I think we can thank our lucky stars that MS wasn't at all involved in the hardware side of things
Wrong! The best things to ever come out of Microsoft are their mice, keyboards and joysticks. They should stick to hardware and forget about software entirely!!
Yes, it is a porn site, and there is a link at the bottom "Click Here to Buy This Domain", obviously a squatter. The site doesn't seem to work in Konqueror, though, so I couldn't explore more.
The difference between building a bridge and buildig software is that when your building a bridge, you have blue prints to follow. Too often in software developement the planning and implementation happen at the same time. If the proper planning is done before hand, you can get a pretty good estimate of how long the project will take to implement.
X isn't the problem in bringing Linux to the main stream. I'm using KDE, it's very close to being as good as Windows 2000 GUI, and better in some respects. The problem with Linux is the administration required.. A non-techie will never figure out the mess that is/etc. Until there are applets and/or wizards for every single file in/etc, Linux will not be ready for prime time.
What we need to do is start a project which will create these applets, with a consistant look and feel, which will appear in a control panel when an app is installed.
Yep, I had a similar incident playing Doom when I got my first sound card.. I was wondering around a level for quite a while looking for secrets, I thought I had killed everything. I ran down some stiars and came face to face with one of those big pink pig-like demons... First time I ever screamed out loud playing a game!
I used to be an AS/400 computer operator working the night shift. We had an IBM 3130 printer in the computer room. This printer, after being idle for several hours, would somtimes make thumping noises for no reason. When your at a new job, in an empty office building at 4:00am and you hear strange thumping noises coming from the corner of the room, it'll freak you out!
There has been one or two occasions, late at night while coding, that I thought I saw someone standing behind me reflected in my monitor. When that stats happening it's time for bed!!
Actually one thing I've thought of but never tried is to make several small swap partitions, maybe one per drive (I don't think it would make sense to have multiple swap partitions on one drive). In theory, synchronized reads from the different drives should speed the system up. Anyone know if this is true?
Were you there in the "good old days"? There was WWW, gopher, ftp, nntp, archie, email, and others... You needed a seperate program for each service. It took a while before the old web browsers could access these services (Mosiac was one I remember).
I'm not a network expert, but I believe if you have 2 NIC's with the same MAC Address, it will confuse your routers. I guess this applies more to large WANs than home users, but in any case, no two devices on any network should have the same MAC.
This "bar to entry", the costs involved in getting started, are why I never learned to develope for Windows.. The tools are too expensive. When I descovered Linux, I was amazed at the quality of the compiler and dev tools, and was able to learn and practice coding without spending any money. Now I consider myself a resonable confident developer for Unix, but have no clue how to write a Windows app. If Microsoft wants to continue having lots of software, they should be doing whatever possible to attract new developers, not make them jump through hoops and spend lots of money.
Just wait until you can't access 80% of the Internet without a passport account. The next few years should prove to be very interesting.

I agree.. I am thinking of starting a project to build an Ultima III style game, but I wasn't sure if there would be much interest in it.. Anybody wanna get involved in something like this? I'm thinking pluggable modules (each module is a complete adventure), a good module editor, network play, etc.
The only small gotcha is that in order to publish it legally, some kind of access controll will have to be put in place so US citizens cannot get at the archive. Unfortunate, but so be it.
Please don't block by IP Address or domain name.. Many of us Canadians use American ISP's, such as @Home. Can you use some kind of honer system, such as "By clicking here you certify you are not an American citizen or are not inside the U.S." ?
I dual boot with Windows 2000 and Linux, my C: is NTFS. I use LILO as my boot loader, and don't have any problems (just don't let windows re-write your boot sector). Is this a feature of NT that it won't let you use LILO?
the reason for ext3 over resier is the ability to non-destructively upgrade an ext2 drive. with reiserfs, you have to format the drive, which means dataloss for those that can't just 'tar zcvf/dev/tape/'. i'm sure there are other reasons too, but for most people, that ability is important
Interesting.. I've already conversted some partitions to ReiserFS, but have been unable to change my root partition for this very reason. Maybe I can easily upgrade my root partition to Ext3. Has anyone tested ReiserFS and ext3 side by side on the same machine? In theory it should work, but these are new kernel modules that may not co-exist peacefully!
That's what the mute button is for, bud!
That would save a tonne of time searching for the good bits!
That is the key .. All our anti-terrorist measures prior to 9/11 assumed that the terrorists don't want to die. We can't assume that any more.

One common application is wireless barcode scanners and warehouse management devices.
Windows users do not deal with the registry, they use control panel.

You forgot to mention that people should start there posts with "This may be a troll..." or "Mod me down if you want..." ... Gauranteed Karma points.

Yeah, when I want a 3D deskop I just turn off my computer and look at my desk.

Haha, good one!

This is your brain...
This is your brain on Windows... X-P
I think you figured it out!
