When we perform menial jobs that can easily be replicated by machines, what separates us from machines? Perhaps the time has come where just being an Artist should be good enough to earn a good living. Right now, we all seem to be fighting over jobs that we don't like. Most likely, these are jobs that machines can do. In my honest opinion, the only worthwhile jobs for us left are those jobs that create something new (Engineer, Architect), give us a means to express ourselves (Artist, Ballerina, Sportsmen) or allow us to connect with other humans through providing care (Nurse, Fireman).
If you had a chance to be whatever you wanted to be. what would you be? In order for menial jobs to be replaced, they have to automated, but... we have to change our very idea about our society, money, life and needs as well. Perhaps this may be a utopian idea, but from the threads I've read, the news I've watched and the trends I've seen, it may not be a choice, but the only viable alternative to the coming chaos. Perhaps it's time to think about a world beyond money, where everything is a gift between the shared family of the human race, animals and the earth.
For once I think Linus is speaking CRUD
Gnome Shell is finally a nice Linux Desktop departure from the WinX, MacX clones.
I finally feel liberated from my mouse. Screw the rats. A keyboard gesture-based fully 3d graphical environment.
Fuck him.
Hooray for Miguel de Icaza.
Ciao
I would just like to thank Pam. "Thank You Pam; you have done an amazing job the last ten years or so."
Now we just need her to join the Patent reform wars.
I agree. It's fundamental to learn the concepts, spiritual values and hacker ethics(ERS). Let's hope the professor is doing this.
As for getting them involved. Teach them what excites you about computers? Give them Labs. Help them understand and get them to build their own "Facebook" out of Jabber, XHTML and Message Boards?
Do an experiment? Try build a FOSS motorized skateboard? Who cares, just as long as it's fun.
If you can help them find a passion, they will will learn the rest themselves.
How can stopping hurricanes be a good thing?
How do we know what adverse effects could occur if we interfered?
Imagine we stopped volcanoes?
Like all things natural; when we try stop them; something worse replaces them!
Yes... thats the point... Linux is translated into more languages then any other OS, and even if its missing some... the freedom to rewrite in your own language is there, license free!! Microsoft has set back computing at least 10 years by lockin to an ancient hardware platform, lockin to formats and lockins to licenses forbidding change, innovation of formats and data and freedom of information... LINUX/OSS/FSF, for the people, by the people who by nature floutish more in bazaars then cathedrals!!!
As long as our world is being driven by money and profit, corporations like microsoft will always prevail. History has shown us that the corrupting nature of cash ravages the world, because even a leader with good intentions cant seem to say no to a new boat, house or car! And if they dont say yes to money(debt) they will be driven out by assasination! Even though MS is giving away the initial Software/Hardware investment, the investee is bounded to a contract(long-term monetary slavery). Anything except Open Software will just help further Africa's lock into bondage to a US owned company that has no business in a world that desperately needs freedom! And especially a continent where the average wage is less then a dollar a day!
