The fact is that these devices are only part of the wider picture, of creating mass democracy into a democracy of domesticated consumers. people dont buy things any long because they NEED them, but rather because they want them, and often they want only because theyre deemed disireable by society, or because they see purchasing goods as a way of self expression.

say i locked all my windows, and doors, and im alone in my house. and say if i come downstairs christmas morning, and i discover gifts under the tree, and without any explination to how they could have gotten there. should i say that santa clause had put them there?

The Intelligent Design movement has opened my eyes. I realize that although I believe that evolution explains why the living world is the way it is, I can't actually prove it. At least not to the satisfaction of the ID folk, who seem to require that every example of extraordinary complexity and clever plumbing in nature be fully traced back (not just traceable back) along an evolutionary tree to prove that it wasn't directed by an invisible hand. If the scientific community won't do that, then the arguments goes that they must accept a large red "theory" stamp placed on the evolution textbooks and that alternative theories, such as "guided" evolution and creationism, be taught alongside.
So, by this standard, virtually everything I believe in must now fall under the shadow of unproveability. Most importantly, this includes the belief that democracy, capitalism and other market-driven systems (including evolution!) are better than their alternatives. Indeed, I suppose I should now refer to them as the "theory of democracy" and the "theory of capitalism", to join the theory of evolution, and accept the teaching of living Marxism and fascism as alternatives in high schools.

Technically evolution is a theory, not a LAW of science. but i dont think i see where the unconstitutionality comes in. of course these days judges dont interperate law, they make thier own. and these laws are on thier views of right or wrong, which may or may not be right or wrong.
Its about time that the US law stripped bare, because this is just one more example of how extremism is choking the air out of society.
Yes, its fundamentally wrong to put idiotic messages on all school books, yes its wrong to give children ideas of fantasy, and ludacrisyin a center of learning, and yes its done because of religon. but "so is life" and we cant go mandating what actions people are allowed to do. a better action would be to discipline whomevers decision it was to put the stickers there in the first place. this is DOE's job, not the courts.
believe it or not, i think this law is moot from my own first hand experiance with airport security. Being that i personally am the only person i know, who brought a wakizashi (sword) on a plane.
last year i was in SE asia, and i found a nice wakizashi for my brother. now being that me and my current girlfriend (muslim) were in a rush, and had to run to stop the train. she accidentally packed the sword onto my carry on luggage. as well as with the holy quran i had bought (because of my respect for her).
now for some reason, when i got through the airport in kuala lumpur, malaysia. my bag went through the xray machine, and nobody noticed my sword..... the sword got onto one plane, and i flew to taiwan. i got off in taipei, and ran my bags through yet another xray, and onto another plane, and still nobody notices that i have a sword in my bag.... now finally i get off in hong kong, and when i want to leave the country, i go through customs, and when they open my bag, they find the sword, while looking for contraband (drugs, plants, etc.)
now when she checked my bags, she pulled the sword from my bag, and my gf says "was that your carry on?". now, that prompts police being called to my location, and them arresting me for a day because they finally realized that i had a holy quran and a sword in my bag... in carry on... on a plane... and trust me the jails werent nice, there were some truly insane people in that jail. including one fella who kept banging his head on the wall for hours at the time.....
so my question. why do you even need ID? when you can sneak a sword on a plane even not intentionally? i mean you can hide weapons as all sorts of things. but grandma better not carry nail clippers, she might be dangerous.
well, to clarify. i may be full of shit about the phone being stolen, wouldnt be the first time i heard strange rumors. but the stories go that verizon was testing thier push to talk phones(hence the hear me now guys). somehow one of the employees had his phone stolen, by some employee of nextel(said to be found out after the license plate was taken). the apparent reason was to reverse engineer the verizon phones..... possibly gain some technical advantage....
anyways i dont got a great job over at verizon, i do all the grunt work. i just do routine it work, like re-assign passwords, fix things in our systems that someone decided to mess up.
but from my standpoint, nextel has an abundant overhead, and with abundant prices to match. and my father who used to use nextel always complained about customer service.
