  1. Re:preprogrammed phones for kids? on Kids with Cell Phones, How Young is Too Young? · · Score: 1

    call collect.

i had a car that was very unreliable. i relied on my insticts when the car broke down. sometimes i had to walk a little ways to get a pay phone, but i used it. i always kept change in my car for this purpose. one of the rules of going out was to keep a few quarters on me in case i needed a pay phone. it's called responsibility. never spend your emergency quarter on a can of coke. and when i had to call collect, i did.

i was on a sports team in high school. i went to high school 45 min from my home. i relied on carpooling with friends and their parents when i needed a ride. occasionally, i couldn't get one. i had to call mom or dad to pick me up. i'd use the pay phone in the school to call them collect. when it asked for my name (since by then they used an automated system with a recording), i just said "mom i need a ride" and she knew. we had codes. dial, hang up after 2 rings. dial again, hang up after 3 rings. that was the code that i needed a ride. things like that. there are pay phones everywhere people gather or people might be waiting.

my car broke down down the street from a movie theatre. i walked there, called mom, and walked back to my car. it broke down on an exit ramp (of course this was the middle of nowhere), so i walked down the exit ramp, saw a commuter lot, called from the pay phone there (which wasn't working properly). then i took a ride with a nice guy who offered me a lift to a gas station down the street (where there was civilization) and he left me there so i could use the pay phone there. got picked up by a parent there.

now-a-days, you almost never have to worry. there are people all over the place with cell phones. i can't tell you how many people stopped and offered help when my car broke down, or offered their cell phones... the only time it sucks is when you're really in the middle of nowhere, but then you probably don't have cell reception anyways, so it won't do any good.

kids don't need cell phones. my rule for them will be that they need to be able to pay for it themselves and if they can prove that they can, i'll let them get one. and if they show they can be responsible and might need help every now and then (didn't get enough hours at work one week), i'll help them out, but not if they prove they aren't responsible enough to pay it themselves. hell, i'll buy my teenager one of those kids phones that can only dial certain numbers.

norton is a bigger joke than the others though. i do tech support for students for a living (ok, more than just students, but i am more hands on with them). i have found in my experience that norton misses a lot of viruses mcafee picks up and mcafee tends to do the better job of the 2. mcafee also seems a bit lighter on resources and doesn't stick its nose everywhere. i can't tell you how many mucked up network stacks i've seen because of norton's personal firewall program. once it's uninstalled the networking magically works. go figure. even disabling it does nothing.

so yes, norton is a joke and i would not recommend anyone purchase anything from symantec until they get their act together.

that being said, this is simply a mistake. it happens. mcafee had one that detected excel.exe as a virus.

does the mac allow blank passwords or are you required to have one? my guess is that the more people with blank passwords, the more likely it'll be they'll have problems.

the funny thing is, i've been running windows for years and the only time i got a virus was in 97 or 98 when anti-virus software use wasn't as widespread (i had it, but they didn't update defs as often then). i got the elvira virus, it was pretty neat, but luckily, it wasn't the bad version where it wiped your C drive. a floppy disk i used in a computer lab or borrowed from a group member must have been infected. since then, i have never had a virus or spyware infection. it's called smart computing. the more lusers start using macs, the more problems we'll see with them. just like with firefox/IE. the more people use firefox, the more vulnerabilities will be exploited.

not all cops are like this. i have met some nice ones. but the minute a cop over-steps the law and makes himself above it, he's no better than one of the typical corrupt dirty cops. the cops in the article had no right to do what they did. they came to search the home without a warrant and they were asked to leave. by law, they are required to leave or it becomes harrassment. it was private property, the guy had every right to have security cameras installed. he did not commit a felony, but the dirty cops in the story were pissed that he recorded them over-stepping their boundaries and didn't want to face disciplinary action. it's coming though.

teenie boppers don't shell out $500 for front row tickets. their yuppie parents do.

and it is not bullshit to assume that this will cause all concerts to be that expensive. who's to say that they won't be successful with this method and then all of a sudden they decide to auction off every seat in the house? almost all concerts are popular to someone. and what difference does it make if they auction off all the tickets to an unpopular concert with the starting bid being the original face value? at the worst, they get face value for all tickets, which is what they'd make if they didn't auction. at best, they'd get a whole lot more.

and this doesn't put that money into the artists hands. ticketmaster is auctioning them off, not the artist. some artists simply do not want their fans to have to pay top dollar to see them. in fact, many of the more popular touring groups charge a flat rate for tickets, front row being the same price as the worst seats in the house (phish, used to be this way when they existed, selling out every concert they put on from 1995 through their breakup in 2004).
