When I did, not only didn't they raise an eyebrow when I asked if we could purchase Rational Rose (the package I was trained in), they didn't even read my reasoning. They just asked what it was for - "it's a bit like making floor-plans for ..." was as far as I got.

I even, and I kid you not, got scolded for not having set aside enough time to document the software I was making. They weren't interested in "out the door quickly" - they wanted "out the door correctly". They wanted the documentation as *gasp* part of the sales pitch. Not all of it, just the bits that would be relevant for our clients' IT department. And they wanted the documentation for the same reasons that they still had the electrical schematics for houses and office buildings they had helped design in the 60's.

And it's rather reassuring to work in a place, where even the secretary understands basic security and will ask questions like "What company do you work for again?" to some bloke claiming to be from the ISP and then not only call the ISP and ask them to describe the technician before letting him in AND insist that someone keep an eye on him while he's running some new cable inside the wall.

There are of course drivers who will speed up to get past me on my bike and then make the turn in front of me, forcing me to more or less jump on my brake to avoid smashing into them. And all they get out of it is getting to their destination maybe 10 seconds faster than slowing down.

Or the idiots who thinks it's necessary to switch from short to long beams in the middle of the night, just because there's a bike going the other way. I've lost count of the number of times fuckers like that have completely blinded me. Did I mention that I quite enjoy riding in the middle of the night?

And I'm sure I won't be scaring off animals either. And it's not like bird song or the wind in the trees is anywhere near as calming as the constant roar of an engine pumping out 100 dB of noise. Nor does it smell anywhere near as nice as when you've stopped in the middle of nowhere to enjoy the view - I mean, what is the point of smelling wild flowers and raw nature when you could be smelling burned oil, gasoline and hot rubber

What next - will people recommend that I buy a nice off road car instead of running shoes? What is the obsession with having everything engine powered? If I am completely broke, I can still take my bike out for a ride - even if it has electrical assist. I can only do that with a motorcycle or car until it runs out.

Compared to sitting on a scooter/motorcycle, you'll get exercise on an electrical bicycle. Especially as they mostly come with electrical assist and don't just run on their own.

That was my point. Even if it only means you'll get 25% of the workout you'll get on a regular bike, that's still a lot more calories burned than you'll get by just sitting on the scooter.

And I don't know it's "meant for the elderly". Would I want the bike from Sanyo? No, I wouldn't - it doesn't fit my needs. Would I like electrical assist on my mountain bike? Yes, I would. Quite a lot of the hills around here are steep enough that I can't climb them on my own. Quite a lot of them are step enough that I can climb them for about ... 200 meters at a time before dying.

The electrical assist would allow me much greater freedom in my exercise and excursions. Instead of being limited to taking a short 10 km run, I could do 20 or 30 km and get pretty much the same calorie burn.

The road in question has about 30 cm of shoulder before becoming a rather steep hill ending in a lake, and at the time there was very heavy traffic in the oncoming direction.

I look over my shoulder an notice the truck about three seconds behind me and a driver who was very obvious in looking at me and the road. Not angry or annoyed, just very very attentive. When the traffic finally allowed him to overtake, he seemed to fall back further before pulling completely into the opposite lane in what seemed like an attempt to keep from knocking me over with the turbulence.

As some people have pointed out, most of the things you mention aren't problems. Loss of speed, straightness of barrel etc. Plus, as they say, you get to aim for different orbits in one platform

One thing they didn't point out which is significant: Logistics.

You go ahead and bring huge supply train up the side of Mauna Kea - I'm sure none of the neighbours will mind. As someone else pointed out, I'm sure they wont mind when something goes tits up and you send shrapnel towards them at a km/s.

Logistics are a killer though. With an ocean platform, you already have your base on the harbour. You have plenty water for all types of uses, like desalinate for drinking, use in flushing, cooling etc., and you only have to make sure your installations are protected against sea water. If you need a big housing base for staff etc. you can float in every thing you need by buying a small cruise ship. Park an oil tanker next to it for fuel and gas needs and retrofit it for ship to ship refuelling.

Compare all those advantages to the minor inconvenience of losing a small bit of initial velocities, and you end up with a massive conclusion of ocean based vs nailed to the side of a mountain.

And how do you do that?

You can't expect Fox News to prop up that idea like they did with the teabaggers. Same with CNN, MSNBC, and all the others.
