It would have to be able to interface with a mail program. I have not tried evolution, but if it could interface with that it would be nice. Netscape as well or pine && emacs too.
Of course it would need to work under Linux.
I'd need to be able to easily sync it with my palm pilot.
It would need audio reminders.
It would need to be able to interface with with my address book (netscape or evolution).
I'd need to be able to check to make sure that others were not busy and check their schedules as well. Similar to that of MS schedule.
I'd need to be able to schedule appointments with those using Outlook as well.
Basically what I'd need would be Outlook functionality on Linux. Thus I would not need a windows box anymore. Okay now it is not that I hate using windows, it is just that there are some things that are easier to do under Linux for me. I do lots of server side development and our servers are linux and solaris and BSD. So rather than sshing into the servers I have a linux box at work that I do my devlopment on then I port to the other 2 UNIXes. To do this development on windows is not possible as the porting is much more complicated. (Think apache modules, perl, php). I have a windows box that sits so I can check my email and check somepages in explorer when I need to. To have that functionality on Linux I'd never use windows.

Only a dumb user would make a statment "Plaintiffs allege that (the defendant) has covertly, without consent or authorization, planted 'cookies' upon Internet users' computer hard disk drives and secretly tracked their movements across the Internet," the plaintiffs charged in a filing in Denver, Colo. "
If they were not truely dumb, they would realize that they could prevent cookies from being set on there machine. Both IE and Netscape have a way to shut off and turn on cookies. Although Microsofts IE is a little more illusive (IMHO). Nothing with cookies is done "covertly". If you are using a browser that accepts cookies, you can shut this functionality off, or have it prompt you before accepting cookies. In IE this may be more difficult, but is possible. Most web sites also state there stance on privacy. I don't think I have been to a web site that does not use cookies. SO are they going to include all these too? Many major web sites use cookies to track there users where abouts. If they are going to sue Matchlogic, why not include doubleclick and engage as well? Doubleclick is far worse than matchlogic. Doubleclick has mapped out IP addresses on teh web, and when you get one of their sites they know where you are on th eplanet. They 'say' that they do not use this, but the info is available. They also use cookies as well.
If they want to do something about this then they need to use konqueror, lynx,or Netscape (not sure how well IE handles this) and set there browser to prompt on recieving cookies, then reject any ones they don't want. This is good as it describes "How to read patent descriptions". It explains some parts of the patents. Unfortunately (for those in the US) this is European patents which are slightly different from US patents.
This is also good as it shows how many dumb patents have been issued by the European office. My favorite so far is "controlling one computer by another", which they say telnet does. I think that this is the beginning of patent reform. Maybe this will open the eyes of the US, European, and Asian patent offices and make them realize that they are issuing patents on 20 year old technology and obvious technology.
The biggest problem with the patent arena is that it is filled with laywers. If it were up to many technologists I think the ideas would be more likely open like the HTML, XML, IEEE, and RFC standards are. I know that I'd like to see much of these ideas open rather than closed.

I've been using Linux for 4 years and I still find debian installation to be the most confusing. The menu then submenu then dependancies. It boggles the mind. Why not do the dependancy checking after I have selected all the packages. I'll admit it has been a while since I tried debian (2.0). But I don't think it has changed that much.
Why are they focusing on debian? What about slackware? Oh yeah that is easy to install, it just doesn't have a decent package manager. I think that is why I went with Redhat. It was easy to install (relatively) and has some sort of package management. It is nice to be able to upgrade fro mRH 5.0 to 7.0 with little problems. I hear debain's apt get is supposed to be nicer, the only problem I have is getting debain installed and getting through dselect. How about "dselect for dummies"? Or installation for idiots. Something short and simple. Or better yet just redoing the installation of it to make it more humanly understandable.

Uh, no confusion here. Kde and GNOME are as much a part of Linux (the OS) as the kernel is. YOu don't hear someone saying I use Redhat BSD it's redhat Linux or redhat GNU/Linux. Yes kde/gnome work on Solaris and BSD and other UNIXes, but lets face it, they follow the open source trend with Linux and much of kde (qt license issues) have been driven by Redhat and debian refusing to include them. Yes it is true that you don't need linux to use them, but did anyone see BSD complain about kde license? NO you saw it from Linux users.I am not talking about kernel integration but integration between kde and gnome. Yes they can still be seperate, but it would be nice if they had common libraries. I guess it would be nice if qt and gtk were part of the standard libraries, and kde libs and well as gnome libs were too. Thus a base install of X could have these libraries like include X lib extensions? Yes and then they are installed. Maybe this is with the installer.
By more compatibility between distros, I mean that rpms from SUSE shoudl be easily installed with no --force no --nodeps and no error messages provided that you do have the proper libraries. This is essentially up to rpm. Which IS part of Linux as I don't think any NON linux OSes use rpm. Sure you can have 100 linux distros, on the shelf, but I should not need to compile 1 program 100 times for each of them.
By slow I mean slow to start up. To many libraries have to be loaded on start bu kde and / or gnome. try starting konqueror in gnome/sawmill. It takes a while to start up. It would be nice maybe if gtk and qt libs could be loaded up by X or the windowmanager upon start up or if this were an option available in X or the windowmanagers. This means that starting X would take longer, but the applications would start up fast. Hey it takes a while for my system to start, but that is beause I start all my service outside of inetd and in the startup scripts.

