Actually, it's even easier than that. The guide data comes down from the satellite, not over the phone. If you can find a way to make the DirecTivo think it has lifetime service, it just works.
MAME is available for the Zaurus. Whether or not it's a decent platform for it - that's debatable. The controls are all there (it has diagonals on the D-pad and multiple button presses are supported). The issue right now is speed of emulation - last time I tried the Z version of MAME I was unable to play alot of games at full speed. I'm not sure if this is a processor-speed limitation, or if the code just needs more optimization.
On the other hand, the NES emu works perfectly. I've had quite a few excellent games of Bubble Bobble on the subway lately (while listening to MP3's via XMMS)
SVCD is 480x480, and DVD (though it supports a few others) is generally 720x480.
Some players are happy to play 480x480 MPEG-2 video in DVD format. Others will show the video on 3/4 of the screen.
I've authored quite a few DVDs with 480x480 video from SVCD or DirecTivo, and they play fine in my Philips DVD711 standalone.
The only authoring software that I've used for this is SpruceUp - not available for purchase anymore but easily found on the net.
You'll need DVDPatcher to patch the first header of the MPEG to 720x480 before importing the videos - Spruce will crash at the end, just re-patch the header to 480x480 and import again.
The trusty Lucent/Agere Orinoco card, under Linux, can set MAC address with the standard 'ifconfig hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' command - note, this only works with newer versions of the orinoco driver.
A MAC hopper wouldn't work too well, considering you must take the interface down to set MAC (this would obviously de-associate you from the AP).
I recommend using Snax's patches to enable RF Monitor mode as well, for use with Kismet, an excellent passive 802.11b scanner.
True AP mode with Orinoco cards under Linux? Can't be done as far as I know. You must be in ad-hoc mode. FYI actual AP mode with an Orinoco can be done in Windows with the Lucent driver and some undocumented registry settings - for details look here
The only cards that will do actual Access Point mode under Linux are based on Prism2. The HostAP driver provides full AP mode including offloading WEP to the CPU (128 bit WEP on a 40 bit card!), MAC filtering, and lots of other fun stuff. Works beautifully. Check it out here
I'm so sick of hearing this - adding a video capture card and 'some software' will not give you a Tivo.
First of all, there is no software out there that gives Tivo any real competition. Yes, I've seen ShowShifter and the others, but honestly they don't compare. Their attempts at emulating Tivo's Wishlist and Trick Play functionality are lame at best.
The CPU power / memory required to do a relatively good quality software MPEG2 encode from analog source is quite high - and a dedicated high quality MPEG2 encoder like the standalone Tivo uses is rather expensive.
And when we start talking about the DirecTivo combo boxes, with dual tuners (record 2 shows AND watch a 3rd pre-recorded show), and lossless (direct satellite stream) recording, the comparison is even less appropriate.
Tivo (and ReplayTV, I guess - haven't played with one) are the only devices out there that provide this type of functionality, seamlessly. PC solutions just don't cut it.

Actually, that might be true for a Standalone Tivo, but the DirecTivo combo box captures the raw DirecTV stream, which is 480x480.
Furthur is an absolutely amazing piece of software. I've been in the Etree community since the beginning (I seeded the first PCP tree), and I've been waiting for something like this.
Trading FTP server addresses/logins on a mailing list always seemed sort of antiquated to me. There was always talk of creating a P2P program specifically for the Etree community, and I'm glad it's finally here and ready for prime time.
They call it a beta, and there are a few rough edges, but it's been running (and doing multiple simultaneous transfers) for the last 10 days on my machine without stopping.
Last I looked there were about 850 clients connected - I'm hoping after this story this number will jump and there'll be even more great music on the network.
There's an optical out on the back of my Philips DSR6000, it outputs PCM S/PDIF when you're watching normal TV, and Dolby Digital 5.1 on the channels I mentioned before.
You don't get the funky menu sounds via optical though.
I'd agree thats a steal, but not for the IDS - it's not even signature based, it's got some canned 'attacks' built in but there's no update facility.
On the other hand the personal firewall PGPnet includes has quite a flexible rule interface, and works really well. And the rest of the package is amazing.
I'm also concerned about the on-hold status of Gauntlet Firewall/VPN. A really good product that was just starting to get even better with the 6.0 release, and now it's future is very uncertain. Gauntlet's roots are in open source too, as it evolved from the Firewall Toolkit.

If you use SSH2 protocol and Public key authentication only, you're no longer vulnerable to the password-guessing or Monkey-in-the-middle attacks as they exist today.

Actually, DirecTV (non-HD) broadcasts Dolby Digital 5.1 signal on 7 or 8 channels (HBO, Starz, and Pay Per View movies).
The DirecTivo combo receiver will even record the 5.1 stream along with the movie, and play it back later!

What I was saying is: SSH2 + Public Key auth is not susceptible to MITM attacks.
Using SSH2 + Passwords is theoretically vulnerable to this attack, but the current tools (dsniff, etc) do not yet implement this.
If you use SSH2 protocol and Public key authentication only, you're no longer vulnerable to the password-guessing or Monkey-in-the-middle attacks as they exist today.
