At will is different than NOT telling. Where I work we have 'at will', but they have to tell tyou that you are fired. If they do not tell you and you continue to show up to work, you are legally still employed, so they MUST pay you. You can take legal action against the company, but more important it to make sure that the management of that company is never allowed to be a manager again.
I don't want a lot, I just want it all!

But back to the post, I'd be suing the management. Not for money, but to make sure that they were not allowed to be managers again after decisions like that. Next I'd contact a laywer unless I have a legal friend (I do) and ask them what I could do.

I think we'll probably be unlucky and not see mozilla 1.0 till 2002. Oh well it can only get better. Someone mentioned to me the other day that Mozilla has over 2Million lines of code. FYI that is as many as there are the the Linux kernel tree. It was a 63 meg cvs checkout.
WOW. I like what the browser does, but it would be real nice if it was not so big.
konqueror crashes to much or it does not render allpages corectly.
Netscape 4.. well lets not go there.
It will be so nice to see a good browser for UNIX. On that will run fast on a low spped pentium (133 or so) with a little memory footprint (32Meg even though I have more). One that renders HTML 4.0, CSS 1 & 2, DOM, ECMA Script. This is a VERY good read, and anyone who has questions about patents and what is and isn't patentable should have a look. It does help explain why some patents get issues that shouldn't. I wont quote him, but as a former patent evxaminer myself, he left out one little detail. Patent examiners are NOT always experts in their field. Many come out of college and some come from fields where you would not think of them as technical or 'computer savy'. I worked in displays and input devices. Before the patent office I never did anything with a display except use it to watch tv adn plug in a monitor. Some examiners couldn't even plug in a monitor and many had to go through mandatory trainging classes on how to use windows. Come on, if you cannot use windows how the hell are you going to understand network caching or distributed processing and complex computer algorythms, and programming. They are for the most part just a bunch of trained monkeys, with no real knowledgs (not all but most).
The patent office really needs to go to a more 'open patent system' . Some way of involving the actual experts, just like the lawyers that are going for the patens do. There should be people that these patent examiners can contact so that they can ask questions. People OUTSIDE the USPTO or any patent office. People at colleges and such..

The reality is that you are getting lots of software at a great price. Even if you pay $80 (Redhat delux) for a distribution, you get server software for ftp, http, telnet, maybe ssh, finger, etc, as well as office tools, like Star Office (okay here is bloat), and you also get multiple window managers.
Now how much would you pay for ALL that and windows NT? hmm lets see NT 4.0 ~$289 full version, you get one window manager, NO server software and NO office app. MS office add atleast another $300, server software could be over $1000. Hmm I know tough choice here.....

is worth 1000 words. Or so some say. I always like screen shots. In fact I am less likely to download a program if i don't know what it looks like. Lets face it if you are using Linux you probably have your desktop all customized or maybe your a minimilst, and if this new app ads some look you don't like then you probably wont keep it. With screenshots you can see what it looks like. However do not put screen shots on your front door, put them as links so those who want to see them can and those that do not don't have to. The other thing I like about screen shots is that they give me an idea of what features the program has.
Example: Someone writes an HTML editor. If there are screen shots I can see if it is just a syntax highlighter or if it is a editor like Frontpage or Composer. If there are lots of them then I can see what features it has and how they define there UI.
This can even work with console apps that output data, like vmstat, where you can see what data it outputs.
Source Code: To me that is less importatnt. If it is in alpha I'd rather see a screen shot so I can see what is coming. Even after it is released I don't always compile from source. Rarely do I do that now. It usually offeres little benifits to compile from source and more headaches. If I find a bug then I'd likely email the author. This also depends on the size of the program and my time. When I used to have more time then I'd do more looking into the code, but now, I do less of that. I also have less problems.

And I am not talking about opening up a command prompt in windows, but actually starting your computer in DOS and then doing everything in DOS.

I guess what I am wondering is what are the project priorities. Okay you can run windows NT and QNX, or atleast boot them. But what are the priorities of this project? Is speed and performance the number one goal or is that secondary? More to teh point when the project is completed is you need a 1000Mhz computer to run plex86 or will a 200Mhz do? Do you plan on implementing enough so that the mouse will also work, or is the mouse the last concern?
I think that it is great that you are planing on doing an open source VM, but so far the project looks like the bochs and performs about as well.