I'd like to see rpm be improved, but I don't think that apt-get is the way to go. apt-get is a cludge and cumbersome to use. It is not friendly and easy. If it were they'd be using it by now. Why do you think that so many distros are based on RPM? Cause is is slightly better. Yes it does lack functionality. I'd really like to see rpm gain the functionality of apt-get, but still remain the way it is.

The kernel will start to move to more modularity. Yes it supports modules, but more generic hoks to the kernel, so that adding new modules will never require a recompile. The only real reason would be if the base kernel needed changes. More towards a micro kernel based architecture. More improved kernel subsystems.
In user land, I'd like to see more kde/gnome/pick your wm integration. Yes they are compatable, but more compatability inin things like themes, and theme creation tools. Applications need better performance as well. So many kde and gnome applications take forever to start up, on my dual 233 w/128Meg of RAM. That is bad. maybe this could be fixed by more compatibility in th elibraries them selves and then the libraries that these programs use could be loaded into RAM at window manager startup. Or this could be an option for those with the memory. Thus the applications could start up real quick.
Next I'd like to see the distros become more standardized across the board. I.E. I should be able to install an RPM from one distro on another with no recompile and no problems, like this is not Mandrake or SUSE error messages on Redhat.

Has anyone else noticed at how much duplication efforts there are going on between kde and GNOME? The panels are starting to look like each others. The filemanger icons are starting to look like each others. What they really need is the KDE to gnome integrationfoundation. Yes you can have different window managers and desktops, but how much code is being duplicated here. The difference is only C or C++ in some cases. Hey kde has 2 editors kwrite and kedit. They are almost identical. I hope that by kde 2.1 they finish merging those two into one. It's silly to have 2 editors that are that much identical in 1 desktop.

I only do that if I absolutely need to.

This problem we are seeing with the election is asymptomatic of the problems in the goverment today. We need to implement a better and easier way of dealing with elections. People also need to be able to get a reciept after they vote so that they know who they voted for.
The patent office is filled with this type of inadequacies. The DMV, and many other offices. What can be done? Don't let Bush or Gore in the white house. Neither of them know enough about technology althougth Gore may be a little better.
Get this the Republicans think that the electronic counting system is more accurate than hand counting Yet there were 33 votes that were found when hand counted cause the card reader did not pick up on holes that were not punched through correctly. Both Bush and Gore need to get the hell out of Fl and take there parties with them and let FL do its job. If Bush gets into office then let it be after all the counts are done. It looks like kde 2.0 neds Mesa. Not just any mesa but a particular mesa. Thus I cannot run kwin nor kde. I can run some kde apps, but since I upgraded to kde 2.0 my system has been slightly problematic. GNOME does not shutdown correctly. Kde doesn't run. kconqueror does run and it is pretty sweet. It is slightly faster to start up than mozilla. It renders man pages pretty good. It has cookies management and this little web browser / filemanager is better than IE / netscape or Mozilla. I really like the preview option for images. It makes life soooooo much easier. It has cookie management similar to that of mozilla with a differnet UI. Thus my favorite sites can set cookies and my least favorite cannot (doubleclick as well as others). All it needs now is ad blocking technology built in. Um, Network tv is dead in most areas, it's called cable tv now. And you pay for cable. Without cable in most of the places that I have lived you don't get GOOD tv reception if any (or you have satelite tv). The point is that only 5 channels or so broadcast purely network (ABC, UPN, WB, CBS, and NBC) and they don't usually have large antennas that reach every area. Now if you said radio I'd have to agree with you. However in the case of both TV and radio, neither of them are trying to collect data about the users the way that this company was. Yes there are the nelson ratings and things, but those are volunteers. Nor do they put ads where you have to see them. You cannot get up from your computer and go away and then when you come back the ads are gone, they are still there. Tv and radio you change channels during commercials and then change back. Or you have picture in picture.

