  1. I would be worried if... on Spectrum Wars: The Hidden Battle · · Score: 0

    TV was actually worth anything...

I mean, come on...I'm at my girl friends appt in west BY GOD Virginia, she's got 500 channels and there isn't a DAMN THING WORTH WATCHING for about 23 hours out of any given day.

and HDTV? do you really think joe sixpack is gonna notice the difference? That's like joe sixpack being able to pick out conversion artifacts on a 128m MP3. It doesn't happen.

Tech is a great thing...I love it to death, love watching it grow and spread. But there's a time when the new tech just isn't significantly better, or is looking for a different problem to solve than the one it gets crammed into. I mean, I could see getting a HDTV for console gaming, maybe...if they were less expensive.

I dunno, maybe thats just me :)

    Thank you.

I'm with ya on that one. I've got a similar setup.

Used to be, I had a stereo, and it would scratch up all my CDs something fierce, Which is why I gradually moved my music into MP3 becuase that way I could have it for as long as I wanted and not have to worry about physical media failing.

Thanks RIAA for making my decision for me as well! DOWN WITH CDs! :)

Yeah, well when I was 5-10 I sure as hell noticed. I NEVER liked anything by HB (at least as far as I recall)

Guess I was just lucky...was able to catch robotech on sunday mornings and voltron on weekday afternoons.

Of course, the all time worst cartoon may have to be the super mario brothers super show...sheesh.

OT - why on earth was I marked flamebait? I thought I expressed my distaste of all things HB rather politely...

-begin quote- As a Scottish girl used to the pleasures of my native Glasgow, I was very dissappointed in the variety of cuisine, nightlife and people here in Bangor, Maine when I first arrived. It seems that the melting pot is producing a terrible monoculture here in America! -end quote- ok, I see the problem...yer in MAINE! Try spending some time in NYC or DC if you want variety... Just a helpful tip :)

Actually, if you had a machine that made cheeseburgers out of nothing and cost you nothing and you DIDN'T allow everyone to have one, I'd call you a greedy asshole.

I mean, really. It was a poor analogy to start with, but if you don't share something that cost nothing to make, thats just being American (as said by another American) :)

  7. Clueless Users on Quality Control In Computer Companies · · Score: 1
You know, if these poeple would quit trying to use thier CD rom drives as cup holders, try to hot-swap thier modem cards in thier laptops, and quit speaking into thier mice, and actually bothered to LEARN enough about computers to be able to find drivers on the net and install them properly.

FACT - to most people, computers and networking are 'magic'

I'm not saying that some stricter QA methods aren't necessary in some computer industries (gaming!), but you always have to look at who's doing the complaining...I had one guy call me and tell me he couldn't get his web browser or his email to work over his phone line. Of course, he just connected the phone line to the computer...he didn't bother to log on to his ISP... -Demonix

  8. A counterpoint... on Is There REALLY an IT Worker Shortage in the US? · · Score: 1

And mind you, this is just personal experience, so take that as you will...

I recently go into this field at the ripe old age of 25. I do tech support work and data error tracking, so basically it's an extended help desk position. While reading this thread, I began to feel distinctly uneasy about my future in this field, until I remembered one thing:

I'm the youngest in my department!

Hell, my boss was hired only recently at the company (about 5 months before me) and he's old enough to be my father (mid-late 40s), one of the system analysts we hired is probably of an age with my mom, one of the coders could be my -grandfather-, he used to be a baker before he injured his leg, too!
(and man, he makes some of THE BEST cakes you would believe!)

I think we all need to step back and realize that there are a lot of shit companies out there who'll take all they can get. We just have to stand up for ourselves and put our foot down AT THE FIRST SIGN of anything resembling unfair work practices.
As I've noticed here (long time lurker), we have a great tendency to discuss at length our problems but we never seem to be able to motivate to do anything. Well, it's time to do something.

  9. say what you want... on What Does the Audio Home Recording Act Really Allow? · · Score: 1

You know, they can go ahead an say what they want about MP3s and recording and what exactly constitutes fair use. after all, you're only breaking the law if you get caught...and if they think they can nail every MP3 user they have another thing coming. we may lose napster, just means we have to go back to FTP...big deal? napster keeps timing out on me anyway... -grumbles- besides, if i like the band, i buy thier CD. If i don't like em, i don't. no wonder i havent bought nay new CDs...all that new stuff is crap out there...
