There's also the new protection from Macrovision that some games (Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries for example) use that install a program that monitors what you burn to CD, and has been reported to destroy your ability to burn *ANY* CD in some cases. It's nasty. It runs as a service in XP (look for C-Dilla in the services... Macrovision bought C-Dilla), and if you get rid of it, delete the files it installs, it reinstalls the next time you run the software UNLESS you run it as a limited user. (Of course, doing that means you can't save your config in the game.) If you delete the DLL in the game directory that it calls, the game then won't load.
The companies have become so hellbent on stopping piracy (which their techniques don't. Don't believe me? Check IRC sometime) that they no longer seem to care about fucking over the legit consumer. (Witness the number of problems people have with SecuROM and Safedisc "protected" titles.) All they do with these routines is stop the casual copier, but everyone I know just downloads the titles anyway. I can't remember the last time anybody I know engaged in "casual copying". Macrovision and Sony (they created SecuROM) have pulled the biggest scam ever on the software companies by persuading them to pay for their crappy "protection".
Side note: Always amuses me in the warez groups.nfo files where they tell you what the protection was:)
Yes I know you're a stupid troll, but the people themselves are INUITS. Eskimo is considered the derogatory term.
As for Intuit being sued, FUCKING A! The new system they use is terrible, not to mention potentially dangerous to the system (writing to the boot sector of the drive). Hope the shits get sued out of business.
Even if they don't, they've upset a hell of a lot of people.
Have you read the book? The Australian authorities appeared to be by far the most heavy handed involved. Thus the AFP aren't exactly renowned for their wise and steady policing.
"Hmm... Shall we catch murderers, rapists and child molestors today? Nah, fuck it, we'll spend the tax payers money to arrest some teen who downloaded the new Britney album... That will be please our corporate sponsors."
Face it, these days, law enforcement are little more than pimps.
Correct. I know a Java developer who has a database program (for baseball stats). Sun released a MINOR revision to the JDK, and it broke the program completely. I think it was the switch from 1.4.2 to the next from that. (Or maybe 1.4.1. to 1.4.2, I forget).
Not a good sign for a language when a minor revision breaks peoples programs.
But the courts barely did anything to Microsoft. No breakup... They effectively won.
My guess: MS will completely ignore the request. They would never in a million years give their "rival" a boost like that, so silence or denial are the only options, and in this case, silence is the best response from the MS standpoint. No bad press for denying it. Sure, communities like this will be tear them a new one, but overall, if MS ignore it, it will, sadly, go away.
Given how financially fucked I am, I would GLADLY work for an evil company currently. Sure, having morals and ethics is nice. But so is having electricity and gas...
Do you not own the DVD? If you don't, I'm afraid I have to ask you to turn in your geek membership card. And your decoder ring. Someone will be around to collect your Linux disks in a few days. Please do not attempt to fight them. They are well trained, and know (of) several martial arts.
Thank God, I'm not an American. I don't know anyone willing to sit through 4 hours of "Pre-Game", 3 hours of the game, then another 2 hours of "Post-Game Wrap-up".
I'm sure there are some sad bastards who sit through the whole pre-game. My Superbowl watching went thusly:
12.10(MST): Turn on pre-game show. 12.15: Turn pre-game show off because it's unbelievably dull. 4.00: Turn TV back on. Catch Arnie asking if I'm ready for some football. Decide I am. Sit down. Half Time: Get up, start cooking dinner, in between stirring and mixing, check out Shania Twain's breasts. Nice. Second Half: Realise this is the dullest Superbowl I've ever seen. 8.15: Game ends. Sweet merciful Zeus. No win situation. If I'd have tuned out, Oakland would have staged the come back of all time. As it was, I got to see Tampa (the team I wanted to win) slaugher the Oakland team. Sweet. 8.30: Bon Jovi appear on my screen and starting singing something. 8.31: Go to kitchen and stab self in eyes so never have to see Bon Jovi again.
Did I wish death on *ANYONE* in my post? No, I did not. I merely stated that, while inflammatory, I could see the original posters point. Violence begats violence.
If you look closely at the Matrix trailer, you can see the shots are not fully finished. The shot near the beginning of Smith flying through the air above Neo, if you pause it, Neo is CG and looks like something from Toy Story. Same with the agent hitting the car.
Freedom? Have you noticed how many of these "freedoms" are being taken from you now?
I'd rather go to hell than be "defended" by the US Armed Forces.
Why did they not send up the fireworks as the planes went over the Superbowl today? Because the speed addicted pilots (FACT: The US Govt. gives it's pilots amphetamines) would probably think it was an attack and wipe out a couple of thousand football fans.
I think Iraq isn't considered what most people consider democratic. Yes supposedly 100% of people voted for Saddam
Actually, they had a recount and found 103% had voted for him.
Seriously. I'm not making this up.
Christ, this fucking flood control is PAINFUL! For Christs sake Taco, LEARN TO CONFIGURE THESE BLOODY THINGS SO PEOPLE WITH A TYPING SPEED ABOVE THAT OF A CRIPPLED TORTOISE CAN POST WITHOUT SITTING AROUND FOR FUCKING AGES.
Why is it, when some says something mildly inflammatory, people break out the "beating off to porn in your parents basement" line, or something similar?
I know people who've died in wars. A friend when I was at school, his Dad died in the Falklands war. That's the price of war. Soldiers die. While the post was a troll, I can partly understand the comment. Get the warmongering fuckwits out and killed and perhaps we may know peace in our time.

Your point being?

Wouldn't be the first time the AFP have overreacted.
Just got done reading this. When it comes to computer "crime" they do seem to have the approach of trying to swat an ant with a sledgehammer.
They're also a bunch of racist bastards if the book is to be believed.
Not to mention that Australia was the country that actually admitted it exists.
Cool. I have every single player Myth addon ever created that was linked on The Mill. Rarely used the multiplayer stuff though.
Now THAT I can believe (all of it:))
Except WC3 is 3D and you can take the camera down to ground level, and swing it around within 180 degrees.
Looking at the screenshots, hate to say it but it looks pretty pathetic.
Of course, the WC3 ones aren't that great either. Probably the best game to do this huge scale in is Medieval: Total War.
None of the three recognize Gnutella2 as true Gnutella
Jesus... GROW UP! Way to speak like politicians...
Don't like WW2.
Rarely saw people playing anything other than the included maps on Bungie Net.
There was no way to get 21 wights in multiplayer (barring using a specially created map)

Computer: $1000
Broadband Internet: $40
Replying 4 days after the previous post: Priceless.
That's dedication!
Now THAT is a clever one. First decent one so far...
Even though I'm not in the US, I'm gonna be signing up for these!
Given how financially fucked I am, I would GLADLY work for an evil company currently. Sure, having morals and ethics is nice. But so is having electricity and gas...
I'm sure the people who seem to keep throwing this fact out are intellectual types and didn't, say, learn it from the UHF commentary track.
