people have different tastes and those tastes must be protected provided they are not harmful. Kiddie porn is illegal for a good reason, it is psychologically harmful to children. Obscene material is also not protected. Writing a virus is probally simmilar to yelling "Fire!" in a crowded movie theatre. Sure it's speech, but it is not protected. Viruses might be speech, but they are not protected.
I personally believe that the greatest symbol of the ideals of the founders of this country is not the american flag but the american flag burning. Almost no other country would tollerate such a desicration of its national symbol, but a burning flag shows that the rights of an individual to express him/herself are more important than the rights of the nation.
Your comments about making a living aren't relevant if I understand the situation correctly. Books are also considered speech, but you can't copy a book. Copyright law applys to speech, atleast in written form. It can also apply to pictures, and software. Actually I think you can even copyright a speech that you make, I'm not certain on that however.
Also, with regards to hearing, I think freedom of hearing is implied. When you make a speech you can't prosecute people for listening to what you said.
I'm thinking that linux would be a great game OS because game libraries could be partially written as kernel modules, allowing developers to access the hardware directly when they need to sneak every ounce of performance out of game as possible. I wonder how well a kernel level game API would work for linux. Might not really be necisary though, we already have sound, and cd audio. GGI is working on video drivers, which I think incorporates hardware 3d. Joysticks as well, I don't even think windows supports joysticks as beautifully as linux does. I had to go through a really ugly process to get my snes controller working under windows. Under linux it was just insmod joystick ; insmod joy-console js_console=0x278,1. Not pretty, but it worked really easily. The only thing I can think of that a game might need is the ability to play more directly with the FPU or whatever silly instructions might be tossed in with the FPU. Also, with the realtime scheduler, Linux makes a really great gaming OS.
I know this has nothing to do w/ anything. But i've seen things on tv (i know it's the root of all evil but...). read the fucking article. It's good advice too. 777-film *IS* moviefone.

They do put a warning label on it now, something like "caution: contents hot"

I know this is 100% off topic, but are there any SCSI dvd-rams that also support cdrs. I don't care about cdrw, but I need cdr.
