  1. Possible solution: isolationism on Our New Pearl Harbor · · Score: 1

I know it is selfish and would make the United States out to be very bad world citizens, but I think it is time to re-adopt the isolationist foreign policies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

It is becoming painfully clear that nobody is going to be able to fix the religious and ethnic problems of this earth--people fear difference--and they always will.

Honestly, what good has come from the last 20 years of Middle-East negotiations? Half of Africa are still refugees. Sadly, this stuff will not go away no matter how much we fight it.

  2. of course on MS getting rid of SAMBA? · · Score: 1

I think that most people could see something like this coming from a mile away. And I don't think it will be the last thing either.

It makes sense for Microsoft to encourage the use of Microsoft technology and discourage all others. Samba and whatever else be damned in the process.

    It sucks.

  3. It all depends on Does Age Really Matter? · · Score: 1
I think it boils down to the people making the judgement.

When I was in college I worked a student job as a programmer on campus next to full-time, salaried employees. Most of the people I worked with respected me for the work I had accomplished and the capabilities I had. They listened to my ideas and I felt I was an equal part of the team.

Occasionally, I had to work with other campus employees (either getting things from them, or getting them to do something). I can remember several phone calls: after finding the person I wanted to talk to and explaining the premise of my call, the first thing I heard was, "is this a student?" I knew what they were getting at but could never understand how such a question would help them to solve the problem at hand.

The implication is that there will always be people who use age as a way to guage experience. They will either hit or miss. Fortunately, there are also those who will wait to make a judgement based on some rational criteria.

  4. An alternative on Publishers vs. Libraries · · Score: 1

I know this isn't as convenient as a public library, but if there were no more free libraries, here is what I would do: A) read the book at the library (don't check it out); or B) just hop on down to your local Barnes and Noble. They have plenty of seating, tons of books, and a coffee shop to boot. Believe it or not, when I was in school, I used to go to Barnes and Noble to study instead of the university library because I found the atmosphere more conducive (I think B&N was actually more quiet!). Just a thought.

So will DeBeer's take charge of all the processors? I can only imagine what prices will be like then.

  7. More factors on Apache vs IIS in Performance? · · Score: 1

Getting conclusive these days is hard. A lot of sites are becoming more intensely database driven. This means that when guaging performance, one must also take into account the database on the back end. I don't want to get into a flame war on which configuration rocks most, but there are some OBVIOUS things that should be avoided. I took a few statistics classes in college and have even done some benchmarking on my own (you know, to satisfy investors), and it is so easy to slant numbers your way. So I say, try a few configurations for your project and figure out what is or is not working. You'll eventually find something that works. By the way, we run DELL servers--some with Linux, some with NT. We don't get enough traffic to grade one better than the other, but have had problems with IIS conflicting with other software. No problems like that with Apache.
