  1. Isn't that what RTP (RFC 1889) is all about? on Cross-Platform Internet Telephony? · · Score: 1

RTP (Real-time Transfer Protocol, defined in RFC 1889) was designed exactly because of these problems, as I remember. And RTP specification seems to be from january 1996...
Speak Freely (http://www.speakfreely.org) others have mentioned uses RTP, and probably most other telephony libs/applications. As to UDP, there's nothing preventing people from developing protocols above UDP level, so that shouldn't prevent telephony either.

Hmmh. You are saying outrageous hourly fees are bad, but think of how expensive WAP communication is. It most definitely is much more expensive than ISP + local call fees. In addition, the main attraction for WAP is (thought to be) the _MOBILE_ access. To get that using your 15" screen, your computer needs the mobile access, which for quite some time to come will mean using mobile phone access network. So, I don't see price of computers (PCs) having much anything to do with the success/failure of WAP devices.

Well, without frets it is possible to produce frequencies that are not exactly 'right', ie. Db can be played higher than C# (offset from mathematical value by few hertzes). So, in a way, even though one could claim that'd be out of key, it might actually sound better (or at least feel better, who knows). ... but what do I know, not being a 'real' musician... that's just how my music teacher explained it to me years ago.

If you are collecting Caller IDs of incoming calls (in which case you are part of the communication) that's quite different from snooping IP-numbers n'est pas? Also, in some places (in Europe) lawmakers are quite strict about companies collecting information to databases, and so creating this kind of a black list (not to mention publishing it), so it might well backfire. In ye bad ole US, of course, any company (or individual) is probably free to collect all kinds of black lists for any purpose (to the raise the lynching spirit, for example) . :-)

Usually, when Slashdot readers say anything about copyrights, it's along lines of 'copyrights suck'. But now, suddenly, when it comes to their "own" words, copyrights are somewhat of a must? I would think that writing to Slashdot would be the closest thing to "Open Sourcing" your opinions there is? If you want to keep your text proprietary, you should write a book instead of sending comments to Slashdot.

  8. Re:Benchmarks should not be Open Source on Proposal For Open-Source Benchmarks · · Score: 1

I think this is a variation of 'security-by-obscurity' principle, ie. thinking that hardware vendors not having knowledge about benchmarks prevents them from cheating. That has not been the case so far (that's one major reason why Spec - benchmark suites have been changed over time), and probably won't be in future.

Just a small comment; government != courts, and that's the way it should be according to the classical theory of dividing the power (ie. government has no direct jurisdiction over courts, so that courts remain independent). Thus, it's not the government that is split (may be it is, who knows) based on the court cases.

How about naming this great single individual who single-handedly created everything from web to python? I'd have use for that super-hero!

Even without reading the statement without malicious intent, I seem to recall 2 names from C bible; there are N+1 databases of which few were created by single person, web certainly wasn't created by just one man/woman (not even the browsers much less WWW itself). Linux in its current form hardly was created by Linux alone. List goes on.
