I tolerate Apple banishing flash. I love it, because I had to use flash on a non-windows environment. It sucks. On a C2D2 mac laptop, it consumes about 80-90% CPU on some (if not most) non video flash apps. It makes the battery die faster. It makes the whole laptop run very hot. I don't want developers to feel comfortable developing for the lowest denominator (flash) that has demonstrated that sucks.
have you seen flash on nexus one? search on youtube. then realize that your rant about flash being shit on non-windows is pure bs. for the macbook getting too hot, some guys tested the i7 mac laptop. they benchmarked the cpu and during the benchmark the laptop reached 100C. not kidding. what this says to me is that mac laptops are poorly designed pieces of shit that are put together only to look good on the outside. not to utilize the hardware for which you paid 2x the money.

On the other hand, you have Apple's devices which are closed and highly restricted. It requires a jailbreaking to get what an Android device comes with naturally (ability to sideload, use the underlying OS to its full potential, etc.)

the sad thing is people simply, utterly don't care about any of the things you/me care about. seriously i've seen it. people just accept their fate and continue. if this iphone/pad success continues for a year more i'm afraid alternatives like n900 won't exist. even mac laptops are horribly unintutive and lack basic features like mouse buttons. and scrolling areas on the touchpad. still they get rave reviews everytime they are updated to a new cpu/gpu that every other laptop has been offering for the last 6 months. my lenovo thinkpad has two sets of mouse buttons a pointing button and scrolling areas on the touch pad. and programmable zones on the touch pad and you can enable multi touch scrolling, zooming if you want. but when i explained this to my friend as an advantage over macbook he just shrugged off and said he does not need any of that shit. people just care about shiny and hip and right now all apple shit is the in thing. similarly i used a friend's iphone recently. he was all smiles and smiled in pity seeing my e71. anyway i sort of played with it for a couple of hours or so. what annoyed me to no end was the fucking auto rotate. its too sensitive and just keeps jumping around when i browse through music or photos. i though no problem i'll just turn it off. but surprise, surprise!!! the steve jobs think auto rotate AWESOME! nobody needs manual control. its fucking amazing the kind of things iphone lusers are forced fed by jobs and his ilk and still praise about the products. and wtf is up with wlan on iphone??? how can you USE it instead of the ultra-expensive hspa??
nokia is no patent squatter. they literally made the tech all phones and lots of exchanges and servers use. this episode shows us that the patent system is not yet totally broken. that there exists a case where it can be used for a just purpose.

It could be a lot worse for Nokia if Apple is able to prove that the licensing fees Nokia requested from Apple for essential GSM patents turns out to be unreasonable. Nokia does hold GSM patents, which as part of a standard are required to be licensed under "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory" terms. If Apple can prove that Nokia requested unreasonable terms from Apple for the GSM patents, Nokia may be in trouble with the ETSI.
If anything good comes out of this for future patent encumbered standards, it could be that the courts may be left to define what fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory actually means. As Engadget states in their coverage:

It would be nice if these cases were looked at as clear reason why we really need patent reform, but I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.
imo, this is the ONLY case in recent years that show how important patents really are and need no reform in this area. nokia (along with others like siemens, ericsson, etc) has spent billions of dollars into developing the technology that goes into your cellphone, whatever brand it is. if you want to use that tech and sell it to make a profit, you need to pay nokia. that sounds pretty fair to me. and you have to pay whatever they ask. if they ask too much, go use other tech like cdma. its not technically inferior or anything and is quite widely deployed.
to fix the wlan random disconnections, i have to reboot completely. not just toggling the wlan switch or logging out. and to fix the 'plugged in, not charging' thing i have to shut down and take out the battery. then boot with only ac connected and then log in and wait for power management programs to load. then shut down. remove the ac supply. put in the battery and plug in the ac and then turn on again. yes, i need to reboot two times. and then there was this bsod problem which is gone now. random bsods on boot. so system restore kicks in and overwrites all my files (even data and games!) changed since last successful boot. i swear i nearly went mad uninstalling EACH and EVERY driver and reinstalling them but no success. finally i gave up and called hp. they simply told me to reinstall windows and lose every config, program and data. thankfully that fixed the problem. my vista also takes 25-30 seconds after passsword entry to be usable. don't you think that is a bit long?? ubuntu's total boot up time is about 30-35 seconds including the bios. win7 boot time is also similar to linux. the bottom line is that i feel totally frustrated and ripped off.
never thought about it like that! it is quite logical. but i've never seen this in any formal writing like newspapers, novels, etc. it is always without an apostrophe as far as i remember. thanks anyway for a new perspective.
I'm surprised you find Ubuntu with "jerky audio" and "crappy webcam" is better than Vista - all of those work out of the box on Vista laptops. Then again, it seems invoking "m$" is still worth a +1, Insightful around here.

it is not my job to get vista working if i paid to get it pre-installed. i've gotten ubuntu to work after a lot of work to find the correct nvidia drivers. the other things like fingerprint, motion sensor, etc don't work because hp did not create drivers. this is why i said ubuntu is better. because it does everything it is designed to do. for example, in the time it takes vista to hibernate and come back, ubuntu can shut down completely and comeback THREE TIMES. vista on the other hand loses wlan connections randomly, stops charging the battery and mysteriously turns itself off randomly. i'd take crappy audio over any of that. and i think 'm$' is the the most wonderfully accurate/succinct description of micro$oft ever.
