I see people are taking me too literally. MMX/SSE aside, Intel has always increased clock speed by increasing the transistor count on their chips. All of this is pretty much moot anyway for the simple reason that although the 18-month transistor/speed doubling rule has remained constant, R&D budgets have doubled at exactly the same rate. Eventually, there simply won't be enough money to perform this kind of magic without dumping the whole x86/CISC architecture.
Moore's law has been dead for quite a while. The 3.2ghz came out over 18 months ago and we still haven't reached 4.0ghz, let alone 6.4ghz. And, no, gluing two p4/3.2ghz processesors together is not at all the same thing.
The passion around the whole Transfan culture gives me the creeps. These guys make S&M Klingon cosplayers look well-adjusted. I particularly like Tom Franck's take on the lot (scroll down to "NEW GEEK HIERARCHY"). I guess I'll never understand the culture of worshipping toy commericials. Now worshipping TOYS I can understand...:)
I was at the last System Builder, and the reason that Microsoft didn't show up this time is because LAST time they were there they were boo'ed off the stage. Vendors were _extremely_ upset by the pricing that MS offers Dell for their Windows/Office bundle (about $175, versus, $450 for anyone else). It was so bad that the spokesperson could barely get a few words in before being shouted down. They eventually had to leave the stage...
