  1. Some useful tools. on Complex Network Design Tools? · · Score: 3, Informative

    The whiteboard.

A good knowledge of networking protocols, etc.

The hardcore network engineer doesn't need diagrams - sh ip route, sh ip bgp, sh ip ospf, sh cdp neigh, sh arp, sh cam dyn, etc. (in Cisco-speak; there are equivalents for other vendors) are enough to visualize/plan/troubleshoot, quite frankly.

  2. Trans-atmospheric flight is stupid. on DARPA Looking into Hypersonic Bombers · · Score: 1

It's a hell of a lot easier to a) go straight up, go ballistic (think FOBS, Fractional Orbital Bombardment System), come back down, or b) put your stuff in orbit to begin with and then launch/release as needed (Thor = 'smart crowbars', kinetic-kill metal rods with no need for warheads; Thoth = missiles already on orbit, ready to be called down at a moment's notice) than to build a frigging -airplane- out of materials which don't exist yet to slog through all that air (and heat) to and from the release-point.

Stupid idea, old thinking. Much easier to punch -up- though 100 miles of atmosphere, then punch back -down- through 100 miles of atmosphere, rather than -across- thousands of miles of the stuff.

  5. Characterize your traffic, then apply rules. on Managing Bandwidth and Bandwidth Costs? · · Score: 2, Informative

First of all, you need to know what's normal for your network, and how your bandwidth is actually being used:

    http://www.linuxgeek.org/netflow-howto.php

    http://wwwstats.net.wisc.edu/

    http://www.arbornetworks.com/products_sp.php

Then you need to make use of technologies which allow you to provision accordingly:

Juniper and other vendors have equivalent capabilities, I'm just not very familiar with them. But the concepts are the same.

  13. NASA spaceflight. on Shuttle Politics · · Score: 3, Interesting

NASA is a jobs program for bureaucrats, and a goldmine for companies like . . . Lockheed-Martin.

Lockheed-Martin has no interest in seeing NASA shut down the shuttle - quite the opposite. Government contracting in general and NASA in particular are great cash-cows for LMC and for all the companies on the list you've cited.

Aging, sclerotic bureaucracies flying obsolete, overly-complex 'spacecraft' don't explore new frontiers.

The future of spaceflight doesn't lie with NASA - it lies with private ventures like Xcor. Taking the manned mission away from NASA and pushing them the hell out of the current command-and-control, false economy of the Shuttle-distorted launch market is the best thing that could happen to the cause of manned spaceflight.
