Some possible equivalent jobs in the IT world (that survive outsourcing and maybe become more important) are "requirements gathering", "software architecture" and "integration".
Although any game company has a monopoly on a specific title, they don't have a monopoly in "things that provide entertainment", or in "software games", or in any "game genre" or even in "this year's greatest games in a specific genre"
Most people will NOT wake up one day and want to buy Diablo II and only Diablo II for whatever price.

I'd like to see someone try to write a virus or worm that affects plain-text-only mail readers like Mutt. That would be a clever hack. I also suspect it'd be damn near impossible to pull off. How badly would you have to screw up something that displays plain text for a vulnerability to appear?
If it loads data into memory and it interprets some of it (mail headers) then it might have a buffer overflow problem.

You are correct (and also quite rude). This however only applies to information obtained when another users intentionaly connects to you machine (for example, using a P2P app).
The issue here is that it was the (downloaded) program that, unknown to the user (and thus without the user's permission), connected to a central machine. Furthermore, the program was developed specifically with that purpose and was being misrepresented (via a misleading name) as something else than what it really was (ie it was a Trojan). Information obtained in that way should not have been divulged, it shouldn't even have been gathered in the first place

I both have a degree (in Electronics Engineering) and have been working in IT for the past 6 years. My experience with formal education has shown me the following:
Formal education teaching and evaluation methods relly upon and reward memorization. If you have a perfect memory or work hard at studying "the books" before a test you'll get great grades. Understanding the subject is often not really needed
Rarelly will imagination, creativity, intuition or other "soft" skills be rewarded. In my specific degree (a techie one), neither were organizational, social or interpersonal skills teached or rewarded.
It's important to have a degree when applying for a job in IT. It's not a requirement, but it visibly provides an advantage. Not having a degree in Computer Sciences doesn't seem to mater
After your first job, almost nobody will look at your school grades. During 6 years and 2 countries, after my first job only once was i asked for my university grades (and other things made me not to want to work there anyway)

Good programmers plan before they write code, especially when there are pointers involved. For example, if you ask them to reverse a linked list, good candidates will always make a little drawing on the side and draw all the pointers and where they go. They have to. It is humanly impossible to write code to reverse a linked list without drawing little boxes with arrows between them. Bad programmers will start writing code right away.

Another small detail is that because of the steel tariffs, American companies that actually buy steel had to pay bigger steel prices than companies in other countries (like say, anywhere on Europe).