Which is what this is going to do to the internet. What good is it going to do to get a faster line when all that is going to come through is faster garbage. Do you really want more advertisements? Probably not. I know I don't.
It seems that people do not realize that things like this are going to hurt broadband access.
This will probably stop spinner.com from being a free service. It may eng up going subscription to make up the costs rather than more ads. Other services may follow suit. There is already talk about portols like yahoo going subscription too. For some of there services.
So after you pay for your ISP, and in some countries your phone connection, you'll have to pay to access any of the services on the internet through some sort of ASP. All thouse things you used to get for free you'll have to pay for. This is probably what they are going for. Lets face it on the internet advertising just does not work to make up the money. Many business that are relying on this as sole income are failing. Radios and TV it works cause usually they are charging a lot more money than banner ads. A typical banner ad is like 100000 impressions for 2 to 5 dollars where as 1 commercial during prime time will cost 1000000 (maybe not that much but if you are intelligent you'll get the point).
So what does this have to do with paying to broadcast over the internet. It will make it less viable a service. We all have radios (well most of us at least) so you'll use your radio or cable access to hear music when you want to.
I do , at work listen to netscape radio, but if they add more commericals or less channels or make it subscriptions I think I'll bruing a radio to work. They are cheep these days like 10 USD.....

Lets face it. The desktop is good for now, but OS X is not really bringing anything new into the arena. Sure they are makeing OS X run with protected memory and some other features. They are improving the GUI (some may think otherwise), but they are still where they were back when they started. You still have icons, a mouse, and applications, that do the same thing they used to with a few more bells and whistles.
I think that the GUI is going to need to take another leap and a few bounds, before it actually improves. What OS X really needs to introduce is voice input. Mac has always had great graphics capability. They are showing commercials that show how easy it is to hook a video camera to the system. They need to push some kind of easy to use send mom the video campaign. I started sending my relatives mp3s of me talking to them already rather than a typee letter. Sure they are larger, but it si almost like a one sided phone call. The technology is here and a 1 meg donload over 56k is about 5 minutes, which is not that bad. If Mac could make this the NORM, then I think it it would be a leap in the right direction. If they could make it standard with voice input, even if it is as a side assistant then it would be real cool. Like prody parrot or something.
If nothing else Mac should introduce handwriting recognition devices as part of its top of the line machines.

I have used konqueror and it is nice. There are a few HTML tags that are not supported with the 2.0 release, but I am told that they are fixed or will be. In particular with the A:hover in style sheets, cnn.com and nbci.com use this.
It takes 18 seconds to start up if you are not running kde. This is on a 233 with 128Meg of RAM.
I really like using it as a file manager, as the icons are hot. It is a true alternative to windows explorer, and is probably as good at rendering pages as mozilla or netscape.
It lacks some plugins, and visiting cnet tv was diffucult if not impossible. Netscape 4.7 on Linux works best so far at that site (real video). I'll have to try the newest update. I'm sure there will be more as well.
I have had problems with fonts, but that may be X or my cahracterset or something.
Pages seem to render fairly fast even with a 56k modem.
Still pretty kewl though.

This is good as it will hopefully end the rpm is beter than dpkg or dpkg is better than rpm. Hopefully it will be adopted by other vendors other than Conectiva.
I think what is needed more than this though is an easier way to create rpms or 'packages' in general. Say I download a source.tar.gz file. I have no idea what files this will install or where. If it uses configure I may be able to pass it enough switches to install it in/tmp/test or something and then see what it installs, but if it does not than I am just guessing. It would be nice to use journeling file system and package installing to create a package management system that can actually install a tar file and keep track of what files were actually installed and where and then if need be remove the package, by moving back to a point before the package installation in the journal. If this is even possible. Windows is moving in a similar direction, where you can take a snapshot of the system and then go back to that point in time if something happens in your system. However you must take the snap shot, or configure it to automatically do so.

