  1. Re:GPL?? on Microsoft's GPL IPv6 Web Server. Not Really. · · Score: 1

Fnord isn't owned by Microsoft, it's a GPL'd webserver they ported to run on their IPv6 IP stack so they're required to GPL their version of it.

How about a MP3 CD player, standalone net browser, calculating pi, a Seti@home client. I mean there are a lot of possiblites, using network file systems you aren't even limited to just a read-only filesystem.

Linux runs on the Dreamcast with little changes at all. This guy has already got Linux working on the DC and is working on a custom OS.

FreeBSD works just fine on my IBM A20m laptop, I have no idea way everybody is going on about it not. Is there anyone out there that hasn't got FreeBSD to work on there laptops? I'd love to hear from them

My Thinkpad runs FreeBSD just fine.. well I haven't got sound running and the winmodem doesn't work of course, but everything else works. In fact my laptop has more trouble booting windows, it just hangs there for a 30 seconds like it's waiting for something to happen.

How would something like this affect the enviroment? I'm sure it's a lot nicer then fossil fuels and nuclear waster, but what about animal habitats? How much beach space would be required to make this feasible? Where would you even put these generators? Certinly not on my beach!

Tution goes up a LITTLE? Try over $1000 dollars when it was first implemented. Slackware is great but the template they use is complete crap. Acadia is now the most expensive university in Canada because of this program! And worse yet we don't even get full internet access! Everything but http, ftp, and ICQ is banned. I can't even use CVS! The program is a good idea, with a very very very bad implementation.

  9. Java's a great beginning on Best Way to Get Kids Started in Programming? · · Score: 1

I'd suggest using Java with a Visual RAD like JBuilder. Java teaches the basics of programming, doesn't have pointers (I hate generic pointers!), you can also introduce object oriented programming early. The best part about Java is that you can move to C with relative ease as the syntax is similar.

As for books at Acadia the programming intro book was Computing Concepts with Java 2 Essentials by Cay Horstmann which I found to be good, it starts with the basics, introduces objects early and goes onto things like Swing, exception handling and program designing.

Then we moved onto Modern C after Java by Tomasz Muldner which basically tries to move the programmer over to C, I found the book wasn't very straight forward though and hard to read... This might be attributed to the fact that my class was the test case for this book (we all had to buy a print off of the draft copy of the book), it does have a good focus on portabilty and robustness though.

  10. I see.... on What Does the Audio Home Recording Act Really Allow? · · Score: 1

Thanks, I wasn't too sure about how it worked in America. Here in Canada we pay a dollar on ever CDR, there's no distinction between them. Actually I've never actual seen a Audio CDR

  11. Manipulation of the facts on What Does the Audio Home Recording Act Really Allow? · · Score: 2

The RIAA is quick to point out that computer compaines do not pay them any royalties. They neglect however to mention that under the Audio Home Recording Act there is a royalty payment for the medium used to make digital copies, which in my understanding includes CDR's. This means that you can make digital recordings of your music using your computer onto a CDR as you have already paid the royalty. And did anyone else notice that the RIAA never directly referred to the Act in question, or gave anyone directions on where they can find a copy of it? What do they have to be afraid of?
