  1. Come on Mr. Katz on The Rise Of The Chickclickers · · Score: 1

I'm not one of the pure Katz Haters, sometimes I think you have interesting things to say, and sometimes I get alot from your columns. This is a different story. I'm sorry, but how many times can we say that men are more technical and women are more social?

Fine, this is clear. I also wouldn't necessarily say that women getting involved in the internet is "the most important online movement today" or however you put it. I think movements like open source and the ability to provide news without real corporate involvement are both more important than this. I would assume that women would get online, it is the perfect social medium, and it's not like women madly run away from computers.

I wonder how this stacks up to AMD's value priced offering, the Spitifire?

There are register rumors (thereby lending credence to the word "rumor") that the spitfires are actually faster than the Athlons. The register claims that they are holding back the spitfire until they can release their new athlon with on-die l2 cache. I don't know if that's true or not, but the Spitfire definitely looks like a serious contender for the Celeron II.

This calculusgirls site is total bullshit. Not only are 4 out of 5 staff men, but the site is basically still promoting the looks of these girls who are good at math, enforcing the stereotypical viewpoint that all men care about is how a woman looks. This may be true for some men, and this is certainly true for things like porn, but in real life, I want a woman who can challenge me, and keep me guessing, who is at, above, or near my level of intelligence, and not necessarily interested in the same things. This site claims that it is promoting "smart women", but it isn't.. it's still promoting "smart, attractive women", and fuck, no offense to anyone, but if these calculus girls were so smart, why couldn't they make the site themselves?

    Flames expected.

I also happen to be one of the few that believes that microsoft employees tend to be among the most talented employees in the world, and that they are severly under-respected despite incredible achievements.

    I'm not so sure...

Stephen King actually has a fairly decent history of looking out for his readers. The last book in the Dark Tower series was released in Paperback first, so as to reduce reader costs. I really appreciated that, because I didn't want to have to wait, and I was in college at that time, and $25-30 for a hardcover book is a lot when you're in college (especially when that money could be going towards an O'Reilly book). I wouldn't doubt Stephen King's ability to put a full novel out over the Internet.

The only athlon 1GHZ listed on Pricewatch is selling for $1399 (outrageous), and $10 shipping. Handling is another matter, but I would be surprised if it went much above $10.

If you really wanted to make a good counter argument, you could point out things that DON'T ship cheaply (Monitors, cases, UPSs), I thought of that, but In general, I think computer parts are small but cheap.

The rest of retaildom is another matter. I certainly think this should be investigated further, though.

'k, first off, one of the solutions I suggested was to abolish all sales tax.

Also, there is plenty of justification for taxation, but, as you said, let's leave that can of worms unopened.

I wasn't really thinking of CompUSA, because they could and have opened eCommerce deals already.

I'm thinking of Joe's computer outlet, who I've been shopping with for 10 years until I headed over to find out that Pricewatch lists the same part at joe's for the same price, only... since i'm in the same state as Joe, I have to pay an extra 30-40 bucks.

Of course on some items, like monitors, cases, larger things with more expensive shipping, It works fine, and Joe has the advantage, but overall, I think the online deals have the advantage.

You're totally right about support though. That's huge, that's the main reason I've never purchased memory online, so I could easily return it.

  16. Some interesting points but... on Analyzing the Real Impact of Taxing E-Commerce · · Score: 3

Honestly, I think internet sales should be taxed. Perhaps less than Brick and Mortar companies, but some. It simply comes down to not being fair. If I can buy a new Athlon 1GHZ for $1400 at a local store and play $102.20 in sales tax versus buying it over the internet for the same price but paying $5.00 shipping, then of course I'm not going to buy it from the local store. I may want to support local busineses, but a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks.

The argument that attemped to address this "Catalogs have always been tax exempt" failed, because catalog purchases haven't been as widespread, historically, as eCommerce. I've never bought anything from a catalog, but I have purchased several hundred dollars in computer parts over the Internet. I don't like paying more money than anyone else, but as far as I'm concerned, it's either a) Abolish sales tax, or b) Institute eCommerce/Mail Order tax.

It's just more fair that way.

WOW! A short Katz piece. Seriously, this study definitely assumes that while we're on the net we're not communicating with friends and family. I think many of the sites I go to with active messageboard systems (such as this one), promote friendship. You get to know the people who come and post on the sites you go to. I've had someone from Slashdot contact me about a post I made for a story, and it was amazing, someone that I could have started a dialogue with (I didn't, but I could've).

As far as family? I live in Colorado, and most of my mother's side of the family lives on the east coast. I'm not good at letters, and phone calls get too expensive. I can stay in good contact with my entire family, using the 'net. So what if I spend 30 hours a week on it? much of that time is spent cultivating new friendships, and adding fuel to old ones.

The sense of community people feel here at Slashdot and at other, similar sites is unique to our age, and I think it should be held up as an example of how telecommunications was MEANT to work. This is what people talk about when they say Global Village (a few spammers and flamers aside).

Honestly, I don't really know enough about this to comment on which is better or why, I've never needed directory services like these, and it's unlikely that I ever will. However, I know that Windows 2000 is a step up from Windows NT 4.0, and I know that I've NEVER been impressed with ANYTHING I've seen from Novell. As far as I'm concerned these benchmark results are totally useless.
