  1. LAMENESS.COM on Cheating Detector from Georgia Tech · · Score: 1

Back in school, a cheesy community college, we had one professor who always used a program called SHERLOCK.EXE to compare two files. She thought this was an infallible method to catch cheaters. We, as a class, chose to mess with her mind one day. We all submitted the same program for a weekly project, but we GREPped the hell out of the program, changing variable names willy nilly and rearranging the procedure calls. Then to add some insult to injury, we added superflous comments here and there. Wahoo, the program did not flag a single instance of "cheating". Sure the include files/libraries were the same, what could she expect? I personally had one include file that contained all the required libraries. The layout was identical for all programs, being a requirement. Wubba wubba. Exactly how many ways can you execute the same algorithm? Gazillions, or 34 to be exact. Just to let you know, we told her about her GREAT program and it's limitations. Bummer for the next class, but my group got decent grades. Yes the program worked per specification. Ho hum.

IBM is great on support. Dell, has been helpful when I needed help, even replacing a front of a server that I dropped a monitor on, for free. I did pay over 3500 buckaroos for this one, so they might as well replace it for free...or risk pissing me off...like Sears, Roebuck and Company did YEARS ago. What evre did happen to Roebuck anyway? We need a poll that can be used to show how the various manufacturers perform servicewise.

I am writing the BattleBots people to put in my two cents worth, and I am close to 50 years old. I will tell them that I will cease and desist watching their show. No big loss. In a more important vein, participants in the Battlebots show should boycott the show for two years. This would bring the Battlebots assholes to their knees and allow time for more complete development of better bots to battle with. I say hit them in their pocketbooks!

  6. Genetic folly? on Can I See Your License for those Plants, Sir? · · Score: 1

One has to make assumptions with this report. Assume the farmer is innocent, or that a SMALL percentage of the Monsanto 'product' is the result of accidental transmission. I can hardly see trucks full of seed driving by and letting the seed fly everywhere. Seed comes in bags for the most part. I can see birds eating the seeds and being unable to digest the seeds, and thereby depositing the seeds elsewhere than where they are licensed. Assume that Monsanto made the seeds/hybrid/engineered fertile and capable of reproduction. (It would be a real bitch for Monsanto to have to grow gazillions of acres of rapeseed(canola) to supply farmers with seeds to use for crop production). Now let us get some wild speculation going here...canola(Canadian Oil) also known as rapeseed, is planted for the oil extracted from the plant. Perhaps the most oil that can be extracted lies in the seed itself. (I know this is pretty far-fetched) Now let us assume that some farmer plants the Monsanto product. How would he/she extract the oil? With corn, the stuff is crushed. Wouldn't crushing the seeds basically destroy them for reproductive uses? I would guess the answer is yes, but how does the next crop spring up? Do the farmers reserve some of their crop for planting next year? Do they pool their seeds in a co-operative manner, or do they harvest their own seeds and store them where no cross contamination can occur? Do they have to relicense their reserved seeds? They are after all second generation, think of it as a software release, first crop REV 1.0, second crop REV 2.0. Do you see how absurd this is getting? What if this farmer is surrounded by others who use and license the Monsanto product? Are they not responsible, as this farmer apparently was held, for allowing Monsanto product to be transferred to unlicensed "users"?

She should be defended as such. If she was paranoid, and the if other student was simply bullshitting(a legal term), then she should have used better judgement. She should be held liable for her actions if they are actionable. Rumor and innuendoe(sp) are no excuse for panic, IMNSHO. Paranoia and fear must be balanced. If this girl was paranoid and felt that many people disliked her to the point of actually hurting her, then she needs counseling. My wife asked me what was going on every few minutes, and I really was at a loss to explain the rational behind the scene. The story should be complete and if we need a narrator, he/she should be there when the scenes cut to parts that do not follow the book. I would not potty train them, not teach them manners, not teach them language, not teach them reasoning skills... ad nauesum. Someone coming to work for me would have to bring his/her own current(as in up-to-date) skill set to get the job. I will not hand hold people who are not prepared for the work place. Cost of doing business my ass. You get some money of your own, then get the loans to start a business, then risk your own money, credit worthiness and your own reputation and start a business of your own. We use a rather standard approach, we offer training at company expense, but require the employee to work for us for a year after the training, at the same performance level. The contract is lengthy, but in essence, if we train you in a field or subject that would benefit us and the employee (making him/her more likely to seek employment elsewhere),the employee will repay the cost of training out of their last paycheck if they fail to remain with us for a year. This year timeframe is a rolling window based upon the last training received. Job performance must not decline. That is to say, we provide you with MSCE training and pay for your expenses, then you deceide to "get out of the contract" by showing poor performance in hope of being terminated and eliminating your responsibility for repayment, well, we have excellent lawyers. This is to protect the investment we have made in our employees. Good employees are the main asset any company has, although some places do not realize this. We are not trying to be mean, it just makes sense to protect company investments. Few people can afford the high cost of training when working at subsistance levels. (These levels are not the result of being poorly paid, but arise from the American problem of not saving enough money.) I am able to save 25 percent of my take home pay, but my co-workers are always broke and going into greater debt on a daily basis. They need new cars, fine clothes, rent their places to live and generally are not fiscally responsible. These folks want instant gratification. But this is a different topic, and I digress...
