  1. Re:Nice on Use BitTorrent To Verify, Clean Up Files · · Score: 5, Interesting

Okay, I had some AVI's and a bunch of them had issues. All I did was copy them out to a different directory, then find a GOOD torrent (with the same rips) then make sure the filenames match exactly. Chucked them in the directory and voila. It checks them all and uses what data it can that you already have and replaces the rest.

Done this with RAR archived stuff as well. (Multipart rars on torrents are retarded, but that's another issue entirely.)

Awesome idea. I've done this in the past with stuff. If a corrupt version was on one tracker, I'd save the files, get a new torrent and import the old files. Saves a lot of bandwidth wasting.

Fuck Metallica. I used to be a huge fan. "... And Justice For All" was a fantastic album, as was "Master of Puppets". Their black album thing was the start of the slide into crap.

Radiohead and NIN may have succeeded, but they never turned and bit the hand that fed them like Metallica did. If Metallica did a "pay what you want", I'd pay NOTHING and still download their album, just so I could have the pleasure of deleting it afterwards. If everyone did that, they'd go "Wow, we had 5 million downloads. Too bad we only made $12.50".

  13. Re:Ouch on Doctorow Tears Up ISP Contract Over Net Neutrality · · Score: 2, Interesting

I already do stop paying for services I consider a ripoff. For example I no longer have cable TV. The thing is, that 99.99999% are sheep who will continue paying because they're too gutless or apathetic to make a stand. And with Doctrow, he is practically a cult leader, which means yeah, the people who "follow" him do follow EVERYTHING he says.

And the fact is stuff I'VE written has made it onto the front page of Slashdot, so that's not really a high watermark of recognition. It's just that the choir Doctrow preaches too are a subcommunity of Slashdot essentially.

Yes, a handful of people may very well shake their fists and tell Virgin to shove it. Good on 'em. I'm all for taking a stand. (The list of companies and services I boycott is quite long. I know it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to the company. I have no delusions.) I doubt that number would equate to more than 0.0001% of their total customer base. And the fact is getting rid of the trouble makers is GOOD for Virgin, because then they won't continue complaining in public forums about the issue, because it no longer effects them. The storm in a teacup will pass, and Virgin will quietly go back to coming up with new and interesting ways of ripping off their customers.

It may be lost revenue, but if down the road, losing the trouble makers means Virgin can slide in a price increase, bandwidth cap, or any other of a million things to increase revenue without a Cory Doctrow to whine about it, they'll ultimately earn more money down the road anyway.

And really, the drop in the ocean of the few people who may leave because of him is minimal. Not even a blip. Doctrow's proclamation is hardly likely to make Virgin's stock plummet tomorrow is it. Until a boycott or termination of services reaches that level, it's pointless, sadly. Companies answer to their stock holders and that's it. If the stock price isn't hurt, Doctrow is a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing, and Virgin won't give a damn.

I'm all for bringing attention to the attitudes in the industry to net neutrality etc... But pushing Doctrow's opinion is like betting your money on a Trabant in the Dakar rally, or for San Marino to win the next World Cup. (Reference chosen specifically due to Doctrow's attitude to football.)

Nope. Wrong. I watch Japanese baseball. Clearly a top league, or MLB wouldn't be stealing their best players. I watch minor league baseball too. I don't watch MLB due to the asinine commentary I have to suffer (at least Nippon League I can't understand a word), as well as the fact it's utterly corrupt and run by an asshole. To be quite honest, if I could watch MLB without commentary or commercials, I'd watch it religiously.

The guys plugging away in the minors and non-MLB affiliated leagues are where the REAL baseball is, where it's driven by love for the sport rather than money. I also love old baseball. Gimme a recording of a 1935 radio broadcast over ES-fucking-PN's baseball coverage any day of the week.

Working on your logic, nobody watching the Negro leagues truly loved baseball, because they weren't watching the "top level". Watching sport as it's highest level has NOTHING whatsoever to do with whether you love a sport. I love motor racing. I wouldn't dare to say that because someone like Formula 3 but not Formula 1 they weren't a fan of the sport. Your's is one of the most retarded and ill-informed comments I've ever read on here. (And that's saying something.) In fact, if you ONLY watch MLB, then clearly you're an MLB fan, NOT a actual fan of BASEBALL itself. Yes, it's the top league, but given I live 3000 miles away from the nearest team in the majors, I have no allegiance to any team. I'd much rather watch my local team in the Pacific Coast League play than a bunch of guys who are paid more than I'll earn in the next decade, and who are interrupted every few minutes to sell me shit I don't need.

In fact I am in awe at your arrogance. Yeah, I love the stats. If loving stats wasn't socially acceptable, Bill James wouldn't be a very rich man. Not to mention that I'm a grown adult and have long since stopped giving a shit about whether something is socially acceptable. For christs sake we're talking stats, not pedophilia. You think I honestly give a shit if anyone thinks I'm a geek? I wear it as a badge of fucking honour my friend.

Your comment is idiotic, short sighted and ridiculous.

Most geeks find baseball deathly boring. In fact some think themselves morally superior because they don't watch competitive sports, which is of course a very stupid attitude.

What's sad is the fact that baseball is the ULTIMATE geek sport due to sheer volume of stats it produces. I adore baseball. The SPORT of baseball. I don't actually watch MLB, but thanks to the magic of the internets I can watch Nippon League etc... Plus I enjoy looking at historic stuff, plus I have a variety of baseball sims. In fact I could go and replicate this experiment quite easily, and in engines that would be probably produce more statistically accurate data.

The fact that folk on here probably look like a dog that's been shown a card trick when you start talking about the dead ball era, and had modded up a completely WRONG post doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Baseball gets very little respect unfortunately.

I remember in particular Fox Sports had a ton of compression artifacts, whereas more popular channels had none. In fact the artifacts were so bad they rendered any sports damn near unwatchable due to the quick camera movement.

I don't even have TV anymore. Dumped it back last year, which means in the last five years, I've had no cable for three of them. Do I miss it? Nope.

I'm curious as to why he's allowed to put the remix albums up, but not the regular tracks. I guess the remix albums have different ownership status or something. Since I would assume, if he was legally allowed, he'd put up the regular albums. (Since I would assume he gets very little from their sales, especially now he's done with the labels.) Regardless, what he HAS put up is, if you're a huge NIN fan like I am, is absolute gold. I've downloaded every single file Trent has put up and have a nice playlist in iTunes of it all. JOY!

You were obviously one of the lucky ones with the download. I got my FLAC download finally last night. Support actually sent me the DIRECT LINK to the file! Talk about trusting!

So ultimately, with torrents I grabbed as the site didn't work, and finally getting the issues sorted, I have the album in MP3, Apple Lossless AND FLAC. :) And the sad thing is I'll probably burn all three to a DVD.
