Honestly I don't think VeriSign will stop this "service" because of public pressure alone. I used to have my domains registered at VeriSign but I was tired of never being able to get a password for the web administrative interface.
VeriSign is a great service if you're not planning on making any changes to your domain information. A few years ago I needed to update my name. VeriSign "offered" (the free version was in small print and out of the way) the service to have my name change rushed for over $100.
I suspect ICANN is stepping in due to public pressure, not VeriSign.
I've been gaming for about 4 years now. I didn't get into gaming until I was in college. Honestly, my parents didn't encourage gaming that much. I don't think they discussed the possiblity of buying me a game console when I was a kid.
Am I into different games than male gamers? Maybe, maybe not. I'd like to think my gender has very little to do with the type of games I prefer.
I have to admit that I do use male sounding names on gaming servers. I really hate joining a game and being distracted by some 13 year old's sexist comments. But on the same token if I'm kicking some 13 year old's ass and he's making stupid comments, I will inform him that a woman is kicking his sorry ass.
I am a little disappointed that one of the articles talked about gaming as a way to help women date. I also happen to be an IT professional, and the thought of dating or marrying an IT professional did not factor into my decision to pursue a career in computing. I'd like to think that the fact I love math, puzzles and logic had some influence in my decision. So I'd like to think I game because gaming is a great form of entertainment.
I'm happy to hear some allowed us to enable Sendmail. I know there are other SMTP servers out there (Postfix), but Sendmail is not a horrible mail server. Yes, there are bugs (any product that is used will have bugs reported eventually). Now, Exchange server.... that's a horrible mail server.
The best part about this news is that it gives Mac users more options. Regardless if you like a project or not, the ability to choose between server products helps advance the Apple server platform.
Honestly, I find meditation and yoga relaxing. However I think everyone is wired differently. Yoga may be relaxing for me, but someone else it may be pure torture. Also, if someone goes in with the attitude that yoga and meditation are "silly and childish", that person is most likely going to gain nothing from the experience.
I do think employers should put some effort into treating their employees with respect and dignity. The workplace is as stressful as your employer wants it to be.
At my current position, I'm a contractor. The company I'm contracted has rules like "contractors cannot participate in birthday celebrations." At the last company I was contracted to, they had a more friendly attitude toward contractors. Even including us in company wide events and including us in company wide discount programs.
No, going by ID's track record with releasing Mac releases, I probably won't be able to buy a Mac version of Doom 3 until 2005. Maybe I should plan on buying it to celebrate finishing grad school.
Throughout most of the posts there are so many stereotypes about women just being assumed as fact. There are lots of women out there with previous computer experience before even walking in a cs classroom. Before I took the *wonderful* required Introduction to CS at my college, I already had experience in web authoring, building computers and programming. And the reason I'm into computers other than something like English is because I enjoy working on new problems and am techinal minded.
For example, my fiance and I are working on a mail client. Who's doing 90% of the coding? I am. Why? I can program better than him. Gender has nothing to do with that. He's just into different aspects of computers.
As far as the enviroment of computer science being hostile to women. I've personally experienced out right hostility (like some of the posts), but also I've met a lot of people who don't care what race or gender you are, just that you can do the job.
Also women aren't going into computer science because they see a table of geeks and run the other way. The only person I've ever met that chose a major based on if his or her friends were in that one, was a man. Does that mean now that men just briefly think about their majors and don't give it any thought?
Comments like "women don't know anything about computers" or "women are genetically incapable of working in techinal fields" just show to me that some people out there just don't get it. Women weren't originally allowed to go to college because our brains were too "small." Yet Albert Einstein had one of the smallest, compact brains ever recorded.
Apparently this individual has never worked on a 500 dollar PC. I personally own both mac's and pc's, which each one has their own strengths and weaknesses. But claiming a 500 pos e-machine is like an iMac? I have tech supported both. Every, I mean every, 500 dollar pc that I have tech supported has already been replaced or in the shop. I once tech supported someone who was still waiting on a replacement cd-rom drive for their wonderful "computer for 4 months, but considering the pc was 4 months old, that says a lot about 500 dollars pc's. I have never never had a problem with an iMac. They may not be the fastest computer out, but they are much more stable than any of these cheap pc's.

One of the apparently rare women in computers.
