I'm pretty sure that figure was just BS. I'm a Computer Science student at a large University. Even within my department, few of the girls do much game playing. It's absolutely true that female gamers are a fast-growing group, but to say that it is now evenly divided is just silly.

Oohhhh that's not cool. I'm all for using a church because they are graciously willing to donate the space, but it is unnacceptable to have any sort of religous message tied in with the voting booths. I suppose they can't be held responsible if it is just part of the wall decoration in that room, though.

  6. Why techies support Gore/Nader on Politics, Endorsements And Privacy · · Score: 1

I find it amusing that the techies (and /. ) seem to support Gore. But, in general, scientists and techies have tended to side with the democrats or communists (no slam here) rather than more conservative groups Techies and scientists tend to be thoughtful, intelligent people. Thoughtful, intelligent people are offended by the Republican party, both as a moral watchdog organization and for helping the rich and powerful become more so.

Excuse my ignorance, all. Why do we all hate Katz again? I'm fairly new to /. and I see that everyone complains a lot about him. As far as I can tell his posts are at least interesting. I'd rather he was posting than not. Another dumb question: I assume he is a completely seperate person from the John Katz of stand-up comedy and cartoon Dr. Katz fame?

School shootings involve geek loners that bottle up violence for years and years until it all explodes. School violence in general is perpetrated on a daily basis on these geek loners by football players that do feel like they belong. Violent behavior is promoted and glorified toour kids, not only by TV, movies, and games, but by parents and teachers. Anyone who's ever been involved in a football practice knows the sort of violence and rage being pumped into these kids' minds.

I'm not sure what school you were at that had people jumping on the CS bandwagon... The reason for the IT shortage is that CS is a hard major, and most Americans are too lazy, short-sighted, or stupid to handle it. We in Europe do sex and we're having a good time. I came across the strangest, most surprising thing in a recent human sexuality class; Americans have more sex (times per week) than any other country in the world. I couldn't believe it. The only country that was anywhere near the US on the chart was Sweden. The big prudes? England and Japan. Huh?! So we are such an incredible bunch of hypocrites. While we outwardly deplore sex in all forms in public, we are the most debaucherouse in the entire world! Maybe we just have more free time than most? Can someone explain this to me? If anyone is interested, it came out to about 3 times a week for average Americans.
