Harlan Ellison is well known for spitting venom. I see why he's mad, but would understand it better if, say, people were printing copies of his
books and selling them. As it is, I doubt he's being harmed any more than a music artist is harmed by bootleg tapes.
So a little theft is OK? I'm sorry if you take a story someone else wrote and put it online without the OK of the author it is theft, it does not matter if the damages are one dollar or one million dollars its still theft and its still *WRONG*. Why is this a hard concept?
Um Harlan knew Heinlein and Asamov and a lot of the other of the first generation SF authors. And had been a SF writer for more than 40 years. Folks selling books and stories is how Harlan Elison pays his bills. THIS IS HIS SOURCE OF INCOME. By downloading his works of the net instead of buying to book you are taking money out of his pocket. This is theft pure and simple.
I disagree, artistic work can benefit the public while still under copyright. Many books published in the last 60 years whice are udner copyright have greatly influenced how we see our world. Harlan is right. If everytime someone publishes a book or story it is pirated instantly no one will ever publish anything. Why should I write a novel if I am not going to get any benifit from it? Why should publishers print books if 3 days latter its going to apear on alt.binaries.e-books for any yahoo with a palm to download for free. And lets face it folks most paperbacks cost under $10.00 and if you can't afford it go to the damn library or buy it used.
After the French revolution all copyright laws were eliminated. Within about a year the only books being published were pornography because anything else would be reprinted by the guy down the street within a few days. They had to restore copyrights after a few years because not having them was a dismal failure.
I remember a bit in one of the Tom Clancy books in which Jack Ryan tell his wife that CNN often knows stuff faster than the CIA. I belive its probably true at least for some types of things. And I would bet hevily that in places like CIA and the Petagon that TV's tuned to CNN are rather common.
Probably a few tens of thousands are what CIA is interested in. I'm sure that at CIA or NSA there is a room of people listening in to the BBC World Service and Radio Moscow, CNN etc. Lets face it the CIA does not have agents anywhere and much of what you can get off of the public wire is good information.
Plus you can also find out what world leaders are thinking by reading the newspapers in a country and listening to the national radio station. I would imagine that something like a Tivo would make this much easer for them.
Well the problem is that for many of us who live outside a major population area if you want to get anywhere you have to drive. I can't take the bus to work or the store, there isn't one. (There are a few busses here in Nashua NH but they don't really go anywhere usefull, like my flat.)
And it would not make sense to put busses in because there are not enough people to ride them.
They can be it depends on which state you live in and how it is worded. They can not prevent you from earning a living. What you really need to do is talk to a lawyer because it depends a lot on how it was worded.
They can prevent you from taking information you got inside the company (trade secrets etc) and using them else where.
Well I would not, say you want to write a KDE or Windows or GNOME or whatever front end in a client server system. If you wrote the backend in Java it makes a lot of sense to write the frontend in Java as well.
While the Idea of Write Once Run anywhere (Or Write Once Debug everywhere) is really nice in a lot of cases you know that infact you will be using say Linux as the frontend and a specific server as the backend and all you need to do is get it to work in that context. It really depends on what you are trying to do.
And have no idea what method of encryption was used and what the "plain text" should look like you may have a very tough time. It may even be imposible as when you do decrypt it you may not even know depending on the data.
Many things like the number stations on short wave will probably never be decrypted for that very reason, ofcourse in that case there may not be any data at all it could just be random numbers most of the time.

No what you do is get a very long noodle, you put a Rabbi on one end and touch the other end with a bit of pork or shrimp, I believe Tryef is in fact faster than light. So now you have a faster than light signaling system.
How you streach a noodle from Earth to Mars is left as an exercize for the reader.
I would not worry about the band of EM causing them harm. You are going to be sending microwaves or radio waves. These are so low energy that they can not break up any molicule. If they could it would be destroyed very quicly by other things.
Mass has the same law, but the Kosher grocery stores can sell wine on sunday, mostly because they are not open on Sat.
Personaly I would not live anywhere without a Jewish community. Its just to hard to train folks in places without many Jews that no they can't call me on Friday Night/Saturday.
You can't get up and say that this tool does not break into people's system, the users do. There seems to be a trend (As in Napster) where a tool is written to do something and they deny that the tool is doing it.
It just does not wash. And boy am I gald I'm running Linux.
Well it is science in that she came up with an idea that was testable, then tested it. That is the core idea of science. For a 9 year old it was quite an impresive bit of work.
Science does not prove anything, it comes up with a hypothosis and then looks for ways to show it is wrong.
I see no problem with a teacher requiring students to write papaers on a specific theme. Or on books on a specific theme. I think that High school students need to be exposed to the ideas of the Holocost, and if you graduate without reading one of Night, Maus, Diary of Ann Franke or something similar someone has fallen down on the job.
If you have not read Maus by Arthur Spiegelman do so now! And yes it is disturbing, and it should be.
It said she polled 30 addults and children. Not a huge statistical sample to be sure, but large enough to gather some results. Ok maybe the numbers would have been different had she chosen to sample 100 adults, or a more diverse group of people but she's 9, give her a break.
This girl should be commended, She performed a real scientific experiment, she came up with a hypothosis and figured out an inovative way to test it. She then documented her findings.
It is my understanding that most Science fair experiments are rather dull and pointless.
Well for Redhat et al Open Source is about trade, but it may not be for you. As for your example Red Hat does have a trademark on the term Red Hat at least as it relates to computer OS's.
You can't sell a CD and call it Red Hat Linux. And you can't sell a CD and call it "Red Hat BSD". Now you can create a BSD distro based around RPM and other free software written by Red Hat.
The basic idea of Trademarks is that when you see a product with a given name or logo you should know that it comes from the people you expect it to. If I go to the store and buy a Red Hat CD I can have confidence it is from Red Hat and not some guy who was burning CD's as a hobby. Similarly when I go to the store and buy a bottle of Pepsi I can know that what I am getting is really Pepsi.
Well in the synagoge we read from a hand written Torah that was created by a scribe. To be kosher a Torah must be written without error with a quill from a bird (usualy a goose I think). As well as a specific ink. It takes a scribe about a year to write out a Torah.
A Saffer Torah is given special treatment. It is adorned witha velvet cover and a silver crown etc. A Torah is escorted threw the congragation by a procession. When it is no longer in usable condition it buried or otherwise properly stored.
Now there are printed books that contain the text of the Torah ofcourse, we use those for study. They often contain commentary by RASHI or one of the other Rabbis.
To my mind the laws of the Torah (All 613 of them) adapt to the modern world very well. In some cases I think the laws as written in the Torah do a lot better than the current practice in many parts of the world.
Damn near imposible to do stuff like this at anything but super cold temps, there is just to much thermal energy in room temperature air (or anything else) which knocks stuff out of whack.
How technical are the students in your class. If they know Linux or Solaris you will want to talk about how BSD is different from Linux, if they only know Windows you will want to talk about very different things.
You need to tailor what you say to your audience. I would write an outline up and go over it in advance with your teacher, he or she can give you a good sense of if what you are saying is about at the correct level. A teacher will also be able to help you figure out how much material you need for a 75 min talk (A lot really) and probably be a very big help.
Good luck with this, learning to get up infront of people and talk about stuff is a wonderful skill to have. When you are done post an outline and let us know how it went. You might want to go over it after the fact with your teacher to see what you can learn after the fact about presenting material, it won't be the last time you do it.

Well you are off by a few years there, its 5761 years not 6000 years. And I'm not sure that this exactly follows more's law.
The rather ironic thing is that by Jewish thought Hashem created the world, with a word, the first programing language.
6 days, plus 1 day of rest. :)
