I've been with my present employer since Oct. of 1999. Every time we have a meeting where we discuss ways to accomplish some task I waited for an opportunity to say, "I could write a shell script to do that" or "We could do that with a Linux box". Early on it always got a big laugh. Then my technical lead started saying, "We could do that with a shell script." Now they're asking questions about using Linux for server consolidation. Some things take time. Patience my young apprentice.

Sure you are. If you read that far down into the article you had to read about the technical guys who gladly would have installed snort but couldn't get it past the suits because it didn't come from a 'company'. In other words, he could have sold the product as-is. The problem was that so could anyone else. The GUI front end for the phb's, a preloaded box, all that is just differentiation (what makes us better than the other guys).

Right. And when doing a corporate website (or a website for anyone other than yourself) the goal is for you to express something of them and not of yourself. It's not the artist's vision that's important, but conveying the company's vision. If an artist wants to freely express themselves they can build their own page or submit pages to an art oriented site.

In order to accomplish this designers may have to constrain their creativity to work within certain parameters.

It could be said that the constraints actually give one an opportunity to exercise their creativity. If an individual can only work a certain way then they are stagnant and not creative at all.
