  1. update Berkeley DB first on OpenDarwin.org Releases Darwin With Fixes · · Score: 2, Informative

Those instructions note that you'll get an error during "make test" because of the old, buggy version of Berkeley DB included with Mac OS X. If you plan on using perl's DB functionality, upgrade to a more recent version. You can either use fink ("fink install db41") to get 4.1.24, or compile from source (available here) to get 4.1.25. If you compile from source, you'll need to link /usr/local/BerkeleyDB->/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4. 1

I have a USB floppy drive from smartdisk. Access to HFS-formatted floppies is just fine. However, access to DOS-formatted floppies is abysmally slow. I've never timed it, but I'd guess 4-5 minutes to format a floppy in DOS.

Hmm... well, at least, the above was true under 10.1.5. Haven't tried 10.2 yet.

I was going to point out that the 20GB HDD in my iPod doesn't seem to have any problems, despite being dropped a few times, and slammed into doorways as I walked through with the iPod on my hip...
but then I remembered that the drive is usually not spinning. It only spins up when loading a new song (or songs) into its 32MB (?) of memory. The HDD on a camcorder would have to spin constantly when recording or playing back, but could spin down when either just viewing or even when taking pictures. With some cache memory, you could probably avoid the spin-up delay when starting to record. (i.e. data goes into cache until the HDD has spun up). Similarly, pictures could go in the cache until its full.

Well, if they are claiming the pictures are from SOHO, you can look at the data yourself. All data from SOHO is available to the public via an archive (I'm not going to link to it, find it yourself) -- you just have to generate the images! You'll need IDL (or other similar software) to analyze the FITS format files, but the data is there.