I'd have to agree with you. I have been running Netscape 6.0 at home and at work and on a windows box and on a linux box. The linux boxes are a PII 400 with 172Meg, and Dual P233 with 128Meg of RAM. On the PII 400 it does not run that bad. The windows box is a PII 5000 with 196Meg of RAM. Yes it starts up slow, but it renders pages pretty fast. yes it does need some work, but I like the fact that it now is MORE standards compliant than most other browsers and this includes Mozilla and konquereor and opera. At some style sheets to your pages, or better yet go view home.nbci.com and see what happens under Netscape 6 when you move your mouse over the links. Netscape 6 and IE whill change colors from blue to red on all the links, Mozilla M18 and konquereor WONT!
It is not just that netscape supports a:hover as part of the style sheets it is that it supports better style sheets than most other browsers.
What the author fails to tell you about the download is yes it is 30 megs but about 20 of them are the JVM.
When you consider that today we have machines that are over 1GigHz, and that having 256 megs of RAM is not that impossible, then Netscape 6 not bad.
Lets take a look at some modern programs. Mac OS X 64Meg to install. Windows 2k 64Meg to install (afaik). KDE was not a small download. Neither is X. Granted they do more, but Netscape 6.0 supports many standards. Netscape isnot targeting those with old 486 or old Pentiums, they are targeting the AOL 6.0 market. At some point maybe AOL 7.0 they will include this beast. Hey my sister just got an 800Mhz machine from Gateway. This is more of a modern day standard than a k6-2 with 32Meg. Who has 32Megs on a machine today and plays quakeIII?
Get real and stop bnashing netscape.

Uh, news flash this guy is behind the times. The distributions are already in some sense binary none compatible. That is one of the reasons why the LSB was formed.
I think that today they are more compatible than two years ago. However if you look at any two distributions it does not take a rocket scientist to figure that they are binary none compatible. Differnet libraries exist in each distro. Each program can be compiled against different version of the libraries with different parameters adn settings (configure --what options you pick). That is why Linux is Open Source and you get the source. You then compile the program yourself. This then becomes a none issue. So what? So I cannot take a binary from SuSE and install in Redhat. I can still build the rpm myself or get the tar ball. It's not that difficult.

Hey we also have servers like www1.servername.com anyway, that is hidden behind a VIP (Virtual IP) so what's the real benifit of this? Are you more prone to remember a name or a number?

I thought all this complaining about Redhat would be over. So they shipped RH 7.0 the way it is. I know plenty of people who are using it, not recompiling there kernel, installing binaries and are happy with it. Hey it recognized my friends i8xx video card memory and all, which RH 6.2 did not. He installed it with no problems. He has been running it for a while too. I suggested he get the updates though.
Personally I am still usnig RH 6.2. I have the gnome helix updates. I have upgrade to rpm 3.0.5 and then to rpm 4.0 (as they suggest) I did have to rebuild the rpm database though that took a little time. I am also found kde 2.0 binaries for my system as well. So I get to run kde or gnome (I use gnome).
Wasn't this article out a month ago or was it just one like it? This sure has gotton them lots of attention though. Hmm maybe that is what they were after.
If you don't like what Redhat did get Mandrake. Mandrake always seems to take the latest version of Redhat and ad the updates and fixes to it anyway.

Not the memory requirements 64Meg of RAM.
If you are using an old P100 with 32Meg of RAM. Don't complain that it is slow. Read the hardware and software requirements first and DON'T complain.

I think what is needed more than this though is an easier way to create rpms or 'packages' in general. Say I download a source.tar.gz file. I have no idea what files this will install or where. If it uses configure I may be able to pass it enough switches to install it in /tmp/test or something and then see what it installs, but if it does not than I am just guessing.

You can also try pinging yahoo's mail servers.
Personally I think you kind of get what you pay for. I used to use hotmail at one point as I was doing lots of traveling. They LOST some of my email while upgrading there servers. They said sorry. I stopped using them.
Free email is not a lucritive busines. It makes its money through advertising. As you may have heard (or not) advertising on the web is not considered a lucritive business. Hey doubleclick took a hit this last quarter, and there stock was down. You're best bet is to talk to yahoo about a pay account. They have them and then no matter who you use as an ISP you can have access through an @ yahoo mailbox. The other option is to use another portol for free mail.