now from what i hear verizon is also planning to convert to gsm at some point in the future, as to when.... who knows. i got the feeling that theyre holding back as well. the reason being from what i understand is because verizon has a large reliable network. and thats thier nitche. the pro's to gsm is that its more bandwidth efficient (and thus cheaper) than either cdma or tdma. also gsm carriers have a cold handoff of the signal from one tower to the next when your traveling. whereas verizon does a warm handoff, though im not sure if this is just because of the technology or the carrier.
anyways nice to know that there is someone who knows what im talking about.... apparently telcom jokes arent that funny to people who dont work in telecom.....
wow, see the funny thing is, i work for verizon, and last time i checked switches use either 7(same npa) or 10 digits(diffrent npa/nxx to make a telephone call. i dont think ive ever been able to make a call with 9 digits except maybe *67 *82 911:P
anyways, nextel no longer has that nitche, verizon came up with push to talk on some of thier phones, and it comes through clearer, because of more effecient througput.
and... you know the funny thing is we really do got those "do you hear me now" guys. and nextel actually stole phones from these guys, and next thing you know there are lawsuits flying, and name calling.
anyways nextel i think will be done for, they charge a crap load, for shitty phones, and shitty customer service. and shitty service.
hey all, i work for the lnp department at veizon wireless, and i have to concur with the gentlemen here. verizon and most other carriers dont break even on a contract until about 5 months into it on a typical 2 yr contract. and being that most carriers have a trial period. when the customer returns the phones to us, its costs us ALOT OF MONEY. several hundred dollars in most cases. just figure out the time of all the parties involved. the depreciation (phones can not be sold as brand new). and what the FCC charges (last time i checked they charge 10$ for each time i query the national portability administration database). really the carries initially take a loss.
now this may sound like a shock, but actually you get cheaper service by these contracts than you normally would. imagine if everyone could change thier service whenever they wanted (easier with lnp), our overhead would be massive.
but in my humble professional opinion, if you really want to get screwed, choose nextel. they have the highest prices, least minutes, the most overhead, and they have to have phones especially designed for thier company, thier cell towers are propietary, no service level agreements (minimal tower sharing). the thing i hate the most, is that people cant port thier numbers easily because of 'number gaurd' meant to protect fraud. but really meant to keep you from switching carriers, and keeping your tel#.
ive read slashdot not only in ipoh, but in a small kampung(kampung) in the middle of the jungle. malaysia can be nice, but it matters where you are, i was in kelantan for 3 months, it was living hell. people said "matsaleh", wherever i went, but kuala lumpur was quite nice. and infact ill be going to malaysia in another 2 months for a 3 month visit. (got a girl who i am going to visit). and this time im going to see if perhaps i can get a job there because of abduallah badawi's new policy on open source.
speaking of whom, does anyone think he is better/worse than mahathir?
thats actually wrong, intel produces them IN MALAYSIA. myself, who has actually been to malaysia, and living in oregon (another intel location) know this to be true. and i believe that AMD makes thiers in Singapore, which is a city-state that broke away from malaysia.
did i mention that Kuala lumpur is extremely hi tech and cheap? great place, and i plan on going back there in a few months
well according to the news, hongkong had a protest of about 200,000 people after beijing announced that it(again) that its decision was final, and that they would not allow demacratic elections. details
now from what i saw when i went to hk, taipei, i would say that people there care much more about thier SMS's than voting..... so china get ready for a revolt. i have a feeling that people arent going to want this crap once they get a taste of what the modern world is like.
being that there is a paper mill in my town(oregon city) and one across the river. i know just a little bit about paper manufacturing. basically when i applied to work there, i was told that using recycled paper was cheaper. and i dont know why it would be cheaper if it uses more resources and energy.
for trees to be used, someone turns the tree in question into wood chips. then the chips are shipped by freight. then a machine grinds the chips into really small chips. and then those chips are put into a pressurized obliteration machine, which reduces the wood into small fibres. and they use a process of chemical bleaching, so what you get is a soup of white fibers in hot water.
for paper (usually newspaper), they simply have a shredder machine, and put the shredded bits into the obliteration machine. because the paper has already been reduced into fibers which can be easily seperated. in fact if you leave a news paper in boiling water for long enough, thats enough to yield the same effect(or so ive heard).
then they simply heat the soup until its a thick paste, and roll it out.
now it seems logical, that since its easier to process, that your statement that recycling requires more energy, must have to do with obtaining the product. and also that if its harder, takes more resources, or takes more energy to obtain the product that the it would be more expensive.
