Mr Brown, seems to have made loads of statements with no real basis to back him up at all - much unlike his critics who have used real facts and figures to build upon. Where did he come up with statements like 'Linux is a leprosy' - and have nothing at all to say as to why he thinks its like that. He has no answer to his critics, so he will evade the real issues and facts, just try to keep people thinking about different things by such a response.

Okay, so he says that Linux might not be good for the s/w industry ( uneducated and uninformed as he is, he is most likely wrong ) - but is that the only industry there is in this whole world ? dont the other industries ( who have been held to ransom, more or less by organisations like MS and Sage ), also have a right to benefit ? If you look at the reality - the user base is many many times higher than the provider base. So how does the economy suffer ?

All in all, its not even worth commenting on this anymore. Mr. Brown is the hall mark of a paid dog, who is going to make a fwe bucks from his backers who want to see Linux down - cause they are incapable of doing that in real terms, tech terms or in direct compeition - so they must resort to people like Ken Brown to create this fascade and false FUD.

Look around you - does any of this work ?

If Linux wasent as big a threat to MS and such companies, they would leave it alone. But they cant, because Linux IS very much a threat - and its breaking them down.

  7. Professional Approach coming to Linux ? on Process Improvements in the Kernel Development · · Score: 5, Interesting

Sounds pretty good. I think Linux needs a basic system of this sort in place as-soon-as-practical. It will bring together a lot of accountability of / for code in the Kernel itself. Plus, it should counter any issue like the SCO created one, in the future.

Another interesting point here seems to be that with this management overhead and the admin work that issue such as this create, how much of time is Linus actually spending with them ? while he might be working with the technical side of things ?

Inspite of all the noise, there are just a handfull of people contributing major code into the Kernel ( would 300 be a fair guess ? ) How are all these admin overheads going to effect their performance ? Also is anyone / everyone expected to research the piles and piles of patenets / copyrights before they make such a declaration ?

  8. Something is not right on University Capitulates, Switches Off Spam Filters · · Score: 4, Insightful

the numbers dont add up, Loads of people have already raised the issue about the fact that 20 servers ( even decently mid spec single CPU machines ) will handle 100k emails an hour ( about 80 emails per min per machine is very achieveable ... ).

But there are some other issues you need to look at, with these emails not being scanned - do you know how much of storage you need to have online to have a mailstore this size and developing by the hour at 100k msgs ? not everyonce will use pop3 to get their emails, and not all the users will check email every day. Were talking about a very very large and very well setup Mail Store for this kind of volume. What about network bandwidth ?

A few basic things can reduce the work of those servers : Duplicacy level across these emails is going to be very high - all 100k emails per hour cannot be unique, there are going to be loads and loads of dupes, that dont even need to be scanned.

Creating a small database in-house with bad MailSender's list ( kind of like an in house RBL ), and flushing that list on an 6 hour interval will slow the inflow as well to quite an extent - in some tests done, i have seen it go down by almost 15 - 18% when there is a heavy load. Since most 'real' mailservers tend to retry, even if a genuine mailserver is blacklisted for 6 hours - it wont make much of a difference, however most 'hijacked PC's sending spam' dont have any retry or resending mechanism - and will just not be able to send into your server.

Another issue that helps stem the tide of bad email is to check for Virus infections before checking for spam. A lot of cases the tides of mail coming in can be virus infections ( which are easier and faster to check against - compared to rules + logic based spam checkers ).

However, all this is said and done without knowing of what system and what kind of a setup they use, there is no way anyone can really know what happened and why.

In the end, classic case for Linux and Unix based technologies to come into the frame I think.

Secondly, the issues that the reviewer raises are also adhoc - they cant be used to generalise the entire deal / spectrum of infomation that people need / want / desire.

Try looking for a code sample that shows you how the GTK# can be used from Mono to display a Multi level Outline filelist. What are the options that you have for this in the Non - Online world ?

The guy already knew who to ask / who to talk to - what if you dont know that - what then ? how do you go about finding the best non-online resource to speak with / enquire from ? My guess is that you are going to be heading right back online.

A good c# platform on Linux will encourage a lot more of the enterprise sector adapters to think about Linux in a positive frame of mind - and might even encourage cross platform development. ( apart from QT there isnt really any alternative at this time ).

However for the Open Source community to really achieve something great and be able to lead 'from the front' - we need to innovate, create better and more adaptable technologies not just play 'follow the leader'. There is a legal requirement for all list owners (! there is such a professional title !) to clean their data against the MPS and FPS. If your name is on the list, and you get something in the post / fax, you can claim compensation!

If you look on the website http://www.dmaconsumers.org/ [ dmsconsumers.org ] - there is an email Pref Service ( E-MPS ) there as well. The last time I went into this issue to any great detail, they were looking to see if they can make it a legal requirement along the lines of the MPS for third party email data rental work.
