I agree. Some time ago my mom had a US Robotics 56k Modem and her Connection was terrible. My lil sister wasnt even able to chat properly. When i got ISDN i gave my mom my obsolete Elsa Modem and got some shiny new drivers for it. Then i optimized the packetsize and changed her ISP. Result: My mom hates me, for her phonebill skyrocketed since my sister keeps napstering all day ;-)

its illegal. But i KNOW for sure that it is legal to copy Music to tapes in Germany. And it is legal to share them with "friends" as long as you dont make any profi. 15. Heres where... on Napster Offers $1B For Music-Swapping Rights · · Score: 1

As you might have heard Napster was bought by Bertelsmann. You bet these guys can pay a Billion. But still i dont see why they should pay it for Napster? Napster isnt going to be legal anytime soon because even if people pay for the mp3s and even if the RIAA stops sueing them it will still be the community wich is uploading and compressing the files. So WHY should i pay for sth. that is basicly just a searchengine for mp3s? I could get the files t-e-c-h-n-i-c-a-l-l-y via E-Mail or FTP from a friend. So its all about ripping off the community because the labels dont have to pay ANYTHING but get something. On the other hand: isnt it legal to copy music to tapes or other analog media and share it with my friends? So how do you define friend? Will the Labels tell me who is a friend of mine and who is not?? I DONT THINK SO!!!

  17. I hate to say it... on Are Unix GUIs All Wrong? · · Score: 1

...but what we are basicly talking about is an impossible task that will end up in a totally messed up Operating System. See, ive been watching Linux develope into some sort of Windows lookalike for some time now.

The point is: We can never win with this strategy and frankly most Linux Users dont even want to. Face it, Linux has no need to be easy to use, it already is: Its an OS for people who want to create their own solutions for their specific problems, and if you want to create something it will always be a bit harder than just using an off-the-shelf solution. But it will probably suit your needs better too.

If we keep moving into the Windowslike-GUI direction Linux will be obsolete because Windows is already a great OS for the click&go people. But on the other hand we will loose some of the flexibility as we know it for it turned into the clumsy, halfhearted, GUI-thing that NT already is.

I dont think GUIs are a bad thing but if the community pushes too much effort into GUI-only applications we could loose some of the Linux flavour that we love so much...

  18. The feature that makes a PC such a great machine on Are Unix GUIs All Wrong? · · Score: 1

is that it can be used for nearly every task. Other than a TV or a car you can use it for whatever you want. Its all in the box: gaming, surfing, communication, pron, and flying to the moon. At least thats what brought me into computing. I had that C-64 and i was playing games, one day i started programming the beast and was flattered of all the possibilities. The fact that *nix can be even more flexible is the fact why im using it. I dont use Windows because it IS limiting me in some way. So use your PC the way you want to, ill keep using mine like i always did, AND i like games too.. Argh, this ignorance makes me soo mad... Lispy

There are so many other machines running in a regular office wich could save power and honestly i dont feel comfortable about any power managment technics yet. These things just dont really work! I saw a TV Show lately where they said that the aircondition of the World Trade Center consumes as much energy per day as my hometown (munich/1.9million citizens). There are the real energy-suckers not down at the serverroom... Slightly offtopic: I live in germany and when i heard about the powershortage in California i couldnt believe it.