damn, i cant remember exactly when i made my slashdot username, but it seems alot older than most of them out there. i think what happened was that probably 6 years ago i might have made an account at my middle school, and just forgot about it, then tried to sign up again, realizing i had an account. anyways, if you care to chat sometime, starworks5@yahoo.com. is my mail and instant messenger address, and occasionally i use MSN, starworks5@hotmail.com. but i hate using MS products because im afraid that black helicopters are going to raid my house eventually, and mr gates will walk up with a 45 auto and put a hole in me. just so happens me and my father wrote the first opensource software legislation. the oregon source/open standards bill (hb2982). and as a funny coincidence, someday in the future i may meet linus, because he too, is also moving to oregon.... just my luck
anyways me and some friends have this idea of starting an army and massing around gate's house on lake washington. and yelling our techno-related war cries, before pulling out laptops and old ibm keyboards(mine is circa 1984, i was born '85), in an all out melee on the gates manor.
modpoints are a funny thing. they are based upon how your comments are modded, your meta-moderations(people who meta moderate unfair too often seem to get no mod points), and how often you visit slashdot. in fact if you visit slashdot too much, you wont get mod points. anyways i read one of your posts on xbox modding. ~$200 isnt bad for a computer, but i bought mine second hand from a organization that recycles, and donates computer for needy families. they use debian on all of their boxen, and i bought my 800mhz 256mb 20gb, for 45$. but one thing i would like to do with the xbox i have is put a large hdd inside, and copy dvd's onto it. and use it to replay them at a moments whim. with good xvid encoding, i bet i could get about 225 hours of video on a 100 gb drive.
well, the most nafarious patent of them all was when an ozzie man decided he wanted to patent the wheel, and actually succeded.
the lawyer patented the " circular transportation facilitation device". so that means anyone who ever produced car, bike, even unicycle in australia would have to pay royalities.
personally this is a prime example of intellectual rights gone amok. i would rather convert my car to square wheels before paying any damn royalites on a wheel. but i dont think it will be a problem. but just in case, im going to go patent the spherical rolling device. lets see MR. Keogh drive home without any ball bearings.
the point i was trying to prove was that i wasnt being racist, but rather i was being discriminatory (with merit). while someone who emphasizes on the importance of someone's race(from looks i believe) is racism. for example, the paraphrased quote " my SO. is japanese, (im not;-)"
but your generally right about the point on seperating race and facial features
im just pissed because people misread and misinterperated what i said. and i got modded down.
but i wonder if some point in the future the human race will become so mixed there will only be one race. i think i saw a south park episode about that.
anyways i dont have anything against you, you seem like a smart guy, and even more offtopic, is that i got an xbox, and im wondering what mods you did to it.
ATTN: anyone who claimed tha i was being racist should look up the defintion of being a racist and a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=dis criminate">discriminating. notice that there is nothing wrong with discriminating as long as it has basis. every day you discriminate, what suit looks better, what car you want to drive. discriminating is: To perceive the distinguishing features of; recognize as distinct; To distinguish by noting differences.
there is nothing wrong with anything i said, except maybe that he was being arrogant for being even slightly racist. also, just because you dont like what i have to say, doesnt mean its wrong. moreover what it probably means is that its something that you dont want to hear, you may identify with what im saying. and if so, you probably codone it (quite wrongly, because racism is wrong). but alas its the TRUTH, and the truth hurts. america at large acts (especially politicians) too diplomatic, instead of facing problems , they accomidate to them.
if everyone faced the truth, faced the problems, we could start to fix all the things wrong in this country
first off being racist and discriminating in the literal sense(not the typical), are two diffrent things. i never said he diddnt love her, he might indeed be racist, if you think that japanese are cutest, that is being racist. i dont know that he is taking advantage of her. but i would like that you think about what i write a little more.
First your interpretation of my comment is completely messed up. I was not even going to reply until I considered that other people would read your comment and might take part of your interpretation with them.
I find that comment a bit rude, and find you somewhat arrogant in nature. That was my only interperatation of your post. The fact that you emphasized the fact that she is japanese, and you are not. And winking, which to me signifies some sort of pride with the fact that she is japanese and you arent.
