Whose job is it to set up all the timing, thumbnails, and notes so the overseas animator doesn't screw up? Layout artists and timers, working here in the US. Although they succeeded in exporting the actual animation jobs, they made the remaining jobs here much more valuable. There's not too much room for screwing up when getting a reshoot of a bad scene takes weeks - hence, timing* is a very important position.
Some possible equivalent jobs in the IT world (that survive outsourcing and maybe become more important) are "requirements gathering", "software architecture" and "integration".
Although any game company has a monopoly on a specific title, they don't have a monopoly in "things that provide entertainment", or in "software games", or in any "game genre" or even in "this year's greatest games in a specific genre"
Most people will NOT wake up one day and want to buy Diablo II and only Diablo II for whatever price.
In practice the game buying decision is more than a "I'll buy Diablo II!!!" and instead involves many questions such as (for example):
Would LOTR Special Edition DVD be a beter buy than a game?
Do i like this kind of game?
What do the reviews say?
Is there a cheaper game that is just as fun?
Would i rather save the money and just keep on playing the current game?
Naturally a component of the choice is the brand name ("Diablo II", "Coca-cola", "Levis", "Goucci", whatever). Even though some people will zoom in on the name and forget everything else, most (i hope) will not.
I'd like to see someone try to write a virus or worm that affects plain-text-only mail readers like Mutt. That would be a clever hack. I also suspect it'd be damn near impossible to pull off. How badly would you have to screw up something that displays plain text for a vulnerability to appear?
If it loads data into memory and it interprets some of it (mail headers) then it might have a buffer overflow problem.
A beter question is, whose going to go through the trouble of looking for a buffer overflow in mutt and designing a virus to exploit it (which would only spread between mutt users) when you can get the Windows/outlook virus du jour, change it and almost instantly "own" thousands of machines???
Hey buddy, fuck you! As a private citizen, if you choose to connect to my machine and choose to ask me if I have a given file and then choose to ask me to send that file to you, then I'll do whatever the fuck I want with your IP address and the information that you sent me.
You are correct (and also quite rude). This however only applies to information obtained when another users intentionaly connects to you machine (for example, using a P2P app).
The issue here is that it was the (downloaded) program that, unknown to the user (and thus without the user's permission), connected to a central machine. Furthermore, the program was developed specifically with that purpose and was being misrepresented (via a misleading name) as something else than what it really was (ie it was a Trojan). Information obtained in that way should not have been divulged, it shouldn't even have been gathered in the first place
Go for the full stereotype: - Bin Laden look complete with beard. - Turn to Mecca and pray right in the middle of check-in control (the hour is not really important, check-in control personnel won't know the right time either). - Address all security personnel as "infidel" or "decadent american", preferably in Arabic. - End all you sentences with "Allah Akhbar". (As in, "Here is my passport, officer. Allah Akhbar!" or "Where is the bathroom. Allah Akhbar!") - Carry around a big folder with the title "Whitehouse attack plan" in big red letters.
You'le breeze through check-in control. They'll probably think you're either nuts of some sort of anti-racism or freedom activist.
PS: Avoid at all costs to look like a real muslim - the will land you on the "Body-cavity-checks-R-us" department for sure. What you want to go for is the full blown, in all it's glory, stereotype.
5. When moving your computer remember there's a 3.5" drive mounting kit with a hard drive loose on the bottom of the case - DO NOT TURN THE CASE UPSIDE-DOWN.
> Someone's current chosen profession and it's ability to feed them or their family should not dictate my personal freedoms.
You mean, your freedom to use their copyrighted material without compensating them?
Actually, copyright is a protection extended by society to an author's intelectual works. The intention being to improve everybody's "wealth" by stimulating each person or groups of person's to be creative.
The other side of this is that intellectual property (incl copyright) is an artificial construct.
If we take that in account, then the reasoning of the original author can be read as: "I will not support [artificial] garantees of income to someone in any profession they choose if that limits my personal freedoms".
I both have a degree (in Electronics Engineering) and have been working in IT for the past 6 years. My experience with formal education has shown me the following:
Formal education teaching and evaluation methods relly upon and reward memorization. If you have a perfect memory or work hard at studying "the books" before a test you'll get great grades. Understanding the subject is often not really needed
Rarelly will imagination, creativity, intuition or other "soft" skills be rewarded. In my specific degree (a techie one), neither were organizational, social or interpersonal skills teached or rewarded.
It's important to have a degree when applying for a job in IT. It's not a requirement, but it visibly provides an advantage. Not having a degree in Computer Sciences doesn't seem to mater
After your first job, almost nobody will look at your school grades. During 6 years and 2 countries, after my first job only once was i asked for my university grades (and other things made me not to want to work there anyway)
Of all that i learned in the university, the only really useful thing is "how to learn" - that one has helped me countless times to rapidly learn the skills needed for the job at hand
Imagine that the turn-out for the next European Parliament elections was 10% And you were one of the ones did vote
Did you notice that your vote would count for you plus 9 of the people that didn't vote?
Maybe checking out which of UK's EU parliament members voted for this law and which voted against... and casting your vote accordingly would be worth it!??
The recursive solution is not the correct one for big linked lists.
Then again it took me 1 minute to come up with that one. Figuring out a solution with a while-loop and 3 pointers takes slightly more.
In the end, it all boils down to what the requirements are, and which are more important. In this case i considered "comming up with a simple solution fast" more important than "coming up with a scalable solution".
Good programmers plan before they write code, especially when there are pointers involved. For example, if you ask them to reverse a linked list, good candidates will always make a little drawing on the side and draw all the pointers and where they go. They have to. It is humanly impossible to write code to reverse a linked list without drawing little boxes with arrows between them. Bad programmers will start writing code right away.
