Agreed, I've always found it amazing how many American's honestly believe that they are the only country with civil rights.
I think that this is probably a hang over of Cold War era propaganda. Not that I'm saying communsit Russia was good, just that the America government really pushed the idea that America was the safe haven of freedoms and all that was good yadda yadda.
P2P is a technology. It does not imply copyright violations that's just what it is most commonly used for right now. What I think Microsoft is looking at P2P for is making ad-hoc workgroups without the need for centerlized servers.
Wow.. I second this, just without all the anger and shit.:)
Seriously, the real benift to RISC is the ease with which the compiler can do optimizations, it's much easier to pipeline when each instruction takes the same amount of time in the pipe. Unlike CISC when you can have some instructions take 5 cycles and others take 20 or so.
The reason the RISC arguement has died down is because 1) everbody knows it's true and 2) 90% of the computers out there are stuck with CISC because of backwards compatiblity concerns.
Developers usually chose the development platform for ease of use. NeXTStep was used for Doom and Quake. Playstation 2 games are made on Linux, etc. Besides this article isn't talking about making games on OSX for OSX, but making tools on OSX, with a obvious slant towards the console market.
If you're looking for a high-end system check out the Power Mac's. They include a GeoForce 4 MX or ATI Radeon 7500, and the higher end models are dual 1 ghz systems. Now this is my idea of a development system. To bad I can't afford one:`(
Nah, this doesn't hurt proprietary UNIX developers either. The mainframe used to run IBM's UNIX, so all the developer working on that have probably just been moved to the much cooler job of working on linux. This looks like a win-win situation to me, IBM cuts costs by using an existing OS instead of writing and maintaining their own, and customers save money on licensing.
But the DMCA gets around this since such modchips have are copy protection circumvention devices. So not only could this happen in the US, but it would happen a lot more easily
Okay the judge said that backups are legal and useful, but then said because backups can be distributed that piracy is the main concern. huh? I'm sure when that law was made that they knew that backups could lead to piracy, but at that time they decieded the rights of consumers where more important. Now I see a horrible shift as the rights of companys are outwieghing our rights.
I'm not saying Sony can't protect their assets, but at the same time by saying that I can't make a backup of my games/dvds/whatever they are saying that I can't protect mine.
Does anyone know of any credible studies on the matter? There are plenty of rumours and beliefs on things like these, but I've never had any point to any real evidence. Not that I'm saying I don't think some people are sensitive, I just would like for something more then somebody claiming to have a headache when around cell phones.
I too would love to work with Woz. Not only because of his brilliance, but also he's humanity (left Apple to teach children!), and his understanding of the hacker sub-culture, I mean he's work with Captin Crunch!
People's rights aren't in question here, since they aren't the owners of the establisments. Although this does affect the minors it is only indirectly.
This is a good point. Many of the simple programs given as assignments have very straight forward (and similar) answers. I friend of mine was 'caught' cheating with someone who had never had any contact with.
UML is a modeling language while XML is a markup langauge.
To call UML a langauge is a bit deceptive, it is not a written langauge but rather a visual one. It is a method of using diagrams to show how a system works.
But it still personal use right? Why should I have to suffer a loss in quality when I watch my movie because I'm allowed to broadcast over my rabbit but not my wireless lan?
"Here you can listen to this cd in your own house all you want, but you can only hear it when your head is underwater."
Here in the little town of Lakeville I can't get broadband. Not because of content holders, but because cable companies have 'protected' markets here. Therefore nobody is allowed to offer cable service on my road except for "Cross Country Cable Ltd" a little mom and pop cable company that hasn't heard of "the internet" yet.

Well my general rule is if I can't find the price then I can't afford it. Of course I can't usually afford it when I can find the price too :)

Yeah I know, but I get so much enjoyment out of poking fun at Microsoft products. :)
Comment on article and I get this:
/Components/TalkBack/tb-post.asp, line 92 :P
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a0006'
Overflow: 'Cint'
Maybe somebody there should consider Linux

When you program in SDL you still need OpenGL to handle all the 3D programming, using SDL is just a nice way of hiding all the windowing code.

hmmm. I agree, but for me it's a mute point, at least until Canada decides to pass it's own DMCA. Something I, unfortuntaly, don't think is far off.

With XBox in more living rooms them Tivo, this means that Microsoft has a huge platform to launch from if they extend UltimateTV to the XBox.
Good point. I know a 4th year student who doesn't know C, but watch out his Counter-Strike skills are amazing.

MPEG is for streaming, just at higher speeds.
I'll have you know that many /.'ers remember Amigas with much fondness. It truly was an OS ahead of it's time.
My boss has one on the way! hehe being a PDA developer rocks.