Most people associate racism with negative remarks, but racism goes both ways. if you say that japanese are attractive, even that is racist. personally i never emphasized race in any relationship, its totaly wrong.
in japan they have a term that they use for japanese women who sleep with white guys(rashamen). the term stems from when the dutch traded in wool japan, and japanese concluded, from watching inside the windows of the foreigners, that they were sleeping with thier sheep(they were actually watch dogs). later as japanese women replaced the dogs in thier beds, the term was passed to them.
and in fact the only time i mentioned race was when strangers brought up the subject. in my eyes it was simply ben and yumi, just two individuals.
If I had written "My SO is Japanese;-) I'm not" I could understand why you might have taken that point of view. My whole point was that I am not Japanese, which implied that my long distance rate was not based on intra-country rates but rather inter-country rates.
You HAD in fact written that, and i find that you could have simply something like "my SO is overseas, and we use a considerable amount of long distance to Japan. You diddnt have to mention that she was japanese, for all we would have known she could be white or japanese. You diddnt have to interject a wink, after stating that you werent japanese. But im generally not buying the fact that you were trying to imply inter-country rates. because im almost 100% sure that most people know that japan ISNT in the USA. "6 cents a minute to Japan. HTH"
The fact that you wrote such a long statement about interaracial issues based on your misinterpretation and your past "experience" suggests to me that you really need to get out more. Passing judgement (these women couldnt be trusted) on a whole culture from your isolated experiences is both wrong and... well f*cked up.
first off i did never say "experience" so your mis-quoting me, or saying that im lieing. both are false. also you say that my experiances are isolatedm, when in fact i mention that its not isolated. and i have known of many cases of that. im finding that your more grossly mis-interperating what i said, more so than i did to you.
moreover, i get out alot more than you would think, i would say that a dozen countries on 3 continents(in the past several years as well) is "getting out" quite a bit. in fact i spend less than 2/3rds of the year in the USA.
an another point i was passing judgements on "many asian girls liked white guys for various reasons [slashdot.org]"(there was a link)"(there was a link). ill give you an example, there are a group of girls in singapore called the "sarong party girls". which is a group of girls who solely go out looking for white guys to fuck, or couple with. they even have organized meetings where they talk about strategies, and experiances. i remember one girl i met saying to me "I tell all my friends that once youve gone to white meat, you never go back". also there are a considerable amount of girls who just want to get out of the country, and want better oppertunity. the judgement was that i even dated a few myself, but many times these women couldnt be trusted. because if things got hard, or werent as they expected, they would hook up with the next white guy they saw. which was also true. and i would love you to tell me HOW, its wrong.
come visit us for a free breakfast and lunch for some wonderful timeshare opportunities, you can find us on the third rock from sol.
but really here is the video

Yes, its fundamentally wrong to put idiotic messages on all school books, yes its wrong to give children ideas of fantasy, and ludacrisyin a center of learning, and yes its done because of religon. but "so is life" and we cant go mandating what actions people are allowed to do. a better action would be to discipline whomevers decision it was to put the stickers there in the first place. this is DOE's job, not the courts.
believe it or not, i think this law is moot from my own first hand experiance with airport security. Being that i personally am the only person i know, who brought a wakizashi (sword) on a plane.
last year i was in SE asia, and i found a nice wakizashi for my brother. now being that me and my current girlfriend (muslim) were in a rush, and had to run to stop the train. she accidentally packed the sword onto my carry on luggage. as well as with the holy quran i had bought (because of my respect for her).
now for some reason, when i got through the airport in kuala lumpur, malaysia. my bag went through the xray machine, and nobody noticed my sword..... the sword got onto one plane, and i flew to taiwan. i got off in taipei, and ran my bags through yet another xray, and onto another plane, and still nobody notices that i have a sword in my bag.... now finally i get off in hong kong, and when i want to leave the country, i go through customs, and when they open my bag, they find the sword, while looking for contraband (drugs, plants, etc.)
now when she checked my bags, she pulled the sword from my bag, and my gf says "was that your carry on?". now, that prompts police being called to my location, and them arresting me for a day because they finally realized that i had a holy quran and a sword in my bag... in carry on... on a plane... and trust me the jails werent nice, there were some truly insane people in that jail. including one fella who kept banging his head on the wall for hours at the time.....
