Microsoft used to demo Windows 95 (before it came out) on machines that they claimed were 486/33s. At one user group I know of, the crowd restrained the Microsoft stooge while they took the top off the machine, and it was a Pentium 133.
How ironic that Corel is embracing Linux so whole heartedly. Back in 1988, I worked upstairs from Corel, and I applied for a job there. I was told that they didn't hire unix programmers because "they have bad habits that they carry over". I believe that those bad habits included things like not assuming that sizeof(int)==2, writing portable code, and checking return codes.
All these idiot who think this patent applies to downloading music didn't read the patent, just CmdrTaco's bad summary of it. The patent specifically applies to on-line payment and fullfillment of on-demand downloads. It doesn't apply to: - ftp, because you don't pay for it on-line - ISPs, because you pay per hour, not per file. The only thing I could think of that *possibly* could count as prior art would be if you could find a Porn BBS or something where you paid per file you downloaded.
Stop relying on "soundbites" to form your ideas, people - you're *supposed* to be smarter than the average couch potato!
I can think of a *very* good reason they didn't put an MP3 decoder on it: People who listen to stereo headphones while riding tend to end up being washed out of the treads of dumptrucks with a garden hose.
Yeah, but the ones that are here earning $30/hr aren't as big a threat to my livelihood as the ones in Bangalore earning $30/month. I welcome competition against the foreigners who are here, because they have to earn a US standard of living same as me.
As a Canadian working in the US (thank you NAFTA), I can't believe I just said that.
You want to know how commercial software is any better? I'll tell you: - There is one commercial JVM project, Sun's, and it's produced a working JVM. - There are a shitload of Open Source JVM projects, and not one of them has produced a working JVM. Kaffe? Nope, it doesn't work with any of my programs? ElectricalFire? Nope, no java.awt support. Japhar? No, same problem. GCJ? No. CACAO? No.
See, lots of projects, no results. If there were *one* project that all those people were contributing to, maybe there would be a hope in hell of actually producing something.
Another partially done JIT/JVM. Just what the world needs - instead of one open source JIT/JVM that works, we've got 4 or 5, none of which can handle java.awt classes.
This is the biggest problem with open source - everybody wants the ego boost of doing their own project, rather than adding their time and effort to somebody else's project. So you end up with 30 half-assed projects instead of one or two good ones.
Hey, smart guy: do you know that your ISP's connection to the backbone works just like your Ethernet? The more users you have connected, the slower it becomes. But you know what else? When they get more customers, they ADD MORE CAPACITY! DUH!
My cable company has a guaranteed level of service - if they can't meet the guarantee, then they subnet the local neighbourhood (or whatever they call it) until the amount of traffic is what they can handle and still provide the required level.
The case you're thinking of, the girl in question actually reproduced one of James Randi's experiements, and somehow got the write-up in a pretigous medical journal (Lancet?). God knows why a repeat of a previous experiment gets into a medical journal, even if it was done by a 12 year old girl.
I believe that Digital Chart of the World isn't available any more. Does anybody know if its successor (which I believe is called VMap) is out, where I can get it, and if it can be loaded into GRASS?
The patent number for the Microsoft patent that destroys their anti-trust case: 5,794,230

...a "Service Pack 5.2" upgrade. You know SP5.2, it's the one made by RedHat.

Can I take the Pilot out of the splash/shock cover thingy and use it for its normal use when I'm not on my bike?

why am I suddenly reminded of Dilbert's "Cuborg 2000"? "You don't want to get these two hoses mixed up."
This story was up, got nearly 100 comments, and then vanished from Slashdot. Now it's back. Why?
I installed the 3.3.3 rpm a few days ago. Today I noticed my system was really, really, really slow.
Now I see from the web site that 3.3.3.1 fixes that problem. Does anybody have an RPM, or do I have to build it myself?
Always mount a scratch patient.