2 words: Recursive function
It's stupidly simple and takes 2 pointers as parameters (one for in and one for out). What exactly is the need to make pretty pictures on the side?
If you're gonna follow the advices on the parent post, always keep in mind 2 things:
People with different ways of thinking might come up with solutions that are so orthogonal to the way you solve problems that it's almost impossible for you to evaluate those solutions
After one gains enough experience solving all kinds of problems in all kinds of situations, one begins to find that seamlessly different problems often have the same sort of solution
How much does one (in average) need to have invested in order to make as much money per year as if having a job?
Assume the following:
Average yearly growth trend on a properly diversified portfolio of stocks is 6% (i believe the NYSE 5 average year growth trend is about 5.4%)
Once a year, enough stocks are sold to get in cash the yearly profits
Sales taxes on stocks are not taken in account
If one aims at a bruto salary of $60000 year, that's 60000 / 0.6 = $1000000 (1 Million bucks )
If the taxes are the same on income and over selling of shares, it results in the same netto income.
So, you have to be a millionair already in order to earn from you stock portfolio the equivalent to a $60000 year salary.
And that's not even taking the higher risk in the stock portfolio into account (let's just say that you would party during half of the 90s and starve during half of the 00s)
I have to agree with your disagreement. At most one can say that Israel has pretty much trashed the Palestinian economy (Palestine has something like a 50% unemployement rate) and commited acts of terrorism against the Palestinians - "targeted assasinations" (done with Apache hellicopters and killing several passerbys), shootings teenagers throwing stones, razing whole neighbourhouds because they are "harboring terrorists" or to create security buffer zones around jewish colonats (make 10000 people homeless in their own land in order to "protect" 1500 "colonists")
The Israeli government has however NOT tried (even) any sort of ethnic cleansing.
I believe that the terrorist attacks by some Palestinian groups, using human-bombs, against innocent Israeli civilians are wrong.
I also believe that the terrorist attacks by the Israeli government, using troops, tanks and Apache helicopters against innocent Palestinian civilians are also wrong
In my view, a government that no mater what supports and defends one of thoses sides is at the very least deeply biased.
In my view a government that sells or provides money to one of the sides to aquire the instruments they use in attacking the civilians in the other side is criminal.
The US government has consistently given political support to the current Israeli government and provided rougly 3 billion dolars worth of military help to Israel per year. What are we (non-americans) expected to conlude from this?
My only hope is that saner minds in both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides can actually take control of the whole situation and bring this situation to an end (i believe the vast majority of Palestinians and Israelis would rather have peace than blow each other's brains out)
From the US Government i don't expect anything constructive - maybe a little posturing of displeasment with the Israeli government (the diplomatic equivalent of wiggling one's finger and saying "naughty boy") but not really the acts of a unbiased, neutral 3rd party.
After buying a milion cans of baked beans, a zillion beer cans and 10 years worth of Playboy magazines (only for historical purposes, of course) they waited it out for a couple of days in an underground bunker.
Since they didn't felt any shake, it was proven that the meteorite had missed the Earth.
It was further proven that a zillion cans of beer barely lasts a couple of days and that having a million cans of baked beans is pretty useless when you forgot to bring a can-opener
One thing of note is that somehow, 10 years worth of Playboy magazines disapeared without a trace.
Imagine a convention of morse code users. Everybody brings their own morse code sound producing device... It would probably sound as some cube farms out there...
Now, if you could dematerialized said truck in one place and rematerialize it on another, that would be a suitably impressive demonstration of how much bandwidth you system can carry.
Requirements and analysis are definitly non-outsourceable.
On the other hand, software design and development can be outsourced.
This most definitly scares all those out there that are gifted coders and designers (capable of hacking the linux kernel or designing a complex data model) and yet have just about zero ability to understand or make themselfs understood by a customer (the type of people that expects the Head of Marketing to understand a Linux vs Windows joke). Not to mention those that are not even gifted coders or designers.
As the IT market is going, any ability that only requires direct contact with a machine (such as a computer) is something can be gotten cheaper from India while abilities that require direct person to person contact cannot be moved there - techie skills are out, business and people skills are what's left.
US Steel was able to reorganize itself from a state of near bankruptcy to modest profitability due to the steel tariff.
Actually, worldwide steel prices have been going up latelly because of increased demand. I suspect that would've helped US Steel with or without steel tariffs. (interestingly enough, the nation most responsible for increased demand for steel is China)
Another small detail is that because of the steel tariffs, American companies that actually buy steel had to pay bigger steel prices than companies in other countries (like say, anywhere on Europe).
How about knowing how many condoms somenone has bought in a month?
How about figuring out that such someone usually buy condoms thursday late afternoon at a certain place?

Another warts cure: Arc-soldering light (heavy soldering equipment that put's out a bright white blueish light you shouldn't look at)
I actually know someone that cured all the warts in his hands by exposing them close (but not too close) to the radiation emmited by arc-soldering.
My pet theory is that the high intensity UV radiation did it
Actually, people that don't wash their hands after taking a shit and later touch a keyboard might as well pick their asses and touch the keyboard.
Amazingly there are people out there (yes, in IT) that don't follow this basic act of hygiene.

July 10 i believe
If you're an european citizen now's the time to make your vote count.
Check the FFII site for the list of members of parliament that voted for and against the amendement 59, then cast your vote accordingly.
(I just checked that my personal favorites voted for amendement 59. I didn't vote last time around, but this time they've get my vote!!!)