so my question. why do you even need ID? when you can sneak a sword on a plane even not intentionally? i mean you can hide weapons as all sorts of things. but grandma better not carry nail clippers, she might be dangerous.
well, to clarify. i may be full of shit about the phone being stolen, wouldnt be the first time i heard strange rumors. but the stories go that verizon was testing thier push to talk phones(hence the hear me now guys). somehow one of the employees had his phone stolen, by some employee of nextel(said to be found out after the license plate was taken). the apparent reason was to reverse engineer the verizon phones..... possibly gain some technical advantage....
anyways i dont got a great job over at verizon, i do all the grunt work. i just do routine it work, like re-assign passwords, fix things in our systems that someone decided to mess up.
but from my standpoint, nextel has an abundant overhead, and with abundant prices to match. and my father who used to use nextel always complained about customer service.
now from what i hear verizon is also planning to convert to gsm at some point in the future, as to when.... who knows. i got the feeling that theyre holding back as well. the reason being from what i understand is because verizon has a large reliable network. and thats thier nitche. the pro's to gsm is that its more bandwidth efficient (and thus cheaper) than either cdma or tdma. also gsm carriers have a cold handoff of the signal from one tower to the next when your traveling. whereas verizon does a warm handoff, though im not sure if this is just because of the technology or the carrier.
anyways nice to know that there is someone who knows what im talking about.... apparently telcom jokes arent that funny to people who dont work in telecom.....
friends, what friends?
[sarcasm police=off]
[stupidy police= on]
:P
wow, see the funny thing is, i work for verizon, and last time i checked switches use either 7(same npa) or 10 digits(diffrent npa/nxx to make a telephone call. i dont think ive ever been able to make a call with 9 digits except maybe *67 *82 911
anyways, nextel no longer has that nitche, verizon came up with push to talk on some of thier phones, and it comes through clearer, because of more effecient througput.
and... you know the funny thing is we really do got those "do you hear me now" guys. and nextel actually stole phones from these guys, and next thing you know there are lawsuits flying, and name calling.
anyways nextel i think will be done for, they charge a crap load, for shitty phones, and shitty customer service. and shitty service.
hey all, i work for the lnp department at veizon wireless, and i have to concur with the gentlemen here. verizon and most other carriers dont break even on a contract until about 5 months into it on a typical 2 yr contract. and being that most carriers have a trial period. when the customer returns the phones to us, its costs us ALOT OF MONEY. several hundred dollars in most cases. just figure out the time of all the parties involved. the depreciation (phones can not be sold as brand new). and what the FCC charges (last time i checked they charge 10$ for each time i query the national portability administration database). really the carries initially take a loss.
now this may sound like a shock, but actually you get cheaper service by these contracts than you normally would. imagine if everyone could change thier service whenever they wanted (easier with lnp), our overhead would be massive.
but in my humble professional opinion, if you really want to get screwed, choose nextel. they have the highest prices, least minutes, the most overhead, and they have to have phones especially designed for thier company, thier cell towers are propietary, no service level agreements (minimal tower sharing). the thing i hate the most, is that people cant port thier numbers easily because of 'number gaurd' meant to protect fraud. but really meant to keep you from switching carriers, and keeping your tel#.
ive read slashdot not only in ipoh, but in a small kampung(kampung) in the middle of the jungle. malaysia can be nice, but it matters where you are, i was in kelantan for 3 months, it was living hell. people said "matsaleh", wherever i went, but kuala lumpur was quite nice. and infact ill be going to malaysia in another 2 months for a 3 month visit. (got a girl who i am going to visit). and this time im going to see if perhaps i can get a job there because of abduallah badawi's new policy on open source.
speaking of whom, does anyone think he is better/worse than mahathir?
mine certainly could, an original IBM (copyright 1984 produced 1987) clickey keyboard, and it weighs about 10lbs.
thats actually wrong, intel produces them IN MALAYSIA. myself, who has actually been to malaysia, and living in oregon (another intel location) know this to be true. and i believe that AMD makes thiers in Singapore, which is a city-state that broke away from malaysia.
did i mention that Kuala lumpur is extremely hi tech and cheap? great place, and i plan on going back there in a few months
well according to the news, hongkong had a protest of about 200,000 people after beijing announced that it(again) that its decision was final, and that they would not allow demacratic elections. details
now from what i saw when i went to hk, taipei, i would say that people there care much more about thier SMS's than voting..... so china get ready for a revolt. i have a feeling that people arent going to want this crap once they get a taste of what the modern world is like.