Giving people stuff for free and sending them ads is not going to be and isn't an effective business model. With programs like proxomotron (windows) which can filter web page ads and web page content including javascript src and iframe/ilayer, I can block ALL ads from a site. With mozilla I can also block images from certain sites as well as cookies f I choose. There is more tech like that coming which is going to make it difficult for sites to just collect data on there visitors. They'll need to rely just on http data, like IP address and user agent and stuff like that.
This company had to have been stupid if they thought they could get data from school kids. That is a BIG issue today and it is just not going to fly with parents. hey some web portols don't even allow people under 13 to join and get acounts. I am ammazed that they thought that they would even try to get info from students. If I were an IT admin at that school, I'd set up the systems that students use for surfing and what not, so that they could not submit this kind of data to begin with even if that meant coding a program that would block post operations (except to certain permitted sites like search engines google) at the firewall level. Yes that can be done it is just http header info.
maybe web sites need a rating system. Like a meta tag that says
meta name=rating content=r
Then if people used this then you could filter out sites that are r rated like porn or maybe content=porn would be more appropriate.

If you know how to code and you get the proper tools you can debug your code real easily in C. Apache is done in C so if it is good enough for a web server then it is good enough for a web application as well.
TCl is also used in Story Server and that program sucks. It is slow, it is not scalable, it forks processes as does ASP each time you go out of the . There are much better and faster things that tcl.

The difference here is that Linux is available and has been usable for computer geeks for over 4 years. I've been using it since 96. The hurd still does not have an easy install of itself.
If they want to attract developers or users or anything, then someone needs to make it easy to install. Like there needs to be a hurd distribution.

Okay maybe not. I have used ASP, and I did not find it all that. I have used PHP, and I liked it better than ASP, but I find both a bit slow and 'limiting'. ASP is usually done in VBScript, so if you have had any experience with Excel or Word Macros then you would feel right at home.
I think perl is actually better, but for true speed I'd use C.
I have heard of JSP servers going down when the garbage collection suddently kicks in. Think of a busy web server that does not have time to do its garbage collection. At some point it needs to do so and when it does, everything else stop or slows. This is just a part of Java though. It happens in any one of these languages that the authors mentioned too. Perl is better about garbage collection I think than Java, at least in my experience with the two.
DON'T use tcl, or you will regret it.

Why do you people keep just blindly upgrading your systems every time that a new distribution version comes out? Why can't you just download the packages that you need or want to upgrade and then install just thouse. Personally I am tired of blindly upgrading cause I want to have this or that software.
I know that I want some of the packages from redhat 7.0 or maybe mandrake 7.2 but I am not going to go through the hastle of upgrading the entire system, reconfiguring every package from apache to sendmail all over agian (I'm smart I save config files that I modify do you?).
If kde is all you want then why not just upgrade to rpm 4.0 then upgrade glibc and the kernel and then upgrade qt and kde. It is an rp0m system so you should be gien a list of dependancies that you need to upgrade. I find that upgrading just the packages that I want to and the ones that they depend on that I am much happier this way. I don't need to upgrade everything there is no reason to.
I think that rpm is lacking in a few areas. And someone mentioned apt-get, I think debain is lacking a ease of install so don't even go there!

It may have been microsoft, maybe they staged an attack against themself. After all who has more to gain by hurting the open source movement than them? If you think about this for a minute it was only last week if not this week that wine was running word and excel 2000. If M$ says that someone stole there code and the FBI believes them then this could directly hurt the wine project. This and the fact that they bought into Corel so they could undermine the linux wine movement.
I know maybe this sounds a little parynoid, but with the past history of this company I think that anything is possible with them. They are a moralless company that sees nothing but there profits. They say that they listen to there users and that there users want more features and don't care about security. That is a load and they know it.
On another hand, if Microsoft cannot secure there OWN software system and there network security is that crapy, do you really wnt ot be runnign that software? That is a BIG issue today and it is just not going to fly with parents. hey some web portols don't even allow people under 13 to join and get acounts. I am ammazed that they thought that they would even try to get info from students. If I were an IT admin at that school, I'd set up the systems that students use for surfing and what not, so that they could not submit this kind of data to begin with even if that meant coding a program that would block post operations (except to certain permitted sites like search engines google) at the firewall level. Yes that can be done it is just http header info.
maybe web sites need a rating system. Like a meta tag that says
Then if people used this then you could filter out sites that are r rated like porn or maybe content=porn would be more appropriate.I don't want a lot, I just want it all!

TCl is also used in Story Server and that program sucks. It is slow, it is not scalable, it forks processes as does ASP each time you go out of the . There are much better and faster things that tcl.

I mean really who leaves the source code to the OS connected to a system that is connected to the internet. Oh that's right they created that pptp crap and forgot to put security in in.
