  1. Just like the Rio's on Reverse-Engineering The Creative Nomad Jukebox · · Score: 2

The Diamond Rio 300/500/600/800 came with the shittiest software ever. Now the protocol has been hacked for all of them. I'm the author of Riorio, an alternative software for the Rio 500 in windows. It allows you to upload from the Rio to the computer (fsck the RIAA) and do all sort of stuff you couldn't do with the standard software.

Guys, I don't think this is that great of a news... Microsoft is now resorting to the tactic of threatning to sue before their legal dept even looks at something. Then if there's bad publicity (ie it's posted on /.), then they withdraw. What if they sue a small person who can't get the word out? Then that person is screwed.

I've used mini-discs for a few months but I got sick of them quickly. Copying is mostly done with analog connections, so copying a 74 minute MD takes 74 minutes... Waste of time, and doesn't encourage keeping your MDs up to date. This is why I switched to the Rio 500. It's got a USB interface, so it only takes a minute or so to copy a CDs worth of music.

Can someone PLEASE compile Mozilla for windoze withh all the debug info taken out? I've tried to compile it, but could never get to the end... I'd love to see how fast it is without any of the debug inof, as well as compiler optimizations turned up. If someone could do that, plz email me with a link. thankx

  12. Blocking Double click on FTC Asks To Regulate Privacy; Doubleclick Hires PR Team · · Score: 1

I think one of the most influential and EASY ways to protest against this en masse is to simply block Double Click ads. I personally use InterMute at home (excellent product), but there's many other programs to use. If we start using programs that block ads from Double Click, and other questionable enterprises, their ads will be shown less. Then they'll have to adapt to suit US, or simply vanish and make way to companies with more decent services.

I mean, come on people. Instead of bitching about here on /., filter out double click. Even my parents, who know very little about computers and the internet, are scared about online privacy. Teach everyone you know to use these filtering programs. If you're a sysadmin, then point all users to such a program, and give them instructions on how to use it.

  13. No $$$ left on Corel - Inprise/Borland Merger Off · · Score: 1

Corel had to register here with the FTC a couple of weeks ago, saying that if the deal with Borland/Inprise fails then they'll run out of cash in 3 months (ie about 2 months now). Of course the media in Ottawa here caught on like crazy, but upper management sent emails to all employees saying don't worry, that's only if the deal falls but it won't. Now that the deal fell, they'll loose even more of their hardcore coders, the ones they need the most... I predict the stock will tank again big time, till different parts (Corel Draw, Linux division) get bought. It's too bad, because I knew a lot of people working there. They value their employees, and treat them very nice. A lot of smart people. Dumb upper management though.

  14. For their own good? on Network Solutions "Owns" Your Domain Name! · · Score: 3

Right now I'm in a very weird situation. I've registered my lastname.com. Then this small company in US (I'm in Canada) have emailed me saying that it should be theirs. Of course I replied saying no way. I also don't want to ask for $$, because I'm afraid they can use that against me later. The only thing that worries me is that NS and this company are both in the US, so can they go straight to each other and transfer it? Would I then have to pay my own legal fees and go down the border to haggle for it? Shouldn't have picked NS dammit, but if I didn't I'm might have been too late!

  15. Hardware ID? Why?? on Dreadling Released · · Score: 1

From the website, it says that the full version won't work on the palm e or the visor, because this game needs hardware ID. Why is it needed? To stop people from beaming this game to each other? What if people just email the game right after they buy it, then it'd be just as easy to transfer...