being that there is a paper mill in my town(oregon city) and one across the river. i know just a little bit about paper manufacturing. basically when i applied to work there, i was told that using recycled paper was cheaper. and i dont know why it would be cheaper if it uses more resources and energy.
for trees to be used, someone turns the tree in question into wood chips. then the chips are shipped by freight. then a machine grinds the chips into really small chips. and then those chips are put into a pressurized obliteration machine, which reduces the wood into small fibres. and they use a process of chemical bleaching, so what you get is a soup of white fibers in hot water.
for paper (usually newspaper), they simply have a shredder machine, and put the shredded bits into the obliteration machine. because the paper has already been reduced into fibers which can be easily seperated. in fact if you leave a news paper in boiling water for long enough, thats enough to yield the same effect(or so ive heard).
then they simply heat the soup until its a thick paste, and roll it out.
now it seems logical, that since its easier to process, that your statement that recycling requires more energy, must have to do with obtaining the product. and also that if its harder, takes more resources, or takes more energy to obtain the product that the it would be more expensive.
damn, i cant remember exactly when i made my slashdot username, but it seems alot older than most of them out there. i think what happened was that probably 6 years ago i might have made an account at my middle school, and just forgot about it, then tried to sign up again, realizing i had an account. anyways, if you care to chat sometime, starworks5@yahoo.com. is my mail and instant messenger address, and occasionally i use MSN, starworks5@hotmail.com. but i hate using MS products because im afraid that black helicopters are going to raid my house eventually, and mr gates will walk up with a 45 auto and put a hole in me. just so happens me and my father wrote the first opensource software legislation. the oregon source/open standards bill (hb2982). and as a funny coincidence, someday in the future i may meet linus, because he too, is also moving to oregon.... just my luck
anyways me and some friends have this idea of starting an army and massing around gate's house on lake washington. and yelling our techno-related war cries, before pulling out laptops and old ibm keyboards(mine is circa 1984, i was born '85), in an all out melee on the gates manor.
modpoints are a funny thing. they are based upon how your comments are modded, your meta-moderations(people who meta moderate unfair too often seem to get no mod points), and how often you visit slashdot. in fact if you visit slashdot too much, you wont get mod points. anyways i read one of your posts on xbox modding. ~$200 isnt bad for a computer, but i bought mine second hand from a organization that recycles, and donates computer for needy families. they use debian on all of their boxen, and i bought my 800mhz 256mb 20gb, for 45$. but one thing i would like to do with the xbox i have is put a large hdd inside, and copy dvd's onto it. and use it to replay them at a moments whim. with good xvid encoding, i bet i could get about 225 hours of video on a 100 gb drive.
well, the most nafarious patent of them all was when an ozzie man decided he wanted to patent the wheel, and actually succeded.
the lawyer patented the " circular transportation facilitation device". so that means anyone who ever produced car, bike, even unicycle in australia would have to pay royalities.
dont believe me, well check the BBC or CNN
personally this is a prime example of intellectual rights gone amok. i would rather convert my car to square wheels before paying any damn royalites on a wheel. but i dont think it will be a problem. but just in case, im going to go patent the spherical rolling device. lets see MR. Keogh drive home without any ball bearings.
the point i was trying to prove was that i wasnt being racist, but rather i was being discriminatory (with merit). while someone who emphasizes on the importance of someone's race(from looks i believe) is racism. for example, the paraphrased quote " my SO. is japanese, (im not ;-)"
but your generally right about the point on seperating race and facial features
im just pissed because people misread and misinterperated what i said. and i got modded down.
but i wonder if some point in the future the human race will become so mixed there will only be one race. i think i saw a south park episode about that.
anyways i dont have anything against you, you seem like a smart guy, and even more offtopic, is that i got an xbox, and im wondering what mods you did to it.
I was not even going to reply until I considered that other people would read your comment and might take part of your interpretation with them.
;-) I'm not" I could understand why you might have taken that point of view. My whole point was that I am not Japanese, which implied that my long distance rate was not based on intra-country rates but rather inter-country rates.
If I had written "My SO is Japanese
YES ITS VERY F*CKED UP, but its t
